Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 175. Rebellion and Ambush V
He turned his gaze to her. Their eyes met each other, letting her read all the mixed emotions within him. "The Magic Barrier in Golden Light castle still exists." His voice was clear and steady, devoid of any hint of doubt.
Rose's frown creased her forehead. "How come?" she asked in disbelief.
Angel's expression hardened. "Ilex replaced it," he said, his words brief and clipped. "He stole the sword and replaced the magic formation with a new one." Traces of anger and bitterness were evident in his tone.
"Is that possible?" Rose asked, her confusion mounting.
Angel nodded. "Yes. He has access to the magic room. He only needed a few people to bring out the new magic formation and ask the high magic users to activate it. If he drew the sword right before the new magic formation was activated, then no one would notice." His explanation was thorough and detailed.
But despite his words, Rose was still left with a sense of unease. She couldn't understand why he didn't do anything even though he already knew what Ilex was going to do. Angel was known for his foresight and strategic thinking, and yet, he had allowed this to happen. As she looked into his eyes, she couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness.
"Then why can you be so calm?" Rose asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. She couldn't understand how Angel could be so composed in the face of such treachery. "Why didn't you prevent what was happening and instead you chose to let him do it? Won't this put Asteria in danger?"
Angel's response was a cold, sinister chuckle that sent a shiver down Rose's spine. At that moment, she knew that the man before her was not the same gentleman she had spent the night with. He was the dark king of Euphorion, a man known for his ruthless tactics and strategic mind.
"Prevent it?" he repeated, his voice laced with sarcasm. "If I prevent him, he's only breaking the Kingdom of Asteria's laws, not the agreement between us. Then only King Gervis can punish him. And I'm sure he won't have the heart to kill his own son. If I want to kill him and end our long fight, I have to let him attack me. That way I can kill him and all his followers." His gaze was cold and emotionless.
Rose couldn't believe what she was hearing. Angel was willing to let Ilex attack him, to put Asteria in danger, just so he could kill him and his followers. It was a ruthless, calculated move but she couldn't deny that there was a certain logic to Angel's words. Indeed she knew his plan and she knew Angel had put his eye on Ilex for a long time, but she didn't expect that Angel knew the details this well.
But then, a wicked smirk grew on Angel's lips. "Besides... wouldn't it be better if we took care of them in one fell swoop?"
"But isn't this dangerous?" Rose asked, her tone filled with concern as she glanced around at the wounded soldiers being treated. Despite the fact that the damage was relatively minor, with only a few injuries, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. As she watched the soldiers preparing for their long hunt, loading supplies onto their horses, and readying themselves for battle, she couldn't help but question the wisdom of this course of action. "This is just one attack, but many of them are injured," she added, her voice filled with worry.
As Rose looked at the expressions on the soldiers' faces, she couldn't help but feel a sense of confusion. Most of them didn't seem bothered by their wounds at all, moving around as if they were completely unaffected.
Another frown appeared on her forehead as she pondered this strange occurrence. 'How can they not be in pain?' she thought. 'Unless...'
As Rose's expression of confusion and wonderment, Angel couldn't help but let out a chuckle. He could tell that she was trying to piece together the puzzle in her mind, and he couldn't help but find it amusing.
"It's your family's secret medicine, Rose," he said out of the blue as if he could read her thoughts. His eyes shifted to the soldiers, who were moving around despite their injuries. "What do you think is the reason I spent so much time with your uncle last time?" he said casually, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his lips.
