Paloma’s brother came searching for her, a huge scowl on his face. “Syeira has sent for you.”

“What…did she say what she wanted of me?”

“D’you think she tells me anything? All I know is she wants you there now.”

Paloma knew better than to get into an argument with him. She returned his scowl, stepped around him with a flip of her skirts, and strode haughtily to Syeira’s caravan, but inside she was eaten up with nerves. Paloma knew her way about herbs and medicinal plants, but the wise woman was skilled in foretelling the future.
