บท 4: Sensei
Ryan wakes up in a dark room. When he sits up, he clutches his head in pain.
"Aw, my head is killing me." He says.
"I tried to warn you about those Cobra's." The janitor says as he meditates next to him.
"Yeah well, I didn't really have a choice in the matter. Where am I?"
"The nurses office."
Ryan tries to get to his feet, but the nurse stops him.
"You might wanna take it easy for a while."the nurse tells him with a smile.
"Right, yeah. I take it that you're the nurse."
"Yep. Bill tells me I'm gonna see a lot of you."
"What can I say, I'm a troublemaker."
The nurse laughs while finishing Ryan's check up. She then turns to leave when the janitor, Bill stops her.
"Thank you, Mai."
"No problem."
The nurse leaves the room.
"Hold on, you took on multiple Cobra Kai's and you're perfectly fine. Who are you, are you even a real janitor?"
"Of course I'm a janitor. Not a well paid one, but a janitor none the less."
"What was that back in the hallway?"
"That was just old fashioned Wolf Fang Karate. Real karate, none of that crap they're learning over at Cobra Kai."
Ryan then gets an idea.
"So you could teach me?"
"Sorry kid, I don't teach."
"Come on, you have to help out."
"Do I?"
Ryan stands up on his feet.
"Look, Cobra kai isn't going anywhere. They'll keep pushing kids around because people are afraid of them. Someone has to stand up to them."
"And that "Someone" is you?"
"Maybe. Depends on if you become my karate teacher or not."
Bill stands in silence and folds his arms.
"I'm not going to be your karate teacher....I'm going to be your sensei."
Bill and Ryan smile, fist bumping each other.
"You start tomorrow morning, I'll send you the location. Be ready."
Ryan grabs his bag and leaves school, but doesn't stay at home. He rides his bike to the hospital that is across town. Soon he makes it to a hospital room and sees his sick mother, Maria Larusso, laying in bed. Ryan grabs his mother's hand and sits beside her. When Maria sees her son she smiles.
"Hey kiddo. How was your first day?"
"It was good, mom. A few issues, but nothing I can't handle."
"That's good, sweet heart. I know it's difficult, you moving schools like this."
"Hey, we needed to move for your treatment, no big deal."
The two smile at each other then hug.
"Well, you better get home before it gets dark. I love you."
"I love you too, mom. I'll be back soon, I promise."
Ryan walks out of his mother's room and talks to one of her doctors.
"Is she getting any better?"
"...I'm afraid not, son. Only time will tell whether or not the treatments will improve her condition. But I'm sure she'll pull through."
Ryan smiles out of hope and at the same time sadness. He heads home, ready for tomorrow, prepared for anything that is thrown his way.
