“Hello, boy,” Barry said, giving the horse a hug around his neck.
As usual, Shadow used his head to pull Barry in even closer.
Breathing in the horse’s familiar scent, Barry stifled a sob. “What am I gonna do? I love you, I love Rex. I love this ranch and the hands and Jake and Jimmy. But…” He stopped trying to hold back his tears.
Barry didn’t think he could live up to the promise he’d made himself of getting on a plane and looking back fondly on his time in Colorado.
“Maybe I could have taken Rex back to Britain with me when it was just him,” Barry said into Shadow’s neck. “But now there’s you as well. I can’t see you liking being put in a giant crate and flown several thousand miles to a strange country. That’s even if Jake and Jimmy would sell you to me.”
