บท 188: Investigator Kelly (1)
"Yes, Tele left some sandwiches for me in the staff room. What about you?"
"I was just leaving the employee dining hall when it happened."
"Did you see what happened?"
"Parts of it, before my eyes exploded."
"YOUR EYES EXPLODED??!"
Wrong choice of words. I had originally been trying to calm her down but I seem to have had the opposite effect. Melody is pushing me against the kitchen worktop with unexpected force while trying to get a good look at my eyes.
I gently grab her shoulders and hold her at arm's length. She seems to realize that my eyes are fine and calms down again.
"My eyes are fine, silly. Navi gave me a potion that can perfectly restore even lost limbs. And it's not like I gained nothing from it."
"I don't care if you gained something! I can't stand seeing you get hurt."
Melody is very cute when she pouts and I can't resist the urge to hug her and tease her a bit.
"But you didn't see me get hurt, did you? You only heard me say it."
"Shameless!"
She angrily beats her fists against my chest but there isn't enough strength behind her movements to hurt me. Even if she tried to hurt me I am currently much stronger than her and would barely feel a thing.
After a few moments, she stops and hugs me back.
"If you dare tell the girls what happened at work today you sleep on the couch!"
"There's one little problem with that."
"And what would that be?"
"We live on the same street as the company and the girls walk past it on their way to and back from school. A half-destroyed building front will probably catch their attention."
"Just say it was a gas leak or something."
"It's Quinn we are talking about here. She'd probably start elaborating on the physics of a gas leak and tell me off."
"So you want to tell them that we nearly died? They don't know that you can come back!"
"Relax, I'll tell them that some adventurers made trouble and Darwin took care of it. You were far away and I was with Navi who used magic to keep me safe."
"Isn't that exactly what happened?"
"Things got a bit more violent I think but I didn't see much. Also, I need to prepare for the interrogation that's going to happen."
"Guy! What interrogation?"
"The front part of the building was decimated. Do you really believe the police aren't going to investigate?"
"And they'll come here?"
"Most likely."
*ring ring
Already? That was rather quick. I expected them to come tomorrow.
<I'm actually astonished that they only arrived now. This incident involves multiple high-level adventurers being killed during an attack on a company that has a lot of high-level customers. The investigation team arrived via a teleportation spell only minutes after you left to get Melody.>
We've been here for a while now so it is weird that they've only rung the doorbell now. The time it takes to walk from the main entrance of the company to our door should be negligible.
"Quinn, Cassidy! Why are you with the police? Did you do something?"
Now that doesn't sound good. Those two should only be home in two hours.
I start to walk toward the door but relax upon hearing Quinn's calm voice explain the situation.
"Mom, we didn't do anything bad. Our last period got canceled because apparently, some smart-ass student poured some laxatives into the teachers' coffees. Only a few of them are fine and the rest is being brought to the hospital because that idiot screwed up the dosage. When we came home we saw this lady stand awkwardly before the door so we decided to ring the doorbell for her."
Cassidy immediately follows up in her overly hyper way.
"When we walked past daddy's workplace it was all beat up. Did something happen? Is daddy home yet?"
I appear near the door at that moment and wave towards the girls in greeting while looking at the investigator.
Young! That's the first thing that pops into my mind when I see her. She must be barely above twenty and she's already an investigator.
I do not do so purposefully but while looking at her a complete status appears in my mind.

She doesn't react at all so I take it my skill is too strong for her to notice. Funny that the skill is only on level 2 though.
Still, her level is low but those skills are pretty good. Truth sense probably means she can tell if I am speaking the truth or lie. Gotta be careful.
<Make sure to answer by either evading or saying broad terms that give the wrong idea but are true. Her skill isn't advanced enough to sense the intent to hide the truth.>
Well, that's a relief.
"Daddy, you're okay! What happened to your workplace?"
Cassidy bolts into my arms like an arrow loosened from a bow. Quinn acts more subdued. She's probably more interested in what that investigator is doing here.
The lady is visibly uncomfortable and I get the feeling that she just wants to turn around and run away. But she stands her ground and addresses Melody and me with a voice that is only shaking a little.
"I presume you are Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin?"
"Yes, we are."
She nods at my response and continues a bit more confidently.
"I am Kelly Bertold, an investigator from the police. I need to ask you some questions concerning the incident at your workplace. May I come in?"
"Of course, come inside. We only just came home ourselves."
