Of course, by asking Lily this, this meant Lily would also get to partake in the academy as well. It'd also mean she'd get to possibly make new friends, get the education she never properly got, and learn and prepare alongside her best friend.
It was an amazing opportunity she couldn't possibly pass, as everyone knew that ZALE had a prestigious reputation and was extremely difficult to enrol in. Only the wealthy or the extremely gifted got the chance to enrol there. How much the tuition fees were per year could've kept Lily and her parents well-fed for years.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that she couldn't possibly miss. It was all her decision if she wanted to pass up on such a rare opportunity. This was her one way ticket out of the palace for now.
Her eyes twinkled with excitement as she nodded, agreeing to be her lady-in-waiting. Yet if only they knew what was to come. For one, she had to leave the palace just to go to ZALE for a few months, not to mention quit her job as a palace maid.
Of course, the King and Queen would provide for their expenses, but this would be a grand change.
ZALE was prestigious and well-known; all the students there had wealthy backgrounds and were naturally spoiled with their parent's money. There were some that were friendly, but the odds of that were slim. Emma being a maid's daughter would cause her to be different from all the other students. Lily coming from a poor background of nothing but poverty and being Emma's lady-in-waiting also wouldn't help either. The odds were stacked up against them in all ways.
Yet Lily was different. She didn't care about the odds. This was a perfect opportunity, and no matter what the small downsides were, she'd take it.
ZALE also had several private boarding houses for the girls and boys who stayed in separate accommodation. Lily being Emma's lady-in-waiting automatically meant they'd be roommates.
Lily and Emma already knew this of course, as they'd heard much about ZALE.
Lily had already made a decision. This was an opportunity she just simply couldn't miss. She was going to ZALE.
"Of course I'd be your lady-in-waiting, Em. But I do have one question. What's a lady-in-waiting?" She asked, unsure of what a lady-in-waiting was.
Emma was stunned, forgetting one thing. She hadn't explained to Lily what a lady-in-waiting was in the first place.
"A lady-in-waiting is more of a personal assistant to a royal. Of course, I'd never ask you to do anything for me, since you're my best friend and all, but rules are rules. By being my lady-in-waiting, you're going to be more of my 'secretary', 'assistant' but I rather the term companion. There are some silver linings, like how we get to spend more time together at ZALE, and the possibility of getting a royal title as well. Being a lady-in-waiting is a lot of work, Lil. If you don't want to be my lady-in-waiting and rather stay at the palace, I'd be totally fine," Emma rambled, now feeling quite guilty for inviting her best friend to ZALE just to be her assistant of sorts.
Lily took in the information well. She'd rather spend time with her best friend at ZALE rather than work as a palace maid. She thought there were going to be more catches or downsides, but if she only had to do such things, she'd gladly accept the offer.
"Em, of course, I don't mind doing those things. I rather be your lady-in-waiting than work as a palace maid. That's what besties do. And besides, think of all the fun we're going to have there, other than all the studying we're going to be doing, of course," she said.
Emma pulled her best friend in a tight embrace. Lily had always been supportive of whatever she did, and was as protective as she was caring.
She was the perfect best friend.
Lily returned the embrace and patted her best friend's back as they separated.
"Don't go all sappy on me, Em. Remember, we have to pack. If I know anything about ZALE, it doesn't require a uniform, and the students there are usually dressed from head to toe in the latest designer brands. If we want to be as stylish, we have to start preparing now. We wouldn't want you to be…" she trailed off before gasping dramatically.
"Underdressed," she said, saying it as if it was a crime and placing her hand to her own forehead.
Emma burst out into laughter.
"ZALE starts in two weeks or so. We do have quite a lot of time on our hands, but you can never be too prepared. Come on, you do have some free time now that you're done with your duties. Let's go to the guest suite I'm staying in. You won't believe the clothes there. We could get you some outfits to wear at ZALE. It'd be a great way to pass the time," Emma suggested.
Lily's eyes widened.
"I get to see what's in the massive closets of one of the palace guest suites AND pick outfits together with you? Consider me interested. Let's go. I only have a few hours till my next shift," she replied ecstatically.
Emma looped her arm around Lily's. She grinned.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go and choose some outfits," she announced.
