Chapter 35 Runic Trance part 2

(Zoren's P.O.V)

'Magical Trance. A state of enlightenment achieved not by the most talented, the strongest or the smartest. It's achieved when one's whole being resonates with a particular magic. Whether through luck, fate or divine intervention by a god of magic, a magical Trance is incredibly beneficial to a practitioner of magic. It doesn't add power to a being's overall strength. It simply gives one a connection to the magic branch of their choice. A connection that enables mages to cast that magic without a need for mediums such as wands or other magical artifacts.

There were multiple types of magical trances. Psionic trance, where a committed enough mage can take it to unbelievable heights. The mage would become a focal point for all psionic magic happening within his range. In other words, any lower psionic mage's powers would be weakened greatly. Powerful psionic mage's could deconstruct or construct an object through their will alone. A psionic trance had it's unfortunate side of disrupting any other magic besides Psionic that the user tried to use.

Elemental trance, gave a sorcerer the chance to master one element and it's subtypes to a ridiculous degree. All fire generated in their range would be theirs to command. The same applied to all the other elements. An elemental trance gave one a connection to only one element including it's subtypes but severely weakened the user's connection to the other elements. The restriction to other branches of magic was there but not as pronounced as that of a psionic trance.

An alchemical trance ensured that someone's talent in alchemy shot through the roof. It didn't seem to have any adverse effects to the user except for a scary obsession with figuring out the way to brew the Universal Elixer otherwise known as the philosopher's stone. Magic was… unpredictable that way. Alchemists who entered an Alchemical trance could come up with wondrous potions and terrifying poisons with unmatched efficiency. Their minds were wired differently and all other mages feared them.

Nature magic trance has never been witnessed due to mother Gaea's hate of humans. She is more than a god. She's the embodiment of all natural things and she had yet to grant a blessing to any sorcerer. A primordial such as her would utterly despise the thought of a lower being fashioned after the image of those abominable gods connect to her domain willy nilly.

A spirit magic trance is overwhelmingly profound. By connecting to this mysterious branch of magic a practitioner can fully astralize themselves whenever they need by turning their physical bodies into spiritual ones at will and whenever. Without the interruptions from the biological needs of a body, they're better able to meditate and attain higher spiritual enlightenment and control of their souls granting them a pseudo immortality. Pseudo because if a sorcerer loses his physical body without connecting deeper with spiritual magic their body dies and the soul without an anchor deteriorates quickly after.

A runic trance is special. Runes are the cheat codes of the universe and normally a sorcerer could only learn a few runic disciplines from different civilizations. There were Greek runes, which while strong were easily dismantled or wrecked, Antlantean runes which were descended from Greek runes but more durable through the use of effective inscribing material and the invention of runic formations though they could only be used by Atlanteans. Egyptian runes which continuously invoked the names of the Egyptian gods to stabilize the runes and grant them more power. Norse runes were incredibly hard to construct and fickle. Fickle as Norse runic magic was under the domain of Odin who could take away the ability to use them at any time. Chinese runes needed a specially crafted paper blessed by a spiritual monk and African runes were only used by shamans who underwent stringent conditioning that took them years to enable them to use runes.

A runic trance brought with it an unmatchable boon. The ability to take meaning from the unrefined and undefined source of all runic magic. A theorised nexus realm that contains the first rune. All the other runes are descended from this place. The perfect example being Odin who had undergone a runic trance as well and hence created the Norse magic runes after connecting to the rune source. The sorcerer who entered a runic trance would be a force to be reckoned with. A maelstrom of unstoppable force. It wouldn't matter if a powerful being dominated the area by his magical might alone, a sorcerer who had entered a runic trance could still push through because he would have the hacking code to the universe at his beck and call.'

These thoughts went through Zoren's mind quickly as befitting of his knowledge. He still couldn't understand just how Jin had managed to achieve such a thing. For starters he was completely blocked off from having his own magical reserves. He had a talent for atlantean runes yes, but that was based on the fact that he could sense them. Most likely because of his heritage as a demigod of the sea. The mystic side of magic was scary that way. A select group of people using a certain type of magic for thousands of years and that magic would be easier for their descendants through resonance, so it was understandable why.

It was inconceivable that Jin would fall upon such an advantage before his journey to mage-hood even begun. 'Seems like the boy is special' Zoren thought while casting detection charms along Jin's body. The smile on Zoren's face froze instantly. A hum of supercharged energy exploded out and blue magic circles erupted around both of them, blocking the multiple armaments aimed at their vitals.

"I knew you were powerful for a soul echo but wow."

There was no indication to herald her arrival. One minute there was nothing, the next a breeze was blowing upon her martial skirt. A woman in shiny black armor and a red skirt appeared smiling arrogantly. A scar run across her  face and her eyes were a stormy gray.

Zoren's face retained that same impassivity Jin knew him for.

"Who are you?"

"Hahahaha."

A deranged laugh escaped the newcomer's mouth.

"Feast your eyes upon me and know fear. For before you stands a martial expert. The Champion of Ares."

Zoren's nonexistent heart skipped at the last part. A Champion was nothing but trouble. He was going to have to get serious.

(Jin's P.O.V)

How long have I been here for? Seconds? Centuries? Days? Decades maybe? My perception was screwed up. I finally found out why I had at first woken up in a room. It was my mind's way of making sense of this jumbled mess of a space. I had reflected on everything that had happened and come to conclusions. I couldn't take back any of the actions I had done. But that didn't mean I couldn't learn from them. For instance, my own pride and arrogance needed to be curbed. If I hadn't wasted time in putting Blackout down maybe Bette would still be alive.

I also shouldn't have stuck around Star Labs for as much as I had done. I had been trying to outthink a master manipulator when I should have been hiding and amassing power quietly. Unfortunately, I wasn't the type to do that. There was also the thing with Iris. Yeah, I don't regret that at all. I do regret the way we ended things but I'm also glad that we did. At that time I had been under so much pressure that I had unknowingly let my guard down for a bit. With nothing but time to think, I slowly eased myself into a state of total, let go. I closed my eyes while among the flowing streams of gold and meditated.

In that state my worries were washed away leaving me with a clarity I had never felt before. I felt a steady rhythm building up from the streams of light going around me. With nothing else to do I slowly synced my whole being to it. I drifted on one stream and ended up on the other with no movement from my side. The tempo of the rhythm picked up as the streams around me built up speed. They got so fast that they formed a sheet of golden color around me.

In that sheet of color, a white streak appeared next to a black one. They started intertwining and twisting upon and around each other in a fight for dominance. Nothing else registered on my mind. My eyes were glued to that particular scene. A scene that told a story. A story that asked the question, 'which one of us will you choose? The path of immense power or the path of immense control?

I opened my mouth to answer. A wordless statement escaped my mouth.

"Neither. Power without control is useless and control without power is limited. I choose both."

Everything stopped.

My mind opened as something substantial yet ethereal settled upon my soul with a weight that was heavier than all the sins on earth and lighter than air escaping a dying person. A symbol I couldn't quite make out was forever etched on my mind's eye. I could only feel the start of the colorless font. The edge of it gleamed in a dark space. Devoid of light in itself yet so deeply imprinted, I knew that it would shine with a light greater than the sun some day.

"I don't think that this is how any of this was supposed to happen."

I said to myself as an afterthought.
