บท 87: Chapter 87 - The Ivory Nightmare

The four groups that had left the safety of the camp, quickly began their search, using torches and minor spells to make balls of light which they sent into the darkness. They had a variety of weapons, from simple swords to spears, to a few chains whips, and odd-looking crescent axes.

They searched and searched, but after half an hour of nothing, many started to grow lazy and bored, wanting to get back to camp and restart the fun, but they knew Sam would be pissed if they came back so soon, so they continued on, getting further and further away from the camp.

everything seemed fine, and by the end of the first hour, they were ready to return, but they never did.

The group that had traveled the furthest out was the first to go. They had become lazy and unvigilant, not paying attention to their surroundings, and instead were drinking from bottles they'd taken with them or sneaking off from their groups to have some fun.

The first pair didn't even get a chance to scream as they were torn apart.

One by one, the group was killed. With two already dead, and the lack of watchful eyes, Rex had no trouble in getting close and by the time they noticed him, it was too late. The last of the group only managed to get out a half scream before he was gobbled up and devoured, the crunching sounds of bone the only thing left.

Blood and viscera scattered the area, and Rex let out a pleased growl at the sight. He always enjoyed this, hunting, and killing, and the fact it made his alpha pleased made it all the better. Just as he was about to leave he spotted a shape in the sky and stopped. The shape grew closer until one of the large silver hawks stopped in front of it and atop it was the rider who had been spotting and finding groups for him, and making sure that they were actually bad. Rex didn't much care for it but knew they were working for his alpha and the idea of disobeying never crossed his mind.

"They were wrong, your more deadly than they said," The rider said. "Finish up with this group, and that's it for today. I've found some more, but that can wait for tomorrow. Good work."

The silverhawk flapped off, and Rex resumed his hunt. It took him only fifteen minutes to kill the rest of the groups. By that point, they had stopped believing there was anything out there, and their level of intoxication made it easy for the beast to take care of them.

Red made sure to east his fill of them as he made his way back to the camp. This would be a bit more complicated since there was a higher chance he could be spotted, but he wasn't worried, since he doubted their little claws would do much to him.

-----

Sam yawned as put his clothes back on, glancing at the brunette who was happily sleeping next to the fire. He had to admit, she wasn't half bad, he'd certainly enjoyed himself.

"Boss, shouldn't they be back by now?" One of the people who'd stayed behind asked.

Sam formed and looked around. It had been a little over an hour and a half by his estimate, but he didn't hear any sounds from the forest, which either meant they were too far or had been killed. He snorted at the last thought. They were too many of them and they all had minor abilities in kor or mana. Whatever this beast was, he wasn't worried about it.

He walked over to his tent, intent on getting some rest. He'd had his fun for the day and he knew there would be more caravans and supplies to rob tomorrow. The thought made him smile and just a she was about to reach the tent, he heard a scream.

He whipped his head around just in time to see one of his men who had been close to the tree, get snatched up by a pair of large jaws. The loud crunch that followed sent a shiver down his spine, and he quickly drew the blade on his hip.

"What the fuck! Formations!"

His soldiers quickly grabbed their weapons from their hips or from places around the camp, getting into a crude circular formation, making sure all sides were visible.

Sam glanced around at the center of the circle. What the hell had that been? Was it the beast James had talked about? What about his soldier? How had it gotten past them? Unless it had...

Sam shook his head. There was no way it had killed all of them, he or someone else would have heard screams or some sound at least.

"Boss, what do we do?" Someone said in a shaky voice.

"Stay calm and watch the forest," Sam replied making his voice sound more confident than he felt. "It can't surprise us if we see it coming."

There was a sudden crack from his right, and before he could say anything everyone turned to it, moving their gaze from where they should have been watching.

"You fools don't get distracted!"

Another scream sounded and Sam cursed as he turned to see a large shape disappearing into the forest. He looked at his group and saw that three had been taken while another had been torn apart, bisected from head to toe. He'd started off with twelve but now there were only six left, minus James who-

A sudden scream broke the silence of the night and he turned to see James standing outside the tent he'd been sleeping in.

"It's come back for me!"

Sam was still staring at the man when a large object flew out of the forest and at the man. Sam didn't have time o shout or warn his friend before James' head was split open by a large rock.

"Gods damn it!" He screamed out.

Another scream sounded and he turned to its direction to see that another three had gone, two torn apart, while another had been taken.

"Come on then you fucking monster!" He shouted in fury. "You damn coward, Show yourself!"

A crunch sounded from behind him and he turned. He finally saw it, as it crunched up the last of his soldiers. His weapon dropped out of his slack hands as he stared up at the monster, the nightmare in front of him. Now he understand why James had been so scared.

The last thing Samwell Dains saw was the inside of the monster's mouth and the last thing he heard was a loud crunch before everything went black.

Rex swallowed his prey and let out a please growl as he stared at the devastation and death he'd caused.

He licked the blood from his many teeth and maw as he turned and headed off to find somewhere to rest for the night.

After all, he had more prey to hunt tomorrow.
