บท 14: Chapter 14

The gem cutter was like a combination of the engraver and forge, he was able to move the gem like putty until he was ready to start actually cutting it. Made a simple orb as doing anything too complicated. Started cutting and saw its curved shape. He used the saw he had to cut around the edges, and used a small brush to add the parts he had cut back off on. This only worked because they started as one gem, meaning he couldn't combine two into one. Not without more advanced techniques at least. He looked at the spherical gem with wonder as the tools required for work like this were very expensive and hard to find. He didn't think he would see such a well cut jewel until he was at least level 20.

[5 Jeweler EXP gained]

He did the same thing to the matching fire gem, hoping to pick up some metal the next day for his first piece with two gems, a large milestone for any craftsman. He also thought about selling them, but he needed the power a lot more than he needed the money so it wasn't worth it.

[5 Jeweler EXP gained]

He could probably make a whole business around cutting gems, but the problem was that it didn't give them any buffs to cut them without a technique, so people would only do it to make them look better and not many people would do it just for that. If he could find a good gem cutting or refining technique he could get quite a few customers, even if it wasn't all that profitable. The best move for him was to get better materials and skill then sell full crafts. Not only for money but also EXP. Eventually creating custom orders for people who paid enough. Jake knew that that was still a long way away, but the thought of it let him peacefully drift to sleep.

Another rude awakening hit Jake in the head like a wooden sword. This awakening was of course Wai, hitting him in the head with a wooden sword.

"Youngling, if you don't get a job soon I will have to beat you daily. Now I set you up to interview for work at the smithy, let your talent for jewelry shine."

Jake was still groggy but it wasn't bad enough to prevent him from getting up.

"Yes Wai." He said in his daze.

"This is one of the lower smithys, only really used to inspect shipments as well as craft regular weapons. So it's below average pay, but anything is better than nothing."

He wasn't too disappointed, he would have access to metal and probably wouldn't be required to become a blacksmith. He arrived to see a small shop about fifty feet in diameter and ten feet tall, with a second story that added another six. The inside of the shop was half forge, and half shop. He couldn't see much of the forge, but the shop was filled with weapons of all kinds, most of them only a few copper each. A large man that stood around six feet tall was sleeping at the main desk for the shop.

"E-em"

Wai woke him up with a palm slammed on the table. He had the stench of coal on his clothes and looked as if he had not changed in a week.

"This is the young one starting today, take care of him. He is good at appraising jewelry so let him check it when shipments come in. Other than that just throw him on shoveling or running the shop till he is stronger, he has quite the debt to pay off. And you, respect Shen. Even if he doesn't look like much now, at night he becomes quite a good smith."

"Mhm, just look at the stuff in the back for now."

Shen mumbled, pushing his shoulder to point towards the back. Wai had left and Jake was alone in the back. It had a classic looking forge and set of tools, but compared to his personal setup it was very primitive. It had a few bars of metal and broken down items waiting to be repaired, as well as a few boxes to check through before sending them to other sects or vice versa. The boxes were all full of the sect's primary re-forging sword, except one that had only throwing axes. This entire place had no armor, which seemed to be a common theme in this world. They wanted the mobility that robes provided and didn't want to be weighed down by clucky metal if they could help it. He looked over what needed to be repaired. The only jewelry there was a hairpiece shaped like a butterfly that had one of its wings snapped off. It had the broken wing next to it, so it would be easy enough to reattach it, but getting the ki in it to circulate again would be a little harder.

[Butterfly's Grace][Lowest Uncommon Grade][Broken]

Active Skill [Graceful Landing]

Dexterity +30

[Graceful Landing]

When used, the user will decrease gravity on them by 90% for .25 seconds. (Must touch solid ground to refresh.)

(Only gives +5 dexterity and no skill due to broken status.)

He placed both parts in his inventory and entered his training dimension. He fired up the forge and used it to see the ki flow of it. The ki and/or magic flow was a lot like veins in animals, he didn't have to worry about it in his own crafts as they were mono gemmed and didn't have to cycle in a complicated way. They just flowed around the whole thing and it was done, simple as that. This one was much more difficult. The moment it passed into uncommon it had to be many times more complicated. He was able to line up the flow, but without the proper materials he couldn't actually repair it. He came out of his training dimension and put the butterfly where he found it. He didn't want to seem suspicious. He went around and checked out all the different raw materials they had scattered around. Unlike the shop it was extremely disorganized and he would sometimes almost trip on entire bars of metal.
