I ignored that. “—to die in an accident?”
“The entire district is aware there was no love lost between you. And with your brother Harry gone, as well, that would make you Sir John’s heir.”
“Are you insane?”
He glowered at me. “You were never considered our prime suspect.”
It hadn’t sounded like that to me. Had he said that just to wind me up? “And as I told you, John didn’t drink.”
“When was the last time you saw him?”
“Ten or so years ago.”
“People can change in that time.” He straightened and met my glare. “The incident was written up as an unfortunate accident, which—I might add—your father accepts. And that’s all there is to it.”
He turned and hurried off, and I was left there staring after him, grinding my teeth in frustration.
