I think I've grown quite accustomed to living in this little community of monsters. Cruella has been giving me pointers on how I can get the skills I need to successfully evolve into an elemental slime.
Raising some of those resistances still proved unexpectedly troublesome to acquire and level up. Fire resistance was no problem since Flicker is a flame spirit and has many fire-related skills. The pain was pretty bad but to reach my goals I endured!
Getting the water resistance skill proved… trickier. Water does not have any effect on me if I just touch it. To get a resistance towards something it needs to damage you or be part of an attack.
Cruella's approach was novel to me. I have jumped into water from great heights more times than I am comfortable with. And the outcome, successful as it may have been, wasn't that bountiful.
While this particular training had given me seven levels of blunt resistance, the two levels of water resistance had been the main goal. It quickly became apparent to me then that there was a good reason for the elemental slime to be rare. I even suspect that all the ones humanity discovered so far were spawned by a dungeon instead of having evolved themselves.
Earth resistance has a similar story to water resistance. Uncle Gary, being a gargoyle, has the ability to somewhat control the earth. His main attack using that ability is to launch sharp rocks the size of a tank shell.
Those damn rocks damn near killed me a few times and again, I gained more levels in stab resistance than I did with earth resistance.
Only wind resistance managed to level up slightly faster than the accompanying slash resistance. Still, I'm not going into that dreadful area again! That tunnel was teeming with wind blades of all sizes and while my life was perfectly safe as long as I stayed at the entrance the feeling of having layers of yourself shaved off continuously is harrowing.
My free time was spent using alchemy to make various useful things for the community. While most members of the community can't use them, the potions I make are treasures for organic monsters like Gobi who have no other quick source of healing. Medicinal herbs aren't exactly common in dungeons but due to the high ambient mana in the dungeon, they regrow in certain spots and can be gathered regularly.
A few hunting trips outside made me hit level ten in no time at all. Having Gobi and Bonerattle as support made things much less tense.
Life here isn't exactly entertaining though I was quite interested in the backstories of my fellow monsters.
Gobi used to be a lumberjack who cut trees in dungeons. The industry for wood from dungeons had grown exponentially ever since the first businesses had launched.
Cutting trees in dungeons was a lucrative way to earn money as a lumberjack but the death toll increased right along with the industry's popularity. Gobi had earned good money for a few weeks before misfortune struck and he failed to run away in time. Worst of all the escorts their company had hired to protect them on such an occasion had run away too since the monsters hadn't been easy to handle.
Bonerattle used to be a musician. He was a drummer in a band. At the request of a few rich music enthusiasts, his band and a few others had prepared to give a private concert inside a dungeon. The spot they had chosen was relatively safe, looked good, and was confirmed to have great acoustics.
The adventurers hired to protect them had also been of a higher and more trustworthy caliber. Unfortunately, even though they had stayed and fought to the last man they had failed to stop the sudden stampede that occurred that day.
Gobi and Bonerattle still hold on to their former professions. Gobi uses an ax to fight and seems to have acquired a few specific skills for that exact purpose. Bonerattle sees his new completely skeletal body as a sort of instrument to be used to achieve a drum-like effect. Sonic-based attacks are a terrifying thing for enemies that have well-developed ears or fragile physics.
Veronica didn't want to talk about her past and Cruella didn't elaborate on what she had already told me. Uncle Gary on the other hand turned out to be a real chatterbox.
He used to be an adventurer who'd fight in dungeons regularly. His class had been a monk and he still retained the same fighting style.
The smooth creation of this community was partially owed to him. He knows much about how adventurers act and what places are usually be safe from them. Everyone here respects him a great deal just for that. On top of that, he's also crazy strong from what I've been told. Not at the level of the drake outside but enough to act as a role model for the younger generation.
And now, it's time for me to evolve and become more useful to the community too. The whole process sounds exciting but as soon as I go to sleep my consciousness fades and when I wake up it's done.
