บท 8: Chapter 8: New Threat

After learning Aimee’s home got emptied out the last day, Kai went back home to spend the night. But he barely could sleep as he worried himself over that the entire night. In the next morning, he wanted to search for Aimee as soon as possible, so he planned to go to school earlier that day.

“You woke up so early. Anything going on at school, dear?” Kai’s mother asked, seeing him descending the stairs already with his clothes changed. She hadn’t even finished baking.

“Uh… Yeah… There’s some… Stuff going on. Can’t be late for that one.”

Of course Kai didn’t want to let his worry come out to his parents since they would not understand, even though it was obvious he was lying and the fact that there was something wrong was drawn all over his worn-out face, at least he knew his mother wouldn’t ask directly after a lie like that.

Once arriving at school, Kai went straight to the dean’s office.

“Aimee Campburn? Sorry son, she moved out. Her family had to go to the other side of the town, so she asked for transferring to Sunny Hill.”

“Oh…”

‘Well, if she is getting transferred, I guess there’s nothing I can do… And she didn’t even say anything, too…’

At first, Kai accepted the news with disappointment. He would not be able to clarify the innumerous questions he had now.

But as the classes passed by, more and more that disappointment turned into suspicion. Why would Aimee transfer just now? At that time? At that crucial time? Right after those things happened at school? Right after all that happened to him? Right after Sally?

‘I still want to know exactly what happened. I can’t just let a random girl lie that I tried jumping from the roof and ruin my reputation and then disappear like that! Today, after school, I’m setting this straight.’

After the classes, Kai went back home and turned his computer on. He planned to search for Sunny Hill to try and see if he could get some info on newly transferred students. Just going there and asking for the address of a student might not work and he would hate to leave emptyhanded after crossing the town.

“Let’s see… What do I type? ‘Sunny Hill High School transferred students’… Do they even keep a list of those? Oh, not that Sunny one, I need to include the name of the town… There. Huh? What is this…?”

Kai ended in some sort of dirty blog ran by students, destined to trash-talk each other and spread gossip going on at the school.

“The newly transferred girl is really weird…”

Kai clicked the link.

He got invested and browsed the blog out of curiosity. A lot of stuff was going on there.

“The new girl not only is unusually quiet and acts funny, but I believe she brings bad omen to the class. As you all know, there is this late trend of putting snake scales in other one’s lockers. I always hated that because the thought of people searching for peels in the yard during interval… you know… Anyway. Last week there was that… Episode where somebody put an actual living snake inside Lenna’s locker and it was all that fuzz. But I tell you. If you want to get snake-related, every time you get close to the new girl, something snake related happens. I spoke to people who saw snakes in the girl’s room, in the corridors… People say then can hear hissing when they get near her, it’s really strange. And now, after she got transferred, Lenna fought her boyfriend over that lie that was told about Hanson being the one who put the snake there. I tell you, I really think there is something wrong with her

“Hmm…” Kai was just scrolling and following with the eyes, with one of the hands on the left cheek. “This sounds exceptionally suspicious. Are people seeing things? Hearing things? Just right after the student transfers? Would that be Aimee? The description looks like her. But it could be another one and she is just investigating, who knows...”

Kai leaned back in his chair and looked at the ceiling, his both hands on the back of his head.

‘Maybe Aimee is the problem!? It is a fact that spiked dog-thing appeared there in the school, but the question is: why? Is she chasing the ghosts? Or are the ghosts chasing her?’

Kai got up.

‘Well… now that I know what the gossip is about, I can go there and see it for myself. It’s a good chance to test my power of feeling the ghosts, too. But mostly… I just wanted to talk to her about the things.’

Kai took the dust off his bike and headed to the other side of the town. Sunny Hill was another school located in a pretty area surrounded by trees, similar to Goldenville. It was known there were a lot of snakes in the area, though. That’s why pranks and stories like that weren’t too far from the usual.

The time passed in the blink of an eye, as Kai traveled on his bike all the way from his neighborhood. He decided it was better to enter the school area from the backside. If he could not blend in with the other students maybe he could try sneaking from there. His plan was simply checking out.

But the plan changed the moment he got about half a mile from the entrance. The same feeling he felt when he entered Sally’s house got charge of his body. It was like a really enhanced shiver.

‘I wonder if this is the bad vibration those spiritual leaders speak of? I never thought it would be an actual, physical vibration… Well, this beats it. There is something around…’

Instead of feeling the intensity moving away like the monster was running and trying to hide, Kai felt it getting stronger this time.

‘I think this one might be chasing after a fight, rather than trying to escape. Funny because I’m pretty sure it can notice my power as well… This should be better for me. At least I don’t need to spend time looking for it. I just need to find an empty place and wait there. If it wants to fight it is definitely not going to waste an opportunity on a deserted place with just me around.’

Kai threw his bike on the floor and went to the wall at the side. He then jumped the wall inside Sunny Hill’s limits.

It was a very far-off area, with a lot of grass and the trees covered the view. If there was to be someone there it would be only teenage couples trying to hide away from the inspectors. But nobody like that seemed to be there at that time.

Kai stood there, in the middle of the grass, and just like he had read in the blog, he could hear some hissing sounds. The hissing felt very off. He wasn’t sure whether it came from around or from inside his head.

‘This sound… I’m pretty sure I’m the only one hearing it…’

Rattling noises started coming from the bushes right in front of him. And the intensity of the ‘bad vibration’ got even stronger.

‘Ok, little monster, you can come out now.’
