7.22% My Neighbor Calls Me Daddy / Chapter 30: Conspiracy (2)

บท 30: Conspiracy (2)

After the police officers left, all of us were still standing on the pavement in front of my house.

"Uncle Evan. I think it's better that you prepare a lawyer for Leo." I cautioned. "Just in case."

Uncle Evan nodded, he thought for awhile, then asked, "Hunter, did Leo do anything wrong?"

"No." I shook my head. "He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"I'll get a lawyer to head to the police station right now." Uncle Evan said in a solemn tone.

***********

Personally, I am not that worried for Leo. He was near the school board when the incident happened and the only thing that can be remotely incriminating was the fact that he ripped off the letter that illustrated the exact location and time of the crime when the crime happened. It was quite an unlucky coincidence but nothing more.

However, since I could not access the surveillance footage of yesterday, I could not see the person who placed the letter at my seat yesterday morning. Therefore, the only route I have now is to go to the realtor and find out the landlord of Flat 4B of the building across of the oak tree.

***********

After Uncle Evan and Aunt June went home to call for a lawyer, I went to the master bedroom to find a suit. After all, a realtor would not cater to a minor walking in alone asking to view an apartment. Luckily, the body size of my father is quite close to mine. Therefore, I can borrow my father's suit to make myself look more mature.

I went in the closet and took out a fresh white shirt, a navy blue suit jacket and a navy blue pants. Since Father is slightly taller than myself, the pants reached all the way down to my ankle. I put on the suit and took a look at myself in the mirror.

"That should do it." I nodded. The suit I grabbed was purchased by me for my father last year from V*lentino. Therefore, it is made with the best materials, accentuating the prominence of the person wearing it.

I went down to the entrance and grabbed myself a pair of plain black Oxford leather shoes and wore it before heading out.

To make myself look more distinguished, I ordered a Ub*rBlack to drive me to the front entrance of the realtor, allowing the people inside to judge my usefulness as a client. Therefore, when I went to the realtor that was closest to the apartment building in question, a woman in her 40s already walked to the entrance and guided me to sit in front of her cubicle.

"Hello. My name is Eva Banks, a senior real estate agent. How may I help you today, Mr...?" The lady asked in a courteous manner.

"Lee. Hunter Lee." I replied in a low masculine voice to make myself sound more mature.

"Yes. How may I help you, Mr. Lee?" Ms. Banks repeated.

"I would like to take a look at an apartment that is up for listing. The address is 1234 XX Drive. 4th Floor. Flat B."

"Let me take a look for you." Ms. Banks went on the computer that was on the side and started typing. After a while, she went to the printer at the back and brought a piece of paper. The paper have the facts of the apartments printed in it.

"This apartment is what you want to see, is that correct, Mr. Lee?" Ms. Banks asked.

"Yes, that is correct. Is it possible to help me arrange a visit to the apartment as soon as possible?" I asked in a polite tone after pretending to take a look at the facts sheet.

"Why don't I place a call with the landlord now and ask if they're available."

I nodded in agreement.

"Please wait a moment." Ms. Banks started dialing on the landline phone located in the middle of the desk and waited.

After the opposite side answered the call, Ms. Banks started conversing with the landlord. I waited patiently.

Ms. Banks ended the call after a few minutes, then she looked at me and asked, "I have arranged for the landlord to open the door for us at 2pm in the afternoon. Is that alright with you, Mr. Lee?"

"That's fine." I replied.

When I headed out of the realtor, I found that Leo texted me this morning.

"Hunter, I would like you to do something for me."

[This section is in the POV of Leo]

Leo was placed in an interrogation room by Detectives Clarke and Lewis. He sat on the metal chair, opposite the police officers. Leo was slightly nervous, as this was his first time ever being in a police station, much less being interrogated.

"Leo, where were you when the time between 4:45pm to 5:00pm on Tuesday?" Detective Lewis asked amicably.

"I was originally located at Class 3-C before heading down to the second floor to take a look at the school board." Leo replied confidently.

Detective Clarke took out a few photos from his file. He placed them right in front of Leo and asked, "Leo, can you please tell me what you were doing here?"

Leo stared at the photos, they illustrated him tearing down the love letter and throwing it to the trash bin nearby.

"I simply thought that since nobody showed up at the oak tree, the love letter that was on the school board was a hoax, so I decided to take it down." Leo said slowly.

"And who put this letter to the school board?" Detective Clarke pointed at the letter on one of the photos and asked.

"I did." Leo answered honestly.

"When did you place it on the school board and why did you do it?" Detective Clarke asked.

"I placed the letter at around 5 minutes after 1st period started." Leo said. "So... around 8:05am. I wanted to prank the person who sent the love letter to Hunter, so I put the letter on the school board for everyone at school to see."

Before the detectives have a chance to continue the questioning, somebody from outside entered the interrogation room. "Good morning, detectives. I am Max Burner, JD. I'm representing Leo Wilson as my client."

Mr. Burner sat on the chair next to Leo and placed his briefcase on the table. He reached into his briefcase and took out a notepad and a pen.

"Can we continue our line of questioning now, Mr. Burner?" Detective Clarke asked in an irritated tone.

"Sure." Mr. Burner nodded.

"Leo, I don't think you posted the letter on the school board just for a prank. You did it to get people to go towards the oak tree, didn't you?" Detective Clarke restarted his questioning with a sharp question.

"Leo, you do not have to answer that." Mr. Burner said. Leo looked slightly distraught.

"You fabricated a love letter, knowing that Hunter will give the love letter to you, then you posted the school board to lure students to the oak tree. Then, you committed arson in order to draw the attention of the masses. When the arson happened, you tore the letter down to destroy the evidence." Detective Clarke accused.

"Detective, everything you said just now were all baseless accusations, without even a single shred of evidence. I would suggest for you to stop this. If not, I'll sue you for defamation."

Detective Clarke and Lewis stopped their questioning. After all, Leo willingly came to the police station for questioning. Also, Leo have an alibi, making it highly improbable for Leo to have committed the crime. The questions early was simply the detectives acting good cop bad cop.

Suddenly, a police officer walked into the interrogation room from outside and said, "Mr. Leo Wilson, you are under arrest."

"What?!" Leo gasped.

"What for?" Mr. Burner asked at the same time.

"For suspected third-degree arson and attempted manslaughter. You have the rights to remain silent..."

As the Miranda rights were spoken to Leo, the officer handcuffed him. Leo was still making a surprised expression when this happened.

"Don't worry." Mr. Burner reassured. "They don't have probable cause to arrest you. I'll get a hearing with the judge right now in order to release you."

Leo was sent by the officer to a holding cell. Mr. Burner, who accompanied him, said, "I'm going to go now. I'll come back after I secure your release."

Leo nodded, he was slightly frightened, but he endured it.

*************

When the officer walked back to the front of the police station, Detective Clarke got ahold of him and asked, "Why did you arrest him? I thought this was our case!"

"Sorry," the officer replied. "Captain's orders."

Detective Clarke's face darkened. He hesitated. "Should I go ask the Captain what is going on or not?" He thought. Then, he decided against it. "As long as the case is in my hands, that's enough."
