Standing a little more confidently, I level him with my own serious gaze. I hope he sees that I'm trying to save us all—even though doing this might still end up with another mistake.
I don't know if it's right. However, right now, I feel in my heart that this is what I need to do.
"We're ending this," I say.
"It's why we're here, sweetheart. To end it," he answers with a hint of ingenuine patience, his teeth grinding.
"I meant we're ending all of this ridiculous and never-ending cycle of vengeance. We got married because of that, didn't we? It ends with us."
His jaw ticks and he doesn't answer. I turn to face Duke whose wide gape is laced with both fury and confusion as he stares at me. It's the first time we've met, but I've heard about him from Mariano and I don't know what he's heard about me, but I'm guessing he didn't expect a De Luca to jump in front of a gun for him.
