Rhys woke her with a kiss. "I have another surprise from you", he whispered in her ear.
"I don't think I can take any more surprises. I might die." Pearl yawned and sat up. She looked around the room and her eyes stopped at a dress hanging on the window. Her heart pounded. It was white with spaghetti straps and embroidered flowers scattered all along the bodice, made of light and simple material with a slit up in the right leg. She looked at Rhys. He smiled. "There's a reason I brought you here. And it wasn't just for a vacation. It was for our honeymoon." He continued,"Marry me today. We will still have the big wedding in June for our family and friends. But this, today, is just for us. We won't have to tell anyone and it can be ours for a little while before the media finds out. No one knows. I planned this very secretively. Marry me." He got down on one knee and presented her with another ring box. She took it and opened it. Inside was a platinum wedding band. She picked it up and saw there was an inscription inside. "The people look like flowers at last." It was Bukowski. She looked up at him, a tear streaming down her face. "Yes. Yes I would be honored to marry you today", Pearl hugged him.
"But I need to get you a ring. And I need to run to town. Alone. Can I take the rental car?"
"Of course. But be back here and ready by 5. Our wedding is at 545 so we can see the sunset."
She smiled and hugged him again, and kicked him out of the bedroom. She had to try on her dress. Where did he find it? It was perfect. The hem came to her ankles. She wasn't used to that being as short as she was. It fit perfectly. She threw on another sundress and hat and took off into town. There was a shopping center with several stores lined along a street. She needed shoes and something sexy for the night. She also needed to find a ring. She looked at several places but found no sandals she liked, so she decided on being barefoot for the ceremony. She did find a nightie that was soft and feminine. She walked past a handmade jewelry and gift shop and went inside. There were all kinds of unique statues and vases and glass cases of uniquely made necklaces and bracelets and earrings. She found a case of rings and looked to see if anything jumped out at her. A man came over, "Good morning. Can I help you find something?"
"Yes. I'm looking for a wedding band. Something unique. I don't have a lot of time so I was hoping something would catch my eye." She looked over what was in the case and felt disappointed. Sure, they were all nice but nothing stood out for Rhys. "I just finished a couple of rings. I will bring them out. Hold on", The man said. He returned with a tray holding three rings. Pearl couldn't believe it. The center ring was beautiful, it had what looked like black and gray seashell imbedded into the design. "I love the seashell one in the middle", she said. He smiled and handed it to her for a closer look and said, "That isn't seashell. It's pearl." She put her hand on her mouth and smiled. She told him to bag it. "Does it need sizing? This is a size eleven in men's", the man asked. Pearl wasn't even thinking of that. She had no idea what ring size Rhys was. "I don't know his ring size." She put her head down.
"What size shoe does he wear?", the man asked.
"I believe a ten and half or an eleven."
"This should fit him fine. But feel free to bring it back if it doesn't. It's hammered gold and I'd prefer to do the sizing for you." He smiled and handed her the bag. She thanked him, telling him he made her day.
She got back to the house with plenty of time to get ready. She was starving and found some fruit in the refrigerator. Rhys was no where to be found and she assumed he was getting things set up. She walked to the bedroom and found a note. "Meet me on the beach at 530. I love you." And laying next to it was a floral lei, a floral crown and the most beautiful bouquet of tropical flowers she had ever seen. She put the bouquet in water and started getting ready. She knew he liked her natural looking so she only put on foundation and highlight and some neutral eyeshadow and a little mascara and lip gloss. She wore her dark hair down with loose curls that fell to just above her waist. She looked in the mirror and began to cry. She looked like a Hawaiian bride. She was marrying the man from the bookshop today. The man that saw her as something extraordinary. The man that gave her this amazing new life. It was all surreal. She grabbed his ring and walked outside.
