บท 12: Chapter 12

Adela rushed into her room, closing the door behind her.

Tears rolled down her cheeks. The pain she felt in her chest was unbearable. She fell face down on her bed, crying loudly. As much as she wanted to convince herself that she hated him, it was impossible. Who can impose himself on his heart and tell it to stop loving him, hate him now!!?

She didn't want to believe that everything that happened a while ago had really happened. She wanted all the power of her soul to wake up and all this to be a bad dream. Or better yet, a terrible nightmare.

Unfortunately for her, everything was real! And it did happen.

Francesca, for her side, still could not believe her eyes. She was still frozen on her legs at the same spot, shocked by the discovery she had just made.

When she got together and thought about it more calmly, she admitted that she was unsure about this. Maybe it was a big misunderstanding. Consequently, she had to make sure. And soon.

So she decided to keep an eye on Adela. Francesca also was in love with Stefan, and she would not allow anyone else to take him from her.

Francesca laughed at the thought of Adela's picture desiring Stefan.

The maid had nothing to fear from this ugly girl.

Who can compare her dark hair, bright green eyes, and juicy lips with Adela's all opposite features? Yes, there was nothing that could fear off!

She was thinking all these things, and her self-confidence was soaring high.

A lot of men had flirted with her in past years. She was confident about her charmer. But she didn't give in to anyone because she wanted and still wants Stefan. It was always him. From the first day, she had seen him.

On the other side, Stefan never showed clear that he wanted the same thing with her, but at the same time, he never pushed her away either, with the result that Francesca's hopes were always burning, ready to flame up.

She was waiting for a nod from Stefan, and she would run straight to his arms.

A single nod has not been received so far to her great sadness.

But that was something she was determined to change. She would not back down until she achieved her goal.

She decided to keep a close watch on Adela's every future move.

When Agnes saw Adela was back in her chamber, she found her crying, and she understood that things were not going well. Agnes approached her and stroked her hair. She spoke to her in a sweet, tender tone.

"Adela, what happened? Why are you crying?"

Adela sucked her nose, lifted her head from her soaked by tears pillow, and looked at Agnes in pain.

"It's all over, that had happened."

"Do you want to tell me exactly what happened? Maybe you got something wrong."

"There is no mistake. Can you bring me something to drink, please? And I will tell you everything." Adela told her and got up.

"Of course. What do you want me to bring you? "

"Warm wine with spices."

"Okay. I'm going immediately to get you some."

"Agnes?"

"Yes?"

"No some. I need more than some. You can have some too if you want."

"Okay, Adela. As you wish." Agnes said and left the room.

After a while, the two girls were sitting facing each other with silver glasses in their hands. Hours passed with the wine and the conversation. It got dark outside.

They lit a few candles to gain some light.

Agnes carefully heard everything that Adela recounted, and Agnes agreed that Adela was right.

Agnes thought about it and didn't dare to tell Adela that perhaps his rejection would be for the best since such matching would never be flourished anyway because of the gap of social classes between Adela and Stefan.

She knew that Adela would react badly to that if she dared to confess it to her. And the result would be to ruin their relationships, and she didn't want that. Adela needed her more than ever.

Although recently, she saw her coming a little closer to her sister. But no one knew her as she did.

At that point, Agnes stated:

"It's time for dinner, your father will have come too. Some food and closeness with your family will be a comfort for you."

"No, I don't feel like to. I have no appetite to eat anything. I also have a headache."

"The headache is because you have been crying. I will bring you tea. The cook has so many herbs. It is impossible not to have something for a headache too. And I will tell your father that you cannot go down for dinner."

"Okay. Thank you Agnes."

"Let me help you put on your nightgown and lie down in your bed."

Adela got up and left herself in the care of little Agnes.

"I will not need Sophie's clothes anymore. Take it back to her at the first opportunity. If you think they need washing, do it secretly."

"Okay. I will arrange it," Agnes ensured her, passing the nightgown over her head and hands. Then she let it go, and it fell, covering her body down until to her ankles.

Agnes pulled out the covers of the bed, and Adela lay down.

"Okay. I will go now. I will be back as soon as possible," Agnes informed her while she was covering her.

"Okay. Go. Don't worry about me".

"Of course I'm worried. I will be back soon," Agnes said and left.

Agnes did as she promised; she returned to Adela with a steaming cup in her hands. She left the tea on the table next to the bed and helped Adela get up. She arranged the pillows and gave her the cup.

"It is lavender. Mistress Nina said that your headache will pass and you will sleep well."

"I hope so. That is what I want. To sleep and don't remember or thinking. What did the father say? "

"I explained to him and he showed understanding."

Adela smiled and took a sip of her tea.

"Do you remember that you will go to your aunt tomorrow?" Agnes changed the subject.

She wanted to make her forget, even for a while.

"Of course. I look forward to it. So is Emily I supposed."

The discussion continued about Aunt Virginia. Adela spoke so lovingly for her.

Sip-by-sip the cup emptied. Agnes took it from Adela's hands and helped her lie down again and went out of the chamber, letting her get some sleep.

It dawned Sunday. When Agnes entered Adela's room, she found her still asleep. She watched her for a while. She seemed so serene and calm. In the end, the lavender worked.

If she could, she would let her sleep more, but she had to wake her up.

It took several gentle jerks until Adela opened her eyes.

"How do you feel?" Agnes asked her.

"Good. I think."

"How about your head? Does it still hurt?"

Adela unconsciously grabbed her head.

"No. Not at all".

"Thank God. I'm sorry to wake you up, but you have to get up."

"Yes, you did well. And don't be sad at all. A visit to Aunt Virginia will lift my spirits. I can feel it." Adela said and smiled at her.
