บท 3: The First kill
I didn't go home that night and instead digested what I saw while training with my favourite weapon, the sword! Apparently Spitelout was worried since I'm technically his adopted son, when he heard I was training though he couldn't be more pleased saying me and Snotlout will bring honor to the family name.
Later in day the competition for the right to kill was at its finale with Astrid and Hiccup fighting a Gronkle, the result ended in Hiccup winning and the others rushing to lift him up I the air. I walked by him giving him a pat and my congrats as I walk to Astrid and placed and hand on her shoulder "Don't worry eh, we'll find a dragon to kill in the next raid"
Astrid decided to tail Hiccup after he left to see what was going on little did she know while she tailed him I tailed her. I knew he had a dragon I'd never seen before so I brought my sword and shield ready to help if things went south. Eventually they stopped in a small cove I could see the dragon and Astrid and Hiccup were about to as well I drew my sword and moved closer behind some rocks, staying hidden. Astrid saw it soon after and tackled Hiccup down causing the dragon to rush them, that was my cue I stepped in front and raised my shield. The weight of the beast slammed into it knocking me back a distance, I kept standing but you could see lines where my feet pushed through the dirt. The dragon went to hit me again but Hiccup tackled me and threw my sword away before raising his arms at the dragon.
Hiccup - "Its okay, its okay, they're both friends" he said calming it down
I quickly look for my sword so I could grab it if needed while the two talked about something. Astrid eventually ran off presumably to tell someone, so that left me eyeing Hiccup and his pet with only my shield in hand. I thought about how to by time for her to get the village but distracted by my thoughts I failed to notice the dragon fly off. Fearing the worst I ran for the village hoping to see Astrid along the way as I ran i heard yelling up above. I could see the dragon on a tall tree with Astrid dangling from a branch. "oh for thors sake" it came out instinctively because of what I saw next. The dragon had jumped from the tree and took flight, it was flying right at me I tried to run to a nearby rock for cover but it was futile. I feel something grab my shoulders and I close my eyes ready to welcome the gods.
"Eivor!" I open my eyes and see Astrid much clearer than before and getting closer. I could hear the flap of wings above me and feel the wind as I dangled through the air. Eventually I dropped and the branch next to Astrids before Hiccup spoke
Hiccup - "Guys you have to give me a chance to explain." he pleaded to us
"When I get down Hiccup I'm gonna wring your neck!"
Astrid - "I am not listening to anything you have to say!"
Hiccup - "Then I wont speak just let me show you" he says stretching a hand out for her.
She slowly climbs up before they both look in my direction. If they think I'm getting on a dragon they're nuts. I send a scathing glare at both of them. Although in my past life there was no precident for this in this life I was raised to kill dragons from birth for 15 long years. I know what kind of monster that creature is and I'll have no part of it.
Hiccup - "Eivor just trust me this once, please."
He spends the better part of 10 minutes trying to persuade me before him and Astrid nod and fly off. I release a breath I didn't know I was holding before thinking of how to get down, that was until I hear wing beats behind me and realised they went in a small circle. "Hiccup i swear to Thor if y.." I never finish the sentence as I'm grabbed by the shoulder and dragon off. The flight started with a quick ascent that sent my hair back before a drop into the water followed but me being dunked into the water multiple times we fly up before dropping into a barrel role all the while I'm cursing like a sailor. Apparently the dragon calmed down however as we start flying level towards the setting sun, I'm not gonna lie it was pleasant.
As we fly up into the clouds it really gets interesting "Woah! hahaha this is awesome!" I couldn't help it the view was incredible.
Astrid looks down off the side and sees me "Eivor!" she reaches down and when she grabs me the dragon let's go so she pulls me up onto the tiny section available between her and the wings of 'Toothless'
Hiccup looks back at me sending me a bit of a glare? I return it with a raised eyebrow. Before I'm interrupted by Astrid grabbing my hand and shoving it into the cloud apparently she was trying to get my attention before. It's a weird feeling I can tell its wet even with being entirely soaked from earlier. I'm drying off rather quickly anyway. Plus astrid leaning her back on me is helping its warm. We slowly come into an opening with a beautiful night sky with the starts and something akin to Aurora borealis shining nearby. I feel Astrid slump into me fully, the added weight was a surprise but I quickly use my legs to tighten my hold.
"Well Hiccup I'll admit this was great and all but what will you do about tomorrow?" I ask the seemingly annoyed boy
Astrid - "Hes right Hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow. You know you'll have to kill a dragon"
Were interrupted when Toothless steers of course and flies into a horde of dragons. I reach into my boot and pull a knife the only weapon I got since Hiccup discarded my sword. We dodge through rocky pillars jutting out of the raging tide beneath us as I keep watch for any dragon attempting to snatch us.
Eventually we dive down into a cave, I can feel the sweltering heat coming from below. Force up from the earth by magma. Were in the dragon nest surrounded by dragons who'd kill us given the chance, luckily toothless picks a secluded rock to sit behind as we watch them dump food into the pit of lava. A lone Gronkle flies to the center before dropping a single fish into the molten lake below. It starts to fly away but before it can make any ground I toothed maw the size of a long ship opens wide and swallows the unfortunate creature.
I hear Astrid question next to me "What is that?" she says in a hushed quiet voice.
Hiccup goes silent before telling Toothless to fly narrowly avoiding the bite the massive dragon sent our way. The dragons all swarm away from the hungry monster as we leave but even being surrounded by dragons my attention was solely on the one in the center, I knew this wouldn't be the last time we would see it.
We eventually landed on Berk again, truthfully I wished to fly more but we clearly had things to discuss. Astrid spoke first saying we go tell Stoic but Hiccup wasn't to inclined to agree so I was the deciding vote I suppose.
"Well Hiccup you call the shots it's your dragon after all." I answer to the looks they sent me.
Hiccup - "Just give me till tomorrow, I'll figure something out."
I start to leave as Astrid follows punching my shoulder for following her earlier today. heading home I see Snotlout waiting outside.
-Snot "Hey where have you been? I've been waiting for ya" he says opening the door "we gotta make sure to watch Hiccup kill the Nightnare tomorrow!"
"Oh I'll be there, dont worry" I say walking in with Snotlout before walking to my room to let my fatigue take me.
The next morning comes and I get a front row seat with my adoptive brother and we watch the cage open and the Nightnare storm out and send a blast of fire right past me and Snotlout. He tried to calm the dragon dropping his helmet and shield but the sound of someone hitting metal sets it off trying to kill him. I grab Snotlouts axe before running around to the gate and hoisting it up on to my shoulder.
"Astrid! Hiccup! This way!" I shout over the sound of the angry lizard.
Astrid quickly arrives as i struggle to hold the large metal frame of the gate up, Hiccup however was cut off and pinned by the dragon. Before I can react a large explosion takes place sending me back, I dont go far as I'm caught by Stoic who holds the gate with one arm above my head. Turning to face the Arena all I see is smoke. Eventually I see Toothless come out of the thick smog on top of the Nightmare. He eventually repels the dragon to its cage after a quick fight but soon after vikings drop from the sides to capture him. In a moment of pure instinct I rush forward grabbing a sword from the wall and the shield Hiccup dropped to protect the Night Fury. I fend off a few men before I'm hit in the back of my head and everything goes black.
I wake up on the cold cement floor of the arena, its pitch black and I can only see the light from the wholes of the gate in front of me. I sit and think of possible ways to escape what I can only assume is the vikings make shift cell for me. Alas even after an hour I have no ideas, I can only hope I'll get some food soon I'm pretty hungry.
A few hours pass and I can hear the sound of someone talking outside, listening closer I can tell it's the gang. Hopefully here to get me out. I hear the sounds of gates opening before someone walks up to the front of mine tapping it lightly.
"Hey what about this one?" says the all to familiar voice of Tuffnut
"Isnt it empty? I thought there were only the 5 dragons?" ahhhhhh and that one was Fishlegs I think to myself.
Walking over to the gate I kick as hard as I can.
Tuffnut - "I guess not?"
Slowly I can hear the sounds of the door opening. Once the lock was up they slowly opened the door revealing me standing there. I see Snotlout and Astrid about to say something but were interrupted by Tuffnut.
Tuffnut - "Is this one mine? It looks boring." his comment earned him a smack from Astrid
They all told me what was going on. Apparently Stoic was using Toothless to find the nest and they were are planning to go and fly these dragons to help them fight the big dragon from before. After that they get ready to leave with Hiccup hopping up with Fishlegs and Astrid gesturing for me to get on her Nadder...
