#Chapter 5 Sassy Boy

Dylan POV

The van came to a stop in front of me. Not much traffic had passed through here since this area became my own to monitor. They knew better than to bring drugs or try and traffic girls down this way. Still, many tried and I made sure their vans were never seen again.

One day, I would make sure every road leading to the shifter world was covered so no one slipped through. Every small crack in the border would be covered with a pair of my eyes to make sure of it.

I didn’t care that most people knew the story of why I did everything I could to stop the traffickers. They should know. I wanted them to know and live in fear of what I might do to them if I had ever caught them myself.

It felt good to see the vans try to turn around and drive as fast as they could away from me. I liked chasing them down and ripping off the top of their van. They never expected me to move as fast as I did in my human form—but my blood was stronger than most shifters. I had my fathers blood that ran through my veins and my mothers strength.

My mother was a human that was once trafficked into the shifter world as a young girl. She was tortured and abused for weeks before my father had found her and rescued her from hell. They took her from her bed one night after watching her for weeks and sold her against her will. The damage they did to her still was visible even after I was born.

But she did the best she could to move on from the nightmares they gave her—the scars that lasted her whole lifetime.

My father saved her from that hell. He almost killed the men that were on her and took her away from that place and back to his own safe home. It took her a few weeks, but she finally came around and they fell in love… and then I came.

I only had five short years with my mother before she was murdered in our backyard while my father was out and I was asleep in my room. Sometimes, I still hear her screams when I close my eyes. As young as I was, it stayed in my brain more than any other memory of her. Her smile faded almost every day, I tried to remember the way she picked me up to show me her garden.

My father almost lost his mind when he came home to find her body raped and bloody. Shifters that had bought her all those years ago, finally tracked her down and had their version of revenge for my father taking her away.

He tracked them down in return and my father never came home after that. I grew up in that house alone with butlers and maids. My rage never had an outlet until I was a little older to understand. I spent every day since I lost them promising to get rid of the shifters buying human girls—even if it meant that I started wars. I would bring an end to trafficking, I would make sure those that tried to slip past me were treated as kindly as they would have treated the girls.

The wars that followed my demands seemed to never stop coming. I knew I had to crawl my way to the top and take control of the lands if I ever wanted change to happen. The other shifters in the land didn’t like the idea of an 18 year old dragon shifter trying to take over their land.

The tiger shifters were always the biggest problem. They didn’t like being stepped on or told what to do, but they underestimated me and all I would do.

I took a step towards the idle car and the doors shot open. Two men stepped out of the car and already I could smell their bullshit.

“Dylan! We’ve heard so much about you—“

“What’s in the van.” I said before the short man could start spewing his lies. He had to crane his neck back just to look me in the eye.

“Nothing interesting. We have a load of shifter weapons to cross the border. The tiger territory wanted us to find as many as we could so they could be destroyed and we have quite the load.” He laughed, sweat dripped down his forehead.

“Let me see.”

I could smell a liar from miles away. If this man had known anything about the shifters, he would have known that our world was at war with each other. I wouldn’t let him pass with a load of weapons to be delivered to the tiger shifters. Those weapons were illegal in our world.

Just as the humans liked to use them on all shifters, our enemies used them on us as well. They weren’t allowed to cross the border under any circumstances.

“We weren’t sure if you were going to be out here.” The man said. I knew he was trying to buy time. The van was moving as if someone was walking through the back. The man glanced back and gave another forced laugh. “That’s just one of my men back there—“

“I asked you to open it.” I said again with a little more force. The man visibly swallowed and took a small step back.

“Of course! He’s just trying to make a path for you to walk through—“ The man coughed and wiped his mouth as if he regretted what he said. “How long have you been out here?”

“I’m here most days and when I’m not, I have enough men to be almost as bad as me.” I said with a slight pull at my lips. “There isn’t a time of day where this road isn’t watched or monitored.”

“Right!” The man swallowed and forced a smile as his friend stepped out of the van with a pale face. “That’s—that’s good! It’s good that you protect this road. There’s plenty of horrible people out there. But—hey, we’re kind of in a rush. Do you think we could let you peak and then go on our way? We don’t want to have the tiger shifters on our ass for being late again.”

“The tiger shifters ordered this?” I asked and tried to take a step towards the van, but the man kept moving in front of me. He flinched when I looked down at him and my eyes melted to black. I let my power flow out of me and the man quickly stepped back from me.

“I… uh, yeah—and the lizards.” He cleared his throat. It had been a minute since I had made a man sweat this much.

“I can’t—“

I froze when I heard a light tapping sound. The others must not have heard it, but I swore it was there. A moment passed and a louder bang slammed against the side of the van. Over and over.

The man glanced back at the van with panic written all over his face.

“I didn’t realize guns could make so much noise on their own.” I said.
