Chicago October 10, 1871, Tuesday morning
The city was a smoldering pile of rubble. There was still no food or shelter for the many people stranded along the lakefront. Catherine would often burst into spontaneous tears that tore at Katya and Cyrus's hearts. Her weeping was so deep and hopeless. Katya would sit with her until she calmed down.
Katya and Cyrus tried to formulate a plan. It was frustrating that with all their twenty-first-century knowledge, they still were as helpless as anyone else.
As the morning advanced, people were starting to move along the shoreline in search of loved ones. A small amount of food was finally brought in by volunteers, but not enough to feed the multitude.
