He didn't have to physically open the book his mental sense was enough to read through the book in a few seconds

He mearly opened the book for appearance for a few minutes before he placed it back on the crystal shelf

The crystals were edible and new ones were born all the time but that wasn't what made them so special it was a certain ability about them

Once a crystal was eaten it would have a slight affect for a few moments

Slightly magical effects like a breath of fire or a pore cleanser they were amazing but seeing as how the island was in middle standard regard, it was obvious that this was not the greatest thing he would see

These ships worked in a way that brung about the yearly minor trade

But right now that didn't matter after all he wouldn't be apart of it
