The king-captain let Serenica take the lead in weather witchcraft. She was better at it, and Spade had let go of his pride as a Karshaan. Serenica crushed the jar with the prince and gave a long, approving look to her lover.

"What?" he asked. "Did I do something wrong?"

"On the contrary," Serenica said. "I was just wondering how you turned out to be so decent. Your father is a complete…I will not say what. And your mother is a complete and total pushover for him. How did you become such a nice and just man? Has your father always been murderously unpleasant?"
