"Why did you not fight back? That's totally unlike you. What on earth happened to you?" Charlotte Cooper was completely baffled.

If Charlotte Cooper was merely suspicious before, she was now certain that Evie Clark was definitely hiding something from her.

"Nothing at all! How could I hide anything from you? We're together every day; you would know everything that's happened to me clearly, wouldn't you?" Evie Clark shifted her stance on the sofa, speaking languidly.

"But this is not like you at all. It makes me suspect whether something has really happened to you," Charlotte Cooper replied.

During the ride back, she had mused over many things, but she could not figure out what had happened to Evie Clark that made her act so out of character.

She thought it might be because of Joseph Andrew. Evie Clark had been inexplicably quiet, but she could not figure out why Evie Clark's mood had changed so dramatically.
