บท 246: Overrunning the enemy (2)
The more the enemy knows the better they will be able to respond. And really, after hearing that explosion the logical conclusion should be to assume that the army gunners here are still fighting hard. If we suddenly breach this place there shouldn't be any force prepared to stop us.
All I need to do is take down this captain, that way he can't blab about the soon to happen breach or my special existence. Actually, I don't really need to take him down myself. With the army gunners being dogpiled and most of the melee troops killed or wounded by that grenade I just need to stall. Once the skull goblins finish up the stragglers the captain will be buried by numbers.
He too seems to be well aware that time is not his ally. Pressed for time, he decides that his best chance lies in escaping and alarming the other teams. He keeps me at bay with a few well aimed shots and tries to back away.
The moment he notices that I didn't follow up immediately, he turns and runs. He looks to be putting his all into sprinting out of this choke point. He doesn't even go for his radio since that would force him to slow down. He's giving me no chance to catch up.
He was a strong opponent…
But I, unlike what he is probably thinking of me, am not a goblin who is just good at fighting. I know magic too.
I sheath one dagger and grab one of the rock needles I prepared in advance. I send two energy daggers after him with one hand and magically shoot the rock needle from the other.
I'm still feeling smug when that conniving bastard spins around, handgun drawn and six energy handguns appear around him. Well shit. He wasn't trying to run but instead laid a trap for me.
Previously, I was too close and he didn't have the time he needed to effectively use his energy gun skill. He must have realized that and acted accordingly to make best use of his skill.
Most of the smugness is wiped off my face. Most, because a tiny bit remains at the sight of his shocked expression. He begins to rapidly fire and in the hail of energy and physical bullets my energy daggers are torn apart.
The rock needle, however, passes the bullet rain untouched and pierces straight through his chest. His little trap had not accounted for me being able to use offensive magic that was hard to hit with bullets.
Sadly, I don't escape unscathed either. I threw myself to the side the moment I saw the energy guns appearing but my left arm still got hit by two bullets. Still, I'm doing much better than my opponent.
With my only obstacle cleared, I swiftly run in the direction that captain wanted to go. I open my dungeon map while running and target the closest choke point of the first defense line.
Behind me a slightly diminished horde of skull goblins will soon charge out but I doubt they'll be enough to tip the scales. The two remaining grenades I'm carrying on the other hand should easily cause one or two breaches.
Navi, can Vespasian send another 5'000 skull goblins through the gate?
<Already on it. 15'000 are on the move as we speak. Even if your plan fails at this point, we have already achieved our objective of shaking the first two lines of defense. If you succeed we might even be able to directly take this floor back.>
Wait, that sounds like you thought I wasn't going to make it!
<Frankly we didn't. As you saw, the army gunners aren't to be underestimated. If not for you ingenious move to get and use a grenade, you probably wouldn't have been able to breach that choke point. Vespasian just hoped that you could make them feel pressure. Repeating the same plan a few times would eventually allow us to break through their defenses.>
It kind of hurts to see how little confidence you have in me. However, that also means I'll get a nice bonus for going above and beyond expectations, right?
<Greedy little money grubber. You'll get your bonus and then some. If you recapture this floor today, the loan you took to buy your house will pretty much be payed off.>
Then I better give it my all! Gotta earn that bonus!
I can already see the first line of defense in front of me. Like with the second line of defense, it is a choke point where army gunners are furiously firing at the advancing skull goblins.
They seem to be pressured but not to the point where the captain of this team has had to use his grenades. I wonder, if that captain is close enough to the blast, will the grenades he carries blow up too?
Only one way to find out!
While running I take aim, remove the grenade's pin and chuck it at the army gunners. The grenade lands among them as I skid to a halt and run back to where I came from.
A glance over my back reveals horrified expressions before the blast goes off. After the first explosion a second one, much more intense than the first one follows. I guess three grenades going off simultaneously makes for a much bigger bang.
These explosions should be enough to cause a breach here. As I run further away from that choke point, I hear people approaching. I round the corner and see a large group of soldiers rush towards me.
My guess is that each choke point from the second line of defense sent a dozen soldiers as support. After all with all those explosions something had to be wrong. Good thing they met me. Well, bad for them but whatever.
I pull the pin of the last grenade I have and charge at them. The soldiers don't seem to view me as much of a threat. A few of them prepare their swords to strike me down but right as I arrive within their range of attack, I throw the grenade.
It flies over their heads, catching their attention. I throw myself to the ground and cover my head with my arms.
An explosion rocks the ground and I get covered in blood. As I stand up, only a dozen soldiers are left alive.
