Chapter 63
Reskeme waited under his tree, He watched the far tree line waiting for something, anything, Carley and Dusty were hiding by rock out of sight by the waterfall. Reskeme grumbled but orders were orders, and soo he waits for his sergeant to give him permission to scout further."
He supposed it made sense, both Carley and Dusty were injured and would be too slow to scout ahead, Reskeme wasn't a complete idiot, if he went by himself it was certainly going to be his death. He gripped his naginata excitement flooding him as he heard the sound of rocks clattering over the cliff, He rose and stood to his feet, he heard the clatter of stone on the stone again. both Carley and Dusty stood their heads peeking from over the rocks as they wave down.
The army must have arrived, Reskeme smiled to himself, he waited as Carley and Dusty exchanged words with a soldier who immediately turns back and ran down through the steep fall. Reskeme winced, He really wasn't looking forward to walking among the loose line of soldiers, They were soo loud the Darva would know they were there from a league away.
Reskeme stiffened a man in a brown and yellow robe climbed up the waterfall and grinned ear to ear when he spotted reskeme relaxing under a tree. The master mage walked across the open field glancing wearily numerous times towards the trees.
Out of the rain Reskeme was rather dry but he couldn't believe the Master mage, he held a long pole with fabric stretched at the top covering him from the rain, he was dry and his clothes somehow were unruffled by the long hike. The most ridiculous part in Reskemes opinion was the fabric of the Umbrella was a bright blue.
His musings were cut off as Kellar casually reached down and pulled a rock from the ground before glancing at reskeme. Reskeme channeled his mana and formed 4 runes in front of him, the rock flew through the air and smack into the shield bouncing off his hastily formed shield. Kellar said," well done, I knew you could do it." clambering to his feet Reskeme hid behind his shield, glaring at the master mage.
reskeme said," what was that for?" Kellar said," I'm supposed to train you, if you can't stop a slow rock than an arrow is going to kill you." Reskeme felt his cheeks burn, he said," at least warn me first." Kellar reaches down for another rock picking it up, a rune formed on the rock, Reskeme channels his mana forming a wall in front of him in seconds. The flaming rock slammed through the first unstable shield before bouncing off the second one.
Kellar said," even when you create your runes quickly you must make them correctly, I see you have been practicing and that's good if you hadn't learned to cast the basic wall quick after this much time I would find a rock or maybe a horse to teach instead."
Reskeme felt both proud he had improved so much by himself and embarrassed at the insult. Kellar said," are you ready to learn some attack magic?" Reskeme said," yes, I'm ready." Kellar laughed he said," that is for me to say, but luckily for you, I agree."
Kellar said," this is fourth layer magic," Reskeme felt as though a weight settle on his shoulders and the pull dragging him towards Kellar as the master mage channelled his mana. Reskeme watched a series of runes form in the air each rune shaped like a small flame creating a half-sphere of mana that flared, 3 runes drifted along the edges of the sphere moving from the left to the right, while a fourth rune formed parallel to the ground above the dome of mana.
Reskemes gasped, his body trembled with Kellar so near channelling so much power but he couldn't look away from the masterpiece. Reskeme glanced from the master mage to the 4th layered rune, his heart raced wildly and he felt cold sweat roll down his back, whatever that spell was he wanted to learn it.
Reskeme sighed relieved as Kellar stopped channelling, he took in deep breaths revelling in taking full breaths of air. The runes in the air disappeared falling apart as though it were a mere illusion. Kellar said," Now it is your turn, A fourth layer attack rune is the foundation to higher level runes." Reskeme took in a deep breath trying to remember where to put the runes in the air.
First he could do the top one as Kellar had, then the bottom three while rotating the runes, it didn't sound hard at first but he realized by adding in the first top rune the fourth would drain to only half his mana, as each successive rune costed the same price as the previous rune to channel.
He doubted he could do it yet but maybe if he just used three runes it would be easier, Smirking to himself reskeme channeled his mana. His body burned as he pulled in as much mana as he could hold, He formed one rune 20 steps in front of him willing the green flame to form into the shape he wanted, the rune began rotation as it shimmered green in the middle of the field they were standing in.
He formed each leaf-shaped rune as big as he could each about the size of his head, He willed the runes to form, his first second and third runes formed, the runes started to shake vibrating, Kellar shouted "you! you! need to form the fourth rune." The fourth rune began forming above the other three spinning runes, but the moment he lost concentration on his bottom three runes he lost control and they sparked leaking all of their stored mana.
A dome of red fire formed around reskemes runes, Reskeme turned to Kellar he said, "why did you do that?" The ground shook and his ears rang, reskeme turn to the shimmering red barrier. Kellar said," and that is why you use the stabilizing rune first not last, next time you might not have me to stop it from killing you." Reskeme stammered "that was awesome, let us do it again."
Reskeme felt a stinging pain on the back of his head, Kellar said, "This time let me explain what you need to do not to kill us before you channel your mana." Kellar pointed back to his barrier as it began falling apart.
Reskeme gaped, the master mage's dome of fire faded leaving a hole as wide as a horse in the ground, as though a giant punched the soft earth. Glancing around Reskeme notice about 100 soldiers standing on the edge of the clearing staring at the two, He waved at them, maybe they might like him if they seen what he could do. Reskeme smiled to himself the things he would be able to do once he could create that rune, like blow apart a wall, or a door, on second thought it might blow up the building not just the door.
Reskeme diabolical plans came to a crashing halt as Kellar smacked him upside the head once again. Kellar shouted," try it again, Create the top rune first then the bottom three, Now you know how to blow things up you need to learn to control it!"
Reskeme said," What, you want me to do it again?" Reskeme turns back as though he hadn't just almost killed them. reaching into his cloak he drew out his mana gauge, with a respectable 60% mana left he could cast the runes with some mana to spare. Kellar said," now that all of the Darva know we are coming I suppose it doesn't matter anymore, but this time creates the stabilizing rune first."
glancing from the bustling soldiers reskeme channelled his mana willing his flame to form the top stabilizing rune, The rune formed and hung there in the air, He breathed deeply the rush of mana tearing through him before channelling more mana creating the second rune than the third. A dome of green mana began forming but the runes began to vibrate as he tried to focus and create the fourth.
his veins burned and he panted, Kellar said, "take it slow, focus on the runes keep them in place and when they are firmly in place start forming the fourth rune. Reskeme gasped for breath, holding the runes in place wasn't as easy as Kellar made it look, if he didn't focus on keeping the runes solid they began to spark wildly.
Kellar said, " that's enough for now, break the runes apart starting from the power runes, do it slowly. Reskeme forced each rune apart and dismissed the stabilizing rune last. unlike the first time he felt the mana wash past him as though a strong breeze. Kellar said," well, you didn't kill us soo I can't be too mad, if you use it in the fight remember to run as fast as you can when you mess it up and destabilize the runes."
Kellar walked away holding his brightly coloured umbrella, reskeme would have laughed at the sight of a grown man in such colours if he wasn't terrified of the man. Reskeme turns to go hide as the master mage walked casually past a red-faced Commander, The man glare as though reskeme had stolen his last loaf of bread. He thought he could get out of hearing range of the man but the commander shouted, "What is going on here! you just used an attack spell on a stealth mission?"
Kellar said," It wasn't me, It was Reskeme, He channelled the spell I was just here to admire the lovely view of the mountains shrouded in the fog." Reskeme felt a cold sweat trickle down his back as he scurries away, he glanced at the mountains around them, he couldn't see anything, Kellar was just stalling, Reskeme began looking for an escape route, The commander said," get back here Kellar! Reskeme halt! you two are going to answer for this disruption.
