Chapter 098
Alex left somewhere after saying that he needed to call some friends. Steve was confused and asked who he was calling but he left before answering.
Unable to do anything, Steve went to find Tony.
He didn't have to look much as there was only one place Tony would be at. Steve knew it as he had lost a lot of people in his old days.
He was experienced in it.
And he did find Tony at the place where Coulson had taken his last breath. The medical team had already taken away Coulson's body but there was still a large blood stain on the wall and Tony kept staring at it.
His thoughts were jumbled among each other and even when he noticed that Steve was looking at him, he didn't speak.
In the end, it was Steve who opened his mouth.
"Was he married?" He asked.
"No." Tony replied in a sad tone. He was trying to hide his emotions but Coulson's death had shook him hard. "There was a cellist, I think."
"I'm sorry. He seemed like a good man."
Steve said, looking down. Tony let out a frown and walked towards him.
"He was an idiot."
"Why? For believing?"
"For taking on Loki alone."
Tony said, thinking in his head that Coulson had died in a meaningless way. He could have easily survived if not for playing the hero.
"He was doing his job." Steve replied, shaking his head to dismiss Tony's words.
"He was out of his league. He should have waited. He should have…"
Tony wasn't able to finish his sentence before he sighed.
"Sometimes there isn't a way out, Tony." Steve tried to put his hand on Tony's shoulders. But he moved away.
"Right, I've heard that before."
"Is this the first time you lost a soldier?"
Steve asked but his words just angered Tony. He turned back and glared at the man his father had talked hours about.
"We are not soldiers!" The tone in his voice rose before dying out. Looking at Steve, he muttered, "I'm not marching to Fury's fife."
"Neither am I,'' Steve replied. "He's got the same blood on his hands that Loki does. But right now, we have to put that behind us and get this done."
He began to talk about moving on with the plans to finish the job to stop Loki but Tony turned his head to look at the bloodstain on the wall.
"Loki needs a power source. If we can put together a list…"
"He made it personal." Tony said, moving his head to look at Steve.
"That's not the point."
"That is the point. That's Loki's point. He hit us all right where we live. Why?"
Tony asked as he felt like everything was finally coming into a place.
Loki was known as the god of mischief. Someone who plays with mind and not strength. Tony felt like his plan was finally coming in front of him.
"To tear us apart." Steve replied.
"Yeah, divide and conquer is great but he knows he has to take us out to win, right? That's what he wants. He wants to beat us, he wants to be seen doing it. He wants an audience."
Realisation dawned upon Steve hearing that.
"Right. I caught his act in Stuttgart."
"Yeah, that was just a preview. This is opening night. And Loki, he's a full-tilt diva, right?" Tony said, thinking of the first time they encountered Loki. He was giving a speech in between a crowd. That was the sort of thing he liked. "He wants flowers, he wants parades. He wants a monument built to the skies with his name plastered…"
Tony stopped his words there as he finally understood where Loki was aiming for and where to find him. There was only one place in the whole world like that.
"Son of a bitch."
Tony swore as he thought of his creation.
'Stark Tower!'

As Tony and Steve finally found out where Loki was aiming for, Fury was looking up at the cards that Coulson had left behind.
There were a lot of thoughts running in his mind as he thought of Coulson. And one of the recruits in Avengers.
Maria who was beside him couldn't help but speak.
"Sir!" She called out.
"Agent Hill."
"Those cards were in Coulson's locker, not in his jacket."
She said, basically asking why he had lied to the Avengers. Fury looked at her before replying.
"They needed the push."
He said, thinking back to the conversation he had a while back.
'They need the push!'
'It's the only way to do it. They won't fight against Loki until it's because of something personal.'
'Please trust me.'
Shaking his head, he attempted to distract himself and at that moment, he saw Tony flying out in the sky in his Iron man armour with a quinjet following behind him.
It was the Avengers!
[We have an unauthorized departure from Bay 6.]
An agent called out on the PA.
"They found him." Fury quickly said, understanding where they were heading to. "Get our communications back up, whatever you have to do. I want eyes on everything."
"Yes, sir."
Maria replied with conviction in her eyes.

"We are not letting Loki get away this time." Steve said and Alex just gave him a nod.
They were on a quinjet that was being piloted by Clint who had finally gotten normal again and Natasha was accompanying him in the cockpit.
Steve and him were sitting in the back.
"So, who did you call?" He asked and Alex just smirked.
"Just some friends. In case things go wrong. We need as much help as we can if we are going to fight an army."
"Do you mean?"
"Yeah, knowing what the cube can do and Thor talking about Loki having an army. There can only be one thing."
Steve looked down as he realised what Alex was hinting at. If something like that happened, New York would be ruined.
"We will stop him before that."
"Let's hope so."
Alex muttered, smiling sheepishly.
