บท 19: Xiao Kanque
White, Nea, and Ruan Yanxi were kicked out of the room while Han Bindge and Brianna talked. A perky disciple greeted them with a beaming smile. "Nice to meet you! My name is Xiao Kanque. I heard that you guys will stay here for a while. Come with me I'll take you to your lodgings." The disciple kept on prattling as he guided them down. He pointed at a spacious area where some disciples milled around. "Here's why we usually take our morning exercise." They passed a large building where the delicious smell beckoned them to come in. "Oh, there's our cafeteria. We have different menus every day. However, the fancy food can only be bought using activity points." He pointed at a large pagoda with several floors. "That's our peak's library. You can borrow books there but some books can only be read in the library." Finally, they stopped at a row of buildings near the base of the peak. "Here are the dormitories. The female dormitories are over there on the west side. This is the male dormitories."
"You split between genders?" Nea asked. "Why?"
"Why?" Xiao Kanque tilted his head. "That has been the rule since long ago."
"Different cultures have their own different rules," White said. "Your clan does not differentiate between male and female much but in Da Yue, there is a separation between genders."
"Weird." Nea scratched her head.
"Here's the key to your room." Xiao Kanque said, handing it to White. It didn't look like a key at all and more like a long rectangle with runes written on it. "You two are given the same room. I hope you guys don't mind."
"It's alright." White smiled. "I need to keep an eye on my fella here. Hey if you ever see him wander around don't hesitate to bring him back to me. He has a bad memory."
"Will do." Xiao Kanque then left to take Nea to her room.
Each dormitory was quite large. It hosted at least 20 rooms. White and Ruan Yanxi were given a room near the entrance on the first floor. Inside the room were two beds, one large low table and two seatings, an empty shelf, and even a decently sized wardrobe. Since they didn't bring any possession, White and Ruan Yanxi took their respective bed. White laid down languidly while Ruan Yanxi sat with a straight back.
"I cannot stay here," Ruan Yanxi said.
"You cannot leave either," White replied. "I'm the one who keeps you from collapsing back to a coma."
"I still need to go."
"How pushy. Cooldown your head. Whatever Seir is planning it won't happen overnight."
"I don't trust you."
White put his palm on his chest. "Is that how you should talk to your savior?"
"You smell strange."
White gasped dramatically. "Rude! I may not have taken a bath since forever but it's still not a polite thing to point out."
"You smell like nothing. When one wanders, nature will leave its mark but you have none. As if you do not belong in this world."
"Hoo." White arched his eyebrow. "You don't know who-what I am yet." White grinned. "I'll let you in on the secret if you say please."
"Not interested." Ruan Yanxi turned his head away, crossing his arms.
White sat up. "Eeh! Are you sure? This is a super-secret that not many know."
Ruan Yanxi kept silent.
"Now you're just being childish. Boring~" White huffed. "Fine, I'll tell you. Since you are an amnesiac, you may not remember about it. But I am what cultivators called the divine artifact. Saint Yulan is believed to be the one who made me. Are you impressed? You should be grateful that I used my divine power to save you in your time of need."
Ruan Yanxi said, "I didn't ask."
"Mean!" White pouted. "Just be that way. Next time you need help I won't lend you a hand." White threw himself back to the bed and turned to face the wall.
Ruan Yanxi looked at the sulking 'young man'. A familiar yet unknown voice nagged him in his mind, rebuking his attitude. It was not that White made him felt unease. If anything else there was something that made him felt the attraction between them. Not to mention, White had aided him. Ruan Yanxi sighed and gave in to the voice's order. "That was improper of me, I'm sorry."
White didn't respond for several seconds. "Say it again."
Ruan Yanxi felt his eye twitched. "No."
White whirled around. "That just shows you're not sincere."
"You're being childish."
"Which one of us was being childish first?" White pointed his finger at him.
Ruan Yanxi said, "You."
White returned to sulking. "Apology not accepted."
Nea soon visited their room. However, Xiao Kanque held her from going inside. "It is not appropriate!"
"What's wrong with visiting my friends' room? I did this all the time on the island."
"Well, that's the rule here. Male disciples are not allowed to enter female dormitories, and female disciples are not advised to enter male dormitories."
"It is only advised, so I can come in. It's not as if anything illegal will happen."
"I can't let you." Xiao Kanque looked ready to cry as he held Nea's sleeves tightly.
White laughed as he walked outside, enjoying the struggle between Nea and Xiao Kanque. Ruan Yanxi followed behind him.
White patted Nea's head. "Calm down, kid. You said you want to be a scout we a scout should blend well with the local customs and don't bring needless attention."
"I said don't touch my head!" Nea shook off White's hand but stopped her struggle. She glared at the curious onlookers.
Xiao Kanque released his hold and breathed out. "Thank you for your assistance. Perhaps, I should ask a female disciple to aid Nea in her stay here."
"What is it now inappropriate for you to talk to me?" Nea asked.
Xiao Kanque hurriedly responded, "Ah no but a female disciple can help you adjust better than me."
"Thanks for the offer but no. I would rather stick with my two friends. Come to think of it what are we going to do here?"
"Ah, the sect leader has informed me that you are allowed to take classes with the disciples. My dad can help you with picking the classes."
"Your father?" Nea asked.
"My father is one of the elders here. He takes care of the administrative aspect of the sect. Follow me I'll bring you to him."
