บท 28: Chapter Twenty-Eight

She didn't dare look at Cyro as she waited for Vilen's answer. She knew if she looked at Cyro, she would take back what she said. The lump in her throat threatening to choke her, and the pain in her chest threatening to break her. She didn't want to break his heart, but she couldn't stay here. This was no place for a human to be, and she missed her sister and grandparents so much. She needed their support now more than ever, their comfort. How long has it been since she felt their warm embrace, and heard them speak? It was agony as she waited for someone to speak. It seemed they were all holding their breaths, as if to keep time from moving forward.

"I thought we were mates." Cyro's cold voice stabbed her like a hot knife. She wanted to tell him how much she didn't want to hurt him. But that would just make things harder for them both.

"Well, chief Vilen." She raised her chin trying to hide the tears welling up in her eyes.

"Alright, I don't see why not." He gave her a slight smile and nodded his head. "Of course, I would love to meet more humans."

"There are no other humans here." She looked down at the floor as Cyro turned away from her. She never felt such coldness from him before. "I… I was born in the twentieth century."

No one said a word as the sound of papers hit the floor. She knew her secret would have to come out sooner than later. Best it be now before she makes a deal, she can't make good on. She felt his soft paw touch her shoulder and push her out the room. He led her down the hall and outside. It's been so long since she felt the sun on her skin. Its warmth felt so welcoming. When she first came to this tribe, she didn't think she would find herself alone in a garden with Vilen. She closed her eyes and allowed the sun to calm her and wash away her pain. Though it couldn't get rid of all of it, it did help. She instantly looked around to see what kind of plants were there.

Too the left were rows of flowers and trees, to her right was vegetables and herbs. She moved to the flowers first, the roses were beautiful. Reds, pinks, and whites lined the fence. She reached for a red one, but his black paw stopped her. The one quick motion, he used a claw to cut the stem. She watched as he expertly removed the thorns before handing it too her. She loved the smell of roses and love their deep red color the most. Though lately she found herself loving the color yellow more. She inhaled deeply as the sweet, yet bitter, and somewhat soil smelling, scent entered her nose. People always think that flowers are going to have a rich sweet smell, but that's not always the case.

"Why did you bring me out here?" She asked Vilen without looking up from her rose.

"From the look of things, it seemed you needed some fresh air." His voice took on a serious tone that she never heard from him before. He was just full of surprises today.

"What happened to your playboy attitude?" She smiled as she thought back to how her and Cyro first met.

When she first met Cyro, he came off as nervous and distant. Every now and then she'd see him turn cold against others. Only after that night did she see how warmth and caring he was. She got up and began moving toward a tree. The sun was setting, and she rested against the tree. She could sense Cyro's presence there. She didn't know how, but she could still sense it.

"What's a playboy attitude?" His voice wasn't as deep as Cyro's, but it did have a softness too it.

"It's when you can't take anything serious and only focus on getting between a girls' legs." She could hear Cyro's muffled snicker. Hopefully Vilen wouldn't hear it.

Suddenly Vilen began laughing. It startled her really, she had expected him to be offended.

"You never cease to amaze me." He whipped a tear away and sat next to her. "What other secrets do you have, time traveler."

It was a statement more than a question. His eyes stared deep into hers, as if that would somehow reveal all her secrets. Hie eyes were like too deep pools of honey. The sunset only made his fur a deeper richer red. Almost like the color of blood. He too began sizing her up, and not for the first time. She knew Cyro was behind the tree she sat against, but did Vilen know. She quickly looked away back to her rose. The petals were the same color as his fur. She touched one of the petals, wondering if his red fur was just as soft. She felt his paw cup her chin and pull her face towards him. It was just as soft as the rose petal and tickled a bit. She could barely make out Cyro's hiss. When Vilen's ear slightly twitched, and a grin spread on his face, she knew he knew Cyro was there. She could feel her growing anger as she realized this was just a game too him. He never dropped the act; he was just using a different tactic.

She immediately pushed him off and got up. Enough was enough. All these beasts seemed to want to do is claim her and control her. She stopped off, leaving a stunned Vilen and a grinning Cyro behind. She didn't care for such games; they only caused more pain on others. She paused just outside the door and yelled back at both of them.

"I'll do the tests if you can get me home." She turned and met Cyro's gaze. "And I never meant for any of this."

With that she slammed the door behind her and stopped down the hall. How many times was she going to miss meals and sleep because of those beasts? She completely ignored the looks from Sklai and Heili as she pushed past them. She just wanted to go to her room and sit in the quiet darkness. Too many emotions have been occurring since this past week and a half. She suddenly found herself slamming into a solid surface. The force knocked her down on her butt, stunning her. When she looked up, she saw Alzie's cold stern look, and for once she found him refreshing. If there was anything she could count on, it was Alzie's unchanging attitude. He was suddenly the only one who didn't want something from her, nor hurt her. Before she could stop herself, she was hugging Alzie telling him thank you. Then walking straight into her room and closing the door.

She made her way to the bed, tears already spilling from her eyes, and curled up under the blankets. She never paid much attention to it back then, but now that she laid there in the blankets. She could smell the remanence of Cyro's scent. She inhaled deeply, and just laid there. She didn't want to be around Cyro right now, but that didn't mean she couldn't take comfort in his scent. He smelled of trees and dirt, with the hint of a musky smelly. A smell she quite liked and reminded her of the forest he came from. As the room began falling into darkness, she got up and lit a candle. She couldn't stand pitch black darkness. Always needed a little bit of light to help her see and feel safe.
