บท 24: 23

So here's the second chapter

Luke's POV

" I don't want to go to that house just yet. " I tell Jack as l lean against my car.

" why?! " Jack repeats his question in frustration.

" told you I don't want to talk about it. Stop asking already. "

Jack huffs out a breath and sighs also leaning against my car. I feel his gaze on me and after sometime, he sighs once more. " fine, you can come help me at work. But I'm probably going to be out of there by six. "

" thanks, I think that will be time enough. I'll just find something to do with myself until they go to sleep. "

" have you heard anything about Esperanza from Linda. "

" nope, but I think you're the one I should be asking that question. " I smile to myself hoping to see Jack squirm.

" why would I be the one to answer that question? " he says raising a brow.

" well because last time, I believe you were acting so cozy with her. "

" if you mean helping her in the kitchen means I was acting cozy, then maybe we were all acting cozy with her. " he says rolling his eyes.

" you were still the first to offer to drive her to the hospital. " I say trying to make a point.

" that's only because I understood what she was feeling. " Jack says looking very sad. " I understood what it felt like to know that the only people who truly love you are going to be gone forever. You don't know when but once that day comes, you feel like the earth falls from under your feet. " he sighs and says very quietly " you wouldn't understand. " he walks off towards his car.

That's where he's wrong I do understand because I did lose someone. I know exactly what he's talking about because she was my rock and her death meant that I'd lost my balance.

I unlock my car and get in, shutting the door behind me. I rev up the engine, when my ringing tone startles me. I pull out my phone cursing whoever wants to give me a heart attack. I see Linda's name and picture flashing on the screen. I smile remembering when this picture was taken. It was during one of our group reading. I told her to take a selfie and she claimed she always looked ugly in pictures. When I finally convinced her, she puffed up her cheeks and crossed her eyes. This was all long before Liam came back.

I answer the call feeling nasty and I can't even tell why? But I know that in all my life Linda has been the one person to make me ask myself so many questions. " what?! " I ask getting mad at her for whatever reason.

" who peed in your cheerios grumpy? " she says with a sassy tone.

" is that all you have to say cause I'm hanging up. " I say smirking to myself.

" jeez, hold on will ya Mister " she says letting out a huff of breath.

" you know for someone who was brought up to be elegant you sure talk like a cowboy. "

" and little kids make more sense than you do but you don't hear me complaining. "

" I'll pretend I never heard you say that. " I look ahead to see Jack resting on his car casually with his hands folded on his chest.

I almost forgot the guy.

" so why are you calling me? I don't recall us having any reason to meet up today. "

" can we continue with the list? I'm going crazy out of my mind cause I have absolutely nothing to do and I still haven't heard anything from Esperanza since yesterday when she called. " she sighs weakly and I hear shuffling through the phone and it seems like she's shifting things around.

" what did she say when she called. " I ask trying to find out if Esperanza or her grandmother is okay.

" who? Ah right Esperanza. Well she said she's fine. But I don't really think she is cause Nana is in a coma. We're supposed to be sisters of sorts. I just wish she wouldn't act so strong all the time. " she says sounding mad and kind of sad.

" why didn't you call Liam? " I force myself to ask wanting to know the answer.

" he has this family dinner every Friday and I was invited but I can't eat, so going there only to pick at my food doesn't seem like such a good idea. "

" when was the last time you ate? " I ask feeling unbelievably happy that she hadn't gone with Liam.

" yesterday, I guess. "

Is she trying to kill herself or something?

" fine we'll do something about your list. "

But you'll have to do something for me first.

" so where are you at this moment. " I ask with a smile on my face and my mind set on what I am about to do.

" at home, in my room, wearing off the floor with my pacing to be precise. " she says sounding like a kid on sugar rush.

" give me twenty minutes. "

" sure and Luke, " she says quietly.

" yeah "

" I've missed you. " she says hanging up right after, leaving me completely speechless.

I feel my lips split into a wide grin, my heart feels light and for some reason I just want to laugh. I can't and so settle for smiling like a fool. I turn to my left and the grinning figure at my window makes my heart almost jump out of my throat.

Bloody fool wants to give me a bloody heart attack.

" that was not funny, you can't just go around scaring people like that. " I say glaring at Jack who suddenly bursts out laughing like a hyena.

" Luke you were smiling like a fool. There's only one person I know who makes you smile like... " Jack says grinning once more as his eyes continue laughing at me.

" I don't want to hear it. " I quickly interrupt him, being aware of what he's about to say.

But damn it I can't stop grinning like a fool!
