A great urge to touch him captured her, but she held back.
When the boy quenched his thirst, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and said:
"Thank you very much, but it's time for me to get back at my work. If the masters see me chatting with you for so long, I may have a problem. So, goodbye." And started walking to the stables, but Adela was not ready to get apart from him yet.
"Wait a minute!" she cried out in despair in her voice.
"What is it again?" he told her with discomfort.
"I just wanted to ask you what your name is," Adela answered almost in a whisper.
"It is Stefan," she told her dryly and left in a hurry.
She didn't manage to stop him again. He was already entered into the stable.
Adela stood for a while, looking at the stable, hoping that the boy would return. But he did not. So, she decided to return to the house. She picked up the bucket from the ground and headed for the kitchen. She peeked to see what was happening if anyone was there. She didn't see anyone and continued walking. She left the bucket where she found it after first pouring the water into a small bush nearby and entered the kitchen.
She crossed it with significant silent steps and ran up to her chamber, shutting the door behind her and leaning on it.
Tears were rolling down her cheeks as the whole scene kept playing and playing in her mind. She did not get any response from the boy. He didn't look at her as she looked at him. He did not even ask her what her name was.
And that was, of course, because he doesn't care.
These circled Adela's mind, and she cried even more with tearful sobs. Frustration and grievance weighed heavily on her heart.
She took her clothes off angrily and threw them tangled in a corner. Then she fell face down on the bed and continued her loud crying.
Adela was still crying when Agnes came to see her and immediately went close to her, full of worry. She sat down next to her on the bed and started stroking her hair.
"What happened, Adela? It is supposed to be the happiest girl in the world after meeting that boy," she told her tenderly.
Adela rose abruptly. So abruptly that if Agnes did not turn her head back, they would be banging their heads.
"He is a fool. An insignificant one." Adela shouted and continued to cry.
"Why do you say this? What happened?" Agnes insisted and
Adela decided to tell her everything. In the end, she completed.
"He didn't ask for my name when I did it for his name. What does this mean? Do you know?"
"No. What can it mean? "
"That he is not interested in me, what else? It is so simple".
"He may not have thought it right to ask you." Agnes defended him, also wanting to give her consolation.
"And why not? For him, I was a poor maid, a worker, like he is. He threw his name on my face and left as if he were being chased."
"Was he wrong? You do chase him," Agnes told her and raised her eyebrows as a sign that she was saying this was wanting to tease her and not to hurt her.
Adela laughed softly.
"Am I chasing him?"
"Eh, yes, I am afraid you do that."
Adela chuckled. "Oh, Agnes! Only if you could see him," Adela said dreamily. "He is much more beautiful up close. And he possessed such a strong body. And those hands. Capable of wrapping around your waist and hugging you tight. So magical."
"Oh, Adela. I hope things get better next time."
Adela smiled at her. "Me too. By the way, how is your angle?" Asked her and raised her eyebrows as Agnes did before.
Agnes smiled at her.
"I am not proud of my actions. The cook swallowed that I was hurt. The poor woman was terrified."
"She will be just fine, do not worry about her. She is a tough woman."
"However it is not honest. Anyway, now, for a few days, I have to pretend to be lame. Mrs. Nina told me to go every day to find her in the kitchen to examine my ankle and watch its recovery. To spread it with creams and tie it again with clean cloths".
"Unfortunately, you have to endure this and pretend to be in pain for at least the first few days. It can't be done otherwise ".
"Yes, I know. Ι will do it".
Adela looked at her. Her eyes shone with the tears that were there.
"What is the matter, Adela?" Agnes asked her softly.
Adela put her in her arms.
"Thank you. Thank you for everything. For what you do for me."
"You do not need to thank me. I do it with joy." Agnes answered and kissed her gently on the hair and continued.
"You do not have to worry about me. Just to know, I have a little bit of fun too. All this heartbeat for not catching me. All the playing act. I feel a flame inside me. It's a fantastic feeling.
So, it is time to get up and help you get dressed. Will you stay like this? "
"You are right. I totally forgot it. I have to get dressed".
She got out of bed and left herself in the experienced hands of Agnes.
"Agnes, I will go again," Adela said after a while.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"What if not…."
"I will see what I do then."
Agnes looked Adela in the eyes, and inside them, she could see the sadness and bitterness.
"Okay. One more try. We have nothing to lose, only to win. We will arrange it. Maybe one of the next days when the cook will change the clothes on my angle."
"Oh, you mean it?" Adela asked with joy and a smile up to her ears.
"Yes, of course, and I mean it. Everything that makes you happy makes me happy too.
But we have to be very careful. The other maids should be busy again ".
"You are right. Do you have any idea what could be done? "
"I will think about it, and I will inform you."
"Okay."
"I am just going to see what happens. If the maids need my help somewhere."
"Okay. I will be here in my chamber."
"Yes. Try to get some rest. And send away all the bad thoughts out of your mind."
"I promise to try," Adela answered, and Agnes left her alone.
Late in the afternoon, Agnes went to see her holding a surprise for her.
"Francesca is back with your aunt's answer," she told her, holding the small white envelope.
Adela immediately got up. "Let's see what she says."
Agnes gave it to her, and Adela opened it in a hurry.
Dear cousin Margaret
It would be my great pleasure and delight to accept
you and your daughters in my house.
I have missed you too so that it would be wonderful
for me to see you.
I will be waiting for you the day after tomorrow, Sunday, after going to church.
That means around 10 o'clock in the morning.
I cannot wait to see you.
With infinite love
Your aunt Virginia
"Ah, how nice that she agreed to visit her. Emily will be so happy. I am already going to announce the good news to her and my mother."
She said and ran out of the room.
Finally, a piece of fantastic news came at the right moment to give a little joy on this fateful day.
