บท 11: Maiden
Serse and Dauntice sat at the bottom of a lake. Dauntice explained he had discovered he could breath under water, and with his blessing so could she. Dauntice could have gone back to the castle, back he didn't feel like being ordered around by Onicent. The job he had been assigned was being done. Once and awhile he felt a tug at his skin, which told him his gift was being used. Serse's long hair swirled around her, and even under water she glowed orange. He asked her when she had transformed and she told him the story about the torch. Perhaps it was then he realized his feelings. After all Serse was beautiful, not quite in the way Airabella was, her beauty was deeper, and Dauntice was washed away by it.
"Serse," he said. They'd been in a silence.
She looked up at him and a look crossed her face, but he carried on.
"Stay with me, under the oceans. I promise I'll make you happy, you'll be safe here, far from Onicent. I'll make sure he never lays a hand on you. I want you to rule over the waters with me as my wife." He said all this quickly.
Serse gave him a shy smile, but shook her head, "its not that I don't love you Dauntice. I don't love any man anywhere."
Dauntice opened his mouth to say something back, but Serse interrupted him by reaching forward and placing a hand over his heart, "you already love something else." She said quietly, "and you'll come to love her far more then you'd ever love me. She'll need you and you'll be there for her."
Dauntice felt perplexed. He studied Serse's expression, but saw no laughter in her face, she was serious about what she said. "Will you never marry then?" He asked at last.
"I wish to be a maiden forever," she said lightly. But he could feel how stronger she believed in this.
"I'll protect you then, I'll help hold up your honor."
She smiled and retracted her hand, where it had been was warm even in the water. "Thank you brother." As she spoke these words he watched an intricate symbol start to spread on her forehead, it was small and appeared as a flower. In later times this symbol was adopted by others who chose to be maidens. It became the symbol of Serse.
Dauntice took his eyes away from it. "You can stay here till the wedding, I have a castle under the ocean, you'll be welcome there."
Serse considered, but she could see Dauntice wished her to stay with him, so she accepted.
Both swam quickly through the sea to rest in the palace, but as they swam Dauntice thought about his soon to be love. Though he didn't notice colorful coral had began to spring up on the bottom of the ocean where they passed.
