บท 2: At the heart of the forest
"What!?" I screamed, still clenching my ears, now getting angry.
"Have you ever wondered what happened to those men who never returned, the ones you can't get out of your head?" it asked.
This made me quite angry. What right did it have looking though my thoughts? And how was it looking through my thoughts?
I stood, as it seemed to get quieter again and sounding less and less like a whisper- more normal. "H-how do you know what's going on in my head?" I yelled. "No need to yell honey" it said calmly.
"I'm right here"
I turned around because for the first it didn't echo, and I could tell it was right behind me. When I saw it, I couldn't look away. It- she was beautiful, she almost looked human, but she had grey skin with light blue hair and red eyes. My description makes her seem horrifying, but she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. "Well can I come in," it asked, chuckling a little at my awe.
I tried to back up because everything in me said to, said she was dangerous, not to be trusted, but I couldn't. It was like I was standing in concrete
"Come in where,"
"Your mind" she said chuckling like it was so obvious. "What?" I asked. "Close your eyes and clear your mind" it said. "And why should I believe you?" I asked.
"Because I can make your parents come back, I can make them fall back in love. I'll make you have so many friends and you'll look so beautiful"
She sounded so convincing and her voice was beautiful my senses seemed to melt. Melt into a yearning feeling into something I wanted, love.and I slowly hesitantly closed my eyes.
"Hey, stop!" a voice said that sounded like a young boy. Instantly my eyes flew open. There was a boy who looked about my age. "Don't let her in to your mind" the woman sat there looking at the boy- stunned. "How did you-" I began a million questions filling my mind.
"It doesn't matter, just go!"
I ran after him faster than I've ever ran in my life. The boy pushed me behind a tree, "wait here," he said running off towards her. I wanted to run after him, or maybe just tell him not to leave me but I didn't have the breath.
I don't know how long I waited, but it couldn't have been long. He came back and grabbed my wrist. "Lets go!"
We ran for a short amount of time, not stopping or saying a word. Finally, the boy moved a big leaf revealing an entrance to a place that looked like a cave. I ran in, panting, it as he held the leaf open for me. Inside the cave there were two hammocks, and a few sacks that had boxes of food and homemade bottles of water in them. There was also a dim fire lighting up the cave. "What was that?!" I yelled, feeling myself begin to panic now that I could think.
"It's something that wants to get into your mind to kill the rest of the humans" he hopped into his hammock relaxing his eyes. "What!" I yelled " You know what I don't care about, why does it need me?"
"To leave the forest, I'm Jaxson by the way"
I stared at him "Really Now?" I asked. Very annoyed
"Yeah, What's your name"
I put my head in my hands. Well, there was no reason I knew not to tell him. Then I realized, apparently, I almost got mind controlled by a monster and he was telling me his name! This idiot I think. However, Jaxon seemed like my only chance.
Jaxon still stared with his big blue eyes waiting for an answer. I sighed as I said, "It's Oberon." "Oberon" he repeated.
My name is quite unique, my mom picked it because it's the name of a moon of another planet, and she always made sure I knew, I'm as beautiful as the moon.
"Who was that hammock for?" I asked hopefully, because there could be someone else.
"A friend, it's yours now that women, my mom, killed him," Jaxson said. A sad look crossed his face before looking surprised, like he said something he didn't mean to. "No wait!" he yelled as he realized what he said.
"Your what?" I yelled. He shushed me "they'll hear you!" he said in a hushed but angry tone.
I wasn't even sure if I wanted to know who "they" were.
He explained to me that he got lost in the forest and that she saved him and raised him as his own, he was an orphan before, and at first, she was so sweet. But then the men came, and he watched her murder some that she didn't see as important and turn the ones she did into her personal minions. So, he ran away and has been living like this for two years and now she wants him, although she's let up on her search over the years, she still wants to turn him turn him into one of her minions which she tries to turn people into or she'll kill them if they give her too much trouble.
Jaxon also said she can only go into some people's bodies. And mine was perfect because I wanted so much and had so little. I may have been offended if my only thought wasn't sleep. She also needs a girl, so I'm pretty much perfect. Unfortunately. I decided not to question him, whether he was with her or not, I was way too tired.
