She had spent more than enough time in the western islands, and what she had seen there had confirmed her already low expectations.

"I wish we could do this some other way," she complained to her captain. "I don't want to go west."

"No one does, yet someone has to," Spade said wearily. "I have to pretend to be a willing participant in this mess. At least you can sigh and moan about it."
