We drive home in silence, picking up Becky and Dave's siblings.
I and Luke cancel our group reading for the day.
All thoughts of eating leave my mind as soon as I see my bed. I just want to sleep, hoping that it can help me escape even for a couple of hours.
Unknown POV
If I can get those files then I would have somewhere private, somewhere the world can never know of to produce the drugs and weapon. If only that fool... shouldn't think about that, killing him would get me nowhere. I just have to find another way to go about it.
I stand up from my desk, neglecting the reports on the computer and walk towards the window which I'd earlier left open. I push my gray hair backwards, crossing my arms over my chest and staring out the window. Looking out, I don't see the bright lights or bursting excitement of New York city. I saw plans and possibilities, eliminating those with even the slightest mistakes. Just as I'd done all those years back. Even if it cost me. One reason I could never be caught.
I hear the footsteps stomping my way.
There is only one person I know who walks that way.
He knocks twice, once again confirming my suspicions.
" Come in. " I say quietly and turn just as he enters. I raise an eyebrow, my face lacking in expression as usual.
And just as expected, he wastes no time in giving his report. " There's still no sign of anyone making use of the land. "
" Good, just as I said continue to watch, it's the only place we've found and we shouldn't ruin this. As soon as we can get those files then we can make good on our plans. I don't think anything more interesting happened on your little trip, so you can go. " I say turning back to the window.
" actually... " he says pausing as if thinking of how to say this.
I turn my head slightly, annoyed that he has stopped speaking. " speak "
" We found her daughter
" whose daughter? " I ask confused.
" Imelda's daughter. "
" where? " I ask turning quite fast due to the shock.
" that's the strange thing, we found her in the building. "
" did you bring her? "
" no, she got away. She was with friends, they all got away. We don't know where they went. "
" are you sure, it's the little girl? "
" yes, I'm sure it's Linda. She is a replica of her mother. We all saw her, could have mistaken her for Imelda. "
" Then find out everything you can about that girl, we should find her soon and then we'll know what to do next. Leave. " I turn back to the window and just like before my mind strays from the sight before me. But this time, I do not only plan, I see the past.
I remember that winter as clear as yesterday.
After all these years why does she choose to appear now? I have been bored for the last decade. Maybe this will be fun after all.
Luke's POV
Linda has been avoiding me for the past two days, the only time we ever meet up is during the group reading.
I see the dark circles around her eyes and notice her gradually drawing back into her shell.
This all keeps me thinking about how it might all be related to what happened three days back. What even confirms my suspicion and at the same time confuses me is the discussion I overhead Linda and her father having yesterday.
" I think they've been searching for me. " Linda says looking at the floor.
I stood just outside the door listening to and watching them.
" and they won't find you, I have promised this to you and all these years I've kept that promise. I don't plan to break my promise now " her father says drawing closer to her.
I saw tears rolling down her cheeks and her hands flew to her face, where she pressed them against her eyes. " I don't want to go back to that. I don't want to be reminded of everything that happened. " she cried leaning into her father as he rubbed down her hair shushing her and giving her comfort.
I never heard the rest, because they both left to their rooms, cutting off the conversation. But I've been thinking, what is Linda hiding from? Who were those people in that building? Why did that man call Linda Imelda.
I continue trimming the shrubs at the front of the house when I hear the front door open. I turn around to see Linda looking drop dead gorgeous in blue jeans trousers and an off shoulder crop top. Her hair pulled back from her face into a pony tail showing off her beautiful bone structure which is highlighted by little make up. I can barely see the dark circles, I can't help smiling.
" where are you going to beautiful? " I ask wondering what occasion made her dress up.
" to see someone. " she says blushing slightly.
I get this funny feeling in my chest as I see her blushing. " who? " I ask truly curious.
" Libby Cox " she answers turning away.
" isn't that our homeroom teacher's mother? " It's then I remember Austin saying something about seeing a Libby or so. " why are you going to see her? "
She turns around with a nervous look on her face " uhm, she's a friend of sorts...we're...kind of close. I can't just explain it okay. "
" fine, answer me this, is Austin going to be there? " I ask holding my breath.
" yes " she answers turning away for the last time but with a confused look on her face.
I let out the breath I'd been holding in but for some reason I'm hurting and confused and can't do anything about it.
I don't like feeling this way, the sooner I get this revenge over with, the sooner I stop spending time with her.
I realise that Linda left the door open and start heading towards it to lock it, when I see Lucas Gail going down the basement with one of those boxes I'd seen the first day I started working here.
I wonder if that has anything to do with what I heard them talking about.
Linda's POV
The expression on Luke's face a minute ago has gotten me so confused. Why was he so inquisitive about Austin and me? Could it be that he's...
Yeah right, Luke getting jealous over you, i just don't see it.
Whatever
Either way, I'm so excited to see Libby. I wonder what she has to say about Liam. For the last two years, she's been the one giving me news about him. He sometimes calls but we don't talk much because he's always busy, he's probably had a million girlfriends since he's been in Japan. That thought makes me frown.
I don't want him to date anybody. He's the crush I can't seem to get over.
I wish Leah could have come with me but she's babysitting Becky. But then again, it kind of works in my favour cause only Libby and Austin will be there to tease me about my crush on Liam.
I walk into the garage and look at the choices of cars I have. I know I'm not yet sixteen but I will be sixteen next month and I just love that thrill you get when driving with the windows down, clean air blowing on your face and your heart beating to the track playing on the radio. So sometimes I do break rules even if it means I get in trouble and by the way I have no choice, if only Leah were here I'd just enjoy the ride with her at the wheels.
So Ferrari, Lamborghini or Honda X5.
I say Lamborghini, just imagine the look on Austin's face when he sees this baby.
I drive out slowly hoping to see the look on dear Lukey's face but I see him facing the house and barely acknowledging me but when he finally whips his head around, I'm blowing him a sassy kiss as I see his jaw drop down. I speed up and look at the side view mirror to see my dad rush out of the house flaming mad and Luke staring at him in a funny way.
Why is Luke staring at my dad like that?
