"Wanna come to come to my place?" Chloe asks as we leave school.
"I can't, I'm tired.
"Oof. And I thought we could paint each other's nails."
"Next time okay?" I tell her and she nods.
We're about to part ways, when Miles walks up to me.
"Hi." He waves at me.
"What-" Chloe starts but I interuppt her.
"Hey." I greet him back
"Hi Chloe." He smiles at her.
"Miles." She greets back.
"You two know each other?" I ask as I look from Chloe to Miles.
"Yeah. He knows my brother."
"Charming guy." Miles smiles and shakes his head.
Something about that smile at that moment was creeping me out.
"So," He turns to me. "I was thinking if you'd like to hang out with me?"
"I'm sorry." I loop my arm with Chloe's. "I have a date with her." I nod to Chloe.
"But I thought you said-"
"We'd paint our nails at my house." I quickly say. "But I'm sorry, I think we'd have to do it at yours." I squeeze her arm a little and she gets it.
"Right." She turns to Miles. "Sorry Miles, we have a date."
"How about tomorrow then?"
"My aunt and I have this appointment."
"Any time this week?" He tries again.
"Sorry, filled up." I smile apologetically and he nods.
"I'll get you to go out with me." He smiles and walks away.
"Okayy, what was that?" Chloe pulls her arm away and crosses it together.
"Miles took me to the rooftop today, and I had butterflies while talking with him so I don't want to go out with him." I say quickly.
"Miles took you to the rooftop?"
"Yeah." I nod.
"Even I have never been there." I sigh. "But why don't you want to hang out with him?" She asks and I shrug.
"I don't know actually."
"Hope it's not because of my brother?"
Is it because of Nick I declined Miles?
Or was it because I was just scared?
"I don't know either."
"Well, when you find out, let me know. Is. our date still on?"
"Tired."
"Want me to drop you off at the bus station?"She asks again.
"It's fine." I decline
"Raven?" I look at her. "This thing has been bothering me for a while now and I don't know how to say or ask it. I don't even know if it's right for me to ask."
I don't think I like where this is going
"What's up?"
"For the past three years that I've known you, you always decline my offer to give you a ride. I've never once seen you in a car."
Oh god.
"Why?"
I knew this would come.
"I mean, I tried to think of different reasons but nothing really explained the reason why you hate entering cars."
I just wasn't expecting it to come this soon.
"Um..... It's-"
I don't want to lie, but I also don't know what to say.
"Um the day my parents...um-"
Okay now I'm getting anxious.
"I was in the car the night my parents had an accident."
She doesn't say anything for some seconds.
"Oh." She knits her eyebrows together. "Oh." She says again. "Now I feel bad."
"No don't be. It's alright. You have the right to know. I'd also want to know why." I smile gently.
"Yeah but still...." She trails off.
"It's seriously okay." I shake my head.
"So it left you with a trauma?" She asks and I nod.
"Yeah." I clear my throat. "Everytime I'm in a car, I have major panic attacks and I can't help but think about that night." I clear my throat again.
"It must be hard."
"Silly right?" I wipe a tear that was about to fall and I chuckle.
"No it's not. Being paranoid or having a trauma isn't silly at all." She touches my shoulder. "I'm sorry that I always bugged you about entering a car with me."
"No it's alright. You didn't know."
"Well, now I do and I understand."
"Thanks." I smile.
"No. Thank you for telling me." She hugs me. "I'll see you tomorrow." She says when she pulls away.
"Bye." I wave to her and she walks away.
Well, that part has been taken care of.
But the bigger secret still remains buried, and I hope it stays that way.
