บท 21: Explusio!

*Thud!*

Michael hits the ground hard as he tumbles to a halt, the horse not waiting for him as it gallops off into the distance, as if it'd never been tamed in the first place.

Realising just how bad this looked for him, Michael scrambled to his feet and begins to run towards the forest in the distance, glancing over his shoulder to see who was pursuing him. Fortunately, this coincides with the moment the man, Professor Colbert shoots some kind of fire snake at him from the tip of his staff.

It hits the floor but doesn't lose any momentum at all as it rapidly begins slithering towards him, at speeds that might even rival Michael's recently departed mount. Frantically, Michael points a finger at it and shouts "Ether Shock", causing a thread of orange lightning to strike it...

The snake bursts into flames, but much to Michael's dismay, quickly reforms and begins its pursuit again. Try as he might, there was no way to outrun it, and eventually, it caught up. The snake flings itself at Michael, wrapping around his ankles like a living bola. Michael had been preparing to scream his lungs out as the flames captures him, but even as he falls to the ground, is confused by the lack of burning flesh...

Indeed, the fire snake was only slightly warmer than his body temperature. So, while it did have him captured, it wasn't torturing him as it held him.

Michael does his best to try and escape, but the snake is too tightly wound around his ankles, easily allowing Professor Colbert to reach him. A foot lands near his head, and the professor kneels next to him with a solemn yet firm expression, "I had thought you were better than this when we first met, even if this is all a misunderstanding, I cannot allow you to attack my students further... But you even attacked your own master? Not even the most beast-like familiars would stoop so low." he sighs, "We'll see what fate befalls you soon enough, General Gramont has already been informed of his son's injuries. I'm sure Duke Valliere will also be wanting to punish you for marring his daughter's face." he states before gesturing with his staff and causing Michael to be levitated by the snake holding his ankles.

Blood begins to rush to his head, but the adrenaline still pumping through him gives him enough clarity to try and escape again... Only, Colbert is well aware of his abilities by now, smacking Michael in the temple with the butt of his staff as he sees him start to struggle.

With that, all goes black.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Many things begin quickly happening as soon as the 'Rogue Familiar' was apprehended by Professor Colbert. The first, was the announcement that any human familiar summoned from there on would have to be heavily vetted, to prevent anything like this from happening again.

The fact that Guiche de Gramont had perished in his sleep the night after the duel made everyone aware of how bad things had gotten, and with the culprit still on academy grounds, rumours were unstoppable forming around almost every aspect of Michael and Louise.

Despite the official explanation being that Louise was taken hostage by her familiar as it tried to flee, a large portion of the student body thought that she was in league with him. The bond between a master and their familiar wasn't so easily broken, even if the familiar was an independent person.

Some people had even begun making up stories about Louise' obsession with Guiche, which led her to have him murdered in a jealous fit of envy towards Montmorency. The fact Louise had yet to awaken from her unconsciousness made it difficult to refute, especially since no one was particularly fond of Louise and her tendency to make everyone's lives difficult with her random explosions.

The second thing was, for the first time in history, the academy would be holding someone prisoner within its walls. As the place had always been intended to function as an educational institution, no prison cells had even been installed. This meant that the rogue familiar had to be held in the empty Void tower with the academy faculty taking turns to guard it as they waited for soldiers to be sent from the capital.

Third, was the 'currently' unofficial expulsion of Louise de la Valliere. For her failure to summon a proper 'familiar'. While the academy had been lenient with her, allowing her to keep her human familiar and remain in the school, recent events had forced their hand, causing the academy to proclaim that any disobedient familiars would have to be put down, and any student unable to control their familiar would face expulsion.

There had actually been a few missives from the capital, asking them to delay the expulsion of Louise, but with it already set, she was no longer a student. Unless the Queen herself got involved, or Osmond stepped on many toes to make an exception, Louise' fate was decided.

Unbeknownst to everyone, these events had put a massive amount of stress on a certain thief, who was now unsure whether or not they'd be able to pull off their heist now that soldiers would be becoming a temporary addition to the academy.

While Fouquet could probably stay in her persona for an extended period of time, she had other responsibilities outside of stealing that required her attention... A responsibility handed to her by her father, as the former Archduke of Albion.

Her original intent was to try the heist during the familiar exhibition, but perhaps she needed to expedite her plans. She had a few treasures from her other thefts that, as much as she didn't want to use them, would probably be required...

บท 22: Failed Persuasion Check!

Michael slowly awakens and he grimaces at the pain in his temple and the hard cold stone floor he was lying on. He glances around the room and releases a long sigh... There was no furniture in the room aside from a waste bucket that smelt like it'd already been used.

There was a single barred window, and after taking a peek out of it, he finds that he's been placed at the top of one of the academy's towers like some kind of fairytale princess. The place was almost completely dark, with only the two moon's illuminating the academy grounds.

The only other thing of note was the single, thick oak door that had an eye-level panel that slid to the side, presumably to deliver food and inspect the 'prisoner'.

Yeah, things weren't looking too good, and his chance of escape was slim to none, even with Ether Shock, he doubted he'd be able to make a dent in the bars in the window, or the wood of the door.

He sits against the wall as his stomach grumbles its complaints, he'd missed almost three days worth of food now, and he was definitely feeling it. He stands and walks to the door, knocking on it a couple times, "Hello!? I'm starving in here! You wouldn't let me die before my punishment, right?!" he shouts, causing footsteps to begin walking down the hallway towards his cell.

Upon seeing the face, Michael almost cheers at his good luck... The unmistakable green hair and stern eyes made it obvious that Fouquet was in charge of guarding him, and with his knowledge of her, it wouldn't be hard to gain her assistance.

However, before he's even able to speak, a wood tray with dry bread and half a rotten-looking apple is roughly pushed through the panel. It hits him in the face as he's' too late to respond, earning him a small bruise on the bridge of his nose as the woman behind the door smirks in response. "Is that all? Or do you wish for more?"

Michael scowls, straightening his back and locking eyes with the woman, "I wouldn't take that tone with me, Fouquet the Crumbling Dirt."

...

Fouquet's eyes sharpen as she glances around to see if anyone was around to hear him, "You must be mistaken, isn't that thief supposed to be a man?"

Michael snorts, "I don't know, you look pretty feminine to me-Guhk!*" he groans as a fist strikes him in the nose, causing him to fall backwards... He quickly gets back up again after blinking the tears away, "Look! You know as well as I do that if I start talking then you're fucked. I know about your planned heist, and I know that you want the Staff of Destruction. So listen up or else!"

...

Fouquet squints in consternation at his claims, as no one else should even be aware that she was planning a heist, and definitely not that she was targeting the Staff of Destruction... Was this boy able to read her mind? "What do you want?" she grouses, wondering if it'd be safer to just kill him now and claim it as suicide.

"You will help me escape. Or I'll tell everyone that'll hear it, your secrets."

...

Fouquet frowns and looks contemplative, tapping her foot as if thinking hard about something. After a couple moments, she smiles and draws her wand, "I wonder, how capable is your wandless magic, familiar?" she asks as she chants a spell Michael hadn't ever heard before.

He tries to dodge to the side fearing an attack, but doesn't expect a thread of words to slide through the panel and wrap themselves around his calf. It doesn't burn or anything, but an itchy sensation occurs as the words tattoo themselves into his leg... He quickly stands and marches over to the door with an angry look once he realises it isn't dangerous though, "What did you do to me?"

Fouquet shrugs, "Let's see you spill my secrets now, familiar." she chuckles, "Oh, it looks like my time is now up... I look forward to your execution." she says as she walks away, Michael's heart leaping out of his chest as he calls after her... Unfortunately, he is unable actually refer to her as her criminal name... It seems that whatever spell she'd cast was preventing him from spilling her secrets...

"Damn! Maybe threatening her probably wasn't the best way to go about it, but how else would I get her help!? It isn't like she'd do it out of the good of her heart!" he mutters, punching the wall and receiving a sore hand for his troubles.

The next teacher who arrives to guard his door is a plump-looking woman who ignores any of his attempts to actually converse with her. Making Michael sure that he wasn't getting out of this situation with his head still attached.

He sits down in the corner of the room where he couldn't be seen from the door and summons the 'Book of Commoners', flipping it open to see if there were any solutions.

[Curse of Silence - (Origin: Matilda)] : Prevents user from speaking, scribing, or making any attempts to reveal restricted information.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fortunately, other than the new curse adorning his status, it looked as if he might have a way out... His duel with Guiche must've provided enough experience to level up his Shadow Shaman spirit. Though, he wasn't sure if any of its abilities would actually help him in this situation...

Spirit : Shadow Shaman

Level : 1+

Abilities :

Carnival Tricks (Rank 0) : Allows user to form ephemeral shapes, creatures, and patterns to amuse, distract, or frighten.

Ether Shock (Rank 1) : Casts a cone of ethereal energy that strikes multiple enemies.

Hex (Rank 0) : Temporarily transforms the target into a harmless chicken.

Shackle (Rank 0) : Magically binds an enemy in ethereal threads while also dealing damage throughout the duration

Serpent Wards (Rank 0) : Summons multiple Serpent Wards to attack any nearby enemies.

...

Yeah, there wasn't really an ability that'd directly help here. Nothing to burn the door, melt or bend the bars... Or even teleport him out of his cell... He might be able to distract his guards with Carnival Tricks, but that would be a single chance option, with a high possibility of not working.

Though... He did get an idea after glaring at the options for a few minutes. One that might just save his ass this one time. It was a long shot, but it might actually work... He levels up Hex and prays that whatever god was watching wouldn't screw him now.
