I woke up in the same room. On top of me is still the same awake mouse staring at me. I extend my hand in her direction and she jumps on it without waiting, as if she understands what I want to do. I sit up. My "teacher" is still in the room moving furniture to make a sort of classroom. I thought I was done with school, but apparently I was wrong. She finally notices that I'm awake and comes to sit next to me on the sofa.
"You just made your first bond with an animal, take your time to get used to it. We still have a lot to do so if you want to eat or drink tell me now. My name is Fae and I will be your guardian in the ranger tower for the tamer class. "
I stammer a few words in response and realize that it is very difficult for me to speak. During this time the mouse which was in my hand goes up along my sleeve and comes to settle on my shoulder and it makes me nauseous without knowing why. Is it because of the connection she mentioned? I ask for something to drink, while getting up somehow before heading to the chair in front of the painting as Fae leaves the room and comes back with a glass of water. She also sets a cup full of mouse food next to it before heading to the board. The mouse on my shoulder slowly moves down my arm to reach the desk and a new nausea takes hold of me like I'm on a roller coaster. I hang on to the table, blowing gently as my head spins and it ends up calming down when it finally stops moving.
"You're going to get used to it, don't worry. The first link is always difficult for beginners, which is one of the reasons tamers start with a mouse. Sorry to put you through this as soon as you arrive, but most of the time I waste my time explaining things before putting people in front of this test and they either think it's a joke and give up, or they try and give up. So might as well start directly with a test to see who really intends to stay. You plan to stay, right? "
As much as I wanted to tell her that this kind of teaching is like throwing a baby bird from the nest so that it learns to fly, I just wave and say yes. What is happening is extremely violent to my head and I would at least like to know why I am in this state.
"Well, in that case I'll explain what happened. You've made a connection with that mouse. Which means from now on you can feel what she feels. This includes emotions as well as bodily signals such as pain for example. Since you are a beginner you cannot yet understand all the information that comes to you, but it will come with time and experience. Bonding is the first step for a Tamer. This is normally followed some time later by the signing of a contract with the animal in question, but we will come back to this later.
This connection goes both ways, which means that the mouse also feels what you feel to some extent. Most animals don't have a problem with sharing the feelings of the Tamer. In any case, the general rule is that the more intelligent the animal, the more the bond gives complicated signals and becomes difficult for the Tamer to manage. If I had started with a puppy, you would probably be writhing in pain on the floor as I played ball with him. Which therefore brings us to the mouse. It serves as a reference and allows me to know according to the reaction to the link, the synergy of the Tamer with a simple animal.
If the Tamer does not feel anything when the link is established, it is because he does not have enough affinity with the class. On the other hand, if he feels everything in the smallest details from the start, then he has what it takes to stay and make it his main class.
Taming a mouse makes it easy to know that and in addition it is a useful animal. Of course, it will be difficult to confront someone with, but you just found yourself the perfect companion. At night she will be on guard, or she can play the role of scout to make sure there is no danger nearby. Depending on the level of synergy with the animal, you may even ask it for complex tasks. "
After talking without a break, she stops for a few moments and looks at me to see if I have any questions. My mouse seems to have laid down on the table, but she's wide awake from what I'm feeling. I have the impression that as long as she is still, the link does not cause me too much concern.
"I would like to know… Am I the only student here? And I heard that the Tamer class is not very popular, why? "
Fae then sighs and goes to find a chair to sit in front of me.
"You are indeed the only student here. There were still about ten of them a while ago, but over time they decided to switch classes to something else and the last one left last week after being recruited by a guild taking only warriors. There may be Tamers left in the tower, but they haven't been out for so long that they're considered dead.
As for why there is no one left in this class, the reason is simple… it's very complicated to be a real Tamer. First of all, it's a question of talent. Then there is the link which is difficult for some to bear, especially in combat when you feel the pain, or in the worst case, the death of your animal as if it were our own. Add the food costs and you realize that other classes are easier to access and allow you to have better results. Rangers, for example, have only one pet that they train and they don't need a mouse.
You then have the summoner classes which allow you depending on the branch to summon different types of creatures and which only cost you magical energy. If you want to have a mount you have the rider classes. If you really want to, you can also become an animorph to become an animal and so on. The most popular reason for the change of class in any case remains the breaking of a bond by death. The sensation is so painful that most Tamers don't want to experience it a second time. Not to mention the mourning of an animal with whom they have sometimes spent years strengthening the bond and whom they consider part of them. Some go crazy too, but it's still quite rare. That's why there are no more Tamers. There are quite a few people who come to make it a secondary class, but they leave quickly.
BUT, being a Tamer is one of the most rewarding classes for so many reasons. You will make companions who will be ready to stay with you for life. Your pets can become an extension of you through the bond and will never betray you if you take good care of them. Their abilities are so many possibilities for you if you know how to use them. It's a new family. But it's up to you to discover the possibilities that this class offers you. "
Her speech is followed by a long silence and I don't know what to say. My mouse rhythms this moment by eating croquettes. I feel like Fae is waiting for an answer from me and I don't really know what to say to her. I have just arrived in the tower. How can I know what is good for me? If I'm here it's just because I've been told this class is the best for me. At the moment, I'm not sure what to make of her presentation about the pros and cons. In time, maybe I would know what to think. Anyway, nothing is set in stone since I can change class whenever I want from what I know.
Having a family, I don't know why the idea interests me so much that it stays in my head. I stroke the back of the mouse on the table with my fingertip. I have the impression that I can feel surprise and then pleasure coming from her, probably because of the link. The feeling of nausea comes over me a little, but I clench my teeth and look at Fae.
"Honestly, I don't know what to make of all this, but I don't plan on changing classes right now. If I consider that I have no chance in the tower being a Tamer then I will change it, but otherwise I will make it my main class, is that okay with you? "
Fae then smiles as if relieved by my answer. She must have had this conversation many times before and seen people get up and go, but she's still being honest and while I'm not sticking around to please her I'm glad to see that my decision is fine with her. I just hope that she will not be a teacher or a "Guardian" with big gaps in pedagogy as she has shown me so far.
" It's okay with me. But since I went through several stages with you by having you directly create a link with a mouse, you won't get out of here until you know the basics. "
Apparently I can always hope.
