In some respects, incense not only serves as a means to communicate with gods and buddhas, but also as a force that nurtures them.
Just as one uses grains to call birds, not only do birds come to ordinary people, but the grains they eat allow them to grow and eventually soar across the sky as majestic eagles.
It is the same for gods and buddhas; the more prosperous the incense, the wider the faith, the stronger the divine skills, the higher the status.
In small mountain temples, where incense offerings are sparse, demon immortals fare much worse. Once the incense is cut off, these demon immortals might even be extinguished from the world, never to exist again.
There is a record in the "Demon Control Department Work Manual" that in ancient times, a great dynasty once destroyed temples and extinguished incense offerings from different directions. From then on, all evil spirits were swept away, no demons could become enlightened, and no one could become an immortal.
