I miraculously gained a level and my bonus stat for strength went up by one. But more importantly, make-shift crafting went up by one and I gained woodworking at level three.

That's not normal, is it?

<Yeah, it isn't. We've detected both your instructing skill, as well as your dismantling skill, become unusually active while you were carving. The reaction was similar to what we usually detect when a skill levels up. I would theorize that both skills attempted to evolve but were restricted by unfulfilled conditions.>

So I'll level up my dismantling the moment I get enough practice. But what is the condition for instructing to level up?

Actually, why did it even react?

<Most likely, you translating your knowledge from dismantling to woodworking was seen as teaching, and since you are a monster you fulfill all criteria for the skill to function.>

But still, I gained a skill at level three!

<Largely due to your dismantling skill. Also, we suspect that the next level of your instructing skill will allow you to indeed awaken skills for monsters.>

Don't I already do that?

<No, you animate them to train and increase their chances. We are talking about immediate acquisition of skills that might not be obtainable through just training.>

That sounds useful and overpowered. Do I have to worry about Darwin beating the ever-living crap out of me again?

<He is so guilt-ridden since Jade's incident that he probably won't even care enough to give you the evil eye.>

That's good. Onwards to make clubs then!

While I am peacefully sawing and carving away at my shaved logs, the sound of war horns makes my hands pause.

Navi, is there a problem?

<Negative, no problem. The adventurers are just mounting another futile attempt to retake this floor.>

Futile? So there's no need for me to help?

<Vespasian wants his legions to handle this. They are unmatched in grassy plains like this so letting your skull goblins die here would be a waste. Though I do encourage you to watch.>

I yell at the skull goblins to stay where they are and jog off in the direction of the entrance to the 15th floor. Once I get a bit closer I see numerous figures move out of the gate before forming various formations and combat units. I'm not sure that calling them adventurers does them justice.

<In truth, most of them aren't even adventurers in the original sense of the word. The vast majority is part of some organizations' military forces. We just lump them all together since it makes no difference to us.>

I see the enemy preparing to attack but where are the defenders?

Turning my head I spot the legions slowly retreating. What the hell are they doing that for?

I suddenly feel my shoulders being grabbed by large, bird-like claws. Then, I am lifted into the air by the creature above me.

<Don't panic Vespasian sent a harpy to give you a view of the battle from up above. He wants you to observe and tell your daughter of his might.>

I won't, but thank you.

I feel like the harpy is about to drop me but nothing happens. With a much higher vantage point, I resume my observation of the battle that should happen below.

The three legions have stopped retreating after reaching the halfway point between the entrance and exit of the floor. Each legion distances itself from the others and splits into ten units that I vaguely remember Quinn telling me are called Cohorts. They form two lines of five cohorts per legion and seem ready for battle. Each legion is then flanked on both sides by a hundred or so undead riders.

The large army of adventurers begins to move forward and I am a bit scared by how many there are. Can the legions really take this many?

<Actually, we have the numerical advantage. These legions each consist of 6000 legionaries and if you add the equites you get around 18600. The adventurers only have about 15000 people here.>

Equites?

<Roman cavalry>

I must have been fooled by the open formation the adventurers are using. They look like they have way more men than our side. Of course, the legionaries standing in a tight formation also doesn't make them look any bigger.

The adventurers charge and quickly split into different groups. The human soldiers split into two disorderly groups and aim for the two legions on the side. A third unit of short but stout-looking armored figures, most likely dwarves, marches toward the legion in the center.

The elven scouts stay back and shuffle around suspiciously. I don't know what they are planning but they are probably waiting for the others to engage before making their move.

As the two faster-moving human units enter into a range of a hundred meters of the legions they are facing, the five cohorts in front open their shield walls and take a throwing stance. Before I question their outstretched empty hands, they each materialize a javelin and throw it with great force.

Hundreds of javelins fly through the air as the human soldiers shout warnings and raise their shields for protection. Countless energy shields come into existence as the javelins rain down on them.
