บท 50: Ch 50. Ares vs Sabrina

(Unedited)

Standing in front of the gym, a dome-like building with arcs pointing downwards, Ares could feel the tension of the coming battle. Sabrina, one of the strongest gym leaders of the Kanto region, was about to battle against him. Her prowess in battle was devastating, her moves as unpredictable as you would expect from a psychic master. Not many people were adept at using Psychic pokemon, but Sabrina was a master in the art of psychic warfare. So far, her winning rate was stunning, with all her opponents not speaking a word of their battle experience. It made strategizing even harder, as the only known information was her psychic pokemon and her known psychic abilities.

And he was about to face off against her.

At his side was another trainer, a young girl who had made a battle appointment as well.

She was a bit older than him, reaching a bit higher up in height as well.

She had teal colored hair reaching down to her waist. It done up in a single french braid, swishing back and forth as she continously pushed the stray locks of hair from her face. She wore a simple, periwinkle, knee high skirt. A black and white striped top barely covered her bellybutton, which sported a star shaped piercing.

At her side was a Wartortle, who moved about in excitement to show off its confidence.

"H-Hello. I'm Aina. Are you here to challenge the gym as well?"

The girl, Aina asked.

"I am."

Ares curtly responded, wondering silently if Aina was ready to battle Sabrina. She didn't appear to be that confident, fidgeting nervously with her hands.

Unlike her pokemon, Aina didn't have a lot of confidence.

"What is your name, if I might ask?"

"Ares."

Silence once more returned as they were both waiting for the doors to open. From time to time Aina would look his way, only to be embarrassed by her pokemon, who seemed to try bragging towards Ares's Lucario with all the flair it could muster.

Lucario just snorted seeing the Wartortle behave like that, averting his gaze. The Wartortle paid no attention to its nervous trainer, only giving attention to its own needs. Something that would surely cost them in battle. It would be better if it at least tried to cheer its trainer up a bit, at least so they could battle more fluidly.

Lucario patted Ares on the shoulder. Their eyes shortly met, after which they managed to get the slowly rising tension to die down, a reassuring smile taking its place. Ares would do his best, which was all he could do when the battle started. He would accept the outcome, no matter what it would be.

"Let's do our best, Lucario. Cheer us on, will you."

Lucario nodded, bumping his fist with Ares.

They were prepared.

Aina looked at Ares and Lucario, a bit of envy in her eyes as she really wanted to have that kind of trust between her and her Wartortle.

A gym trainer stepped outside, glancing at the two trainers waiting patiently on the doorstep.

"Sabrina is ready for you. Who wants to go first?"

The gymtrainer waited for the trainers to answer.

The Wartortle stepped forward, pulling its trainer with it to show they wanted to go first.

"Wartortle! I'm not mentally prepared yet!"

Aina exclaimed, sniffling a bit. Why of all times did it need to show of now!

Wartortle just rebuked her, pulling her with it.

Aina only looked at Ares, hoping he would speak up and help her out with this. Ares however, was not that interested in helping a girl he only met just a moment ago.

"Can I watch the battle or do I have to wait?"

The gym trainer was silent for a short while, his mouth muttering something inaudible.

"You are allowed to watch."

The gym trainer replied, guiding both Aina with her Wartortle and Ares inside.

The inside of the gym consisted of a long hallway, stretching on and on, with no end in sight. They passed many doors, in which people were busy training their psychic energy, such as bending spoons and making objects levitate.

From time to time, people would make simple eye contact, followed by executing movements in a symmetrical way, as if they were conversing about what they were doing. Everything was very intruiging to observe, as they halted more than once to watch what the psychic students were doing.

At some point, Aina had calmed down as well, enjoying her time watching the people train.

Seeing this, the gymtrainer nodded, guiding them to the deepest part of the building, stopping only when they were in front of a set of giant brass doors.

With a simple wave of his hand, the door slowly creaked open with a lot of noise. The doors groaned as they were pushed back, only proving how heavy the doors were. They slammed to a halt against the wall, a bit of dust trinkling down from the ceiling, revealing that which had been hidden behind them.

Revealed behind the doors was a giant battlefield. It was larger than other battlefields, stretching a bit wider than a normal one. The ceiling was higher as well, presumably so that trainers would be able to use any kind of pokemon they wanted in this battle.

A testament that Sabrina wasn't worried about the choice her opponent made in pokemon.

At the far end of the battlefield sat a tall woman in a throne like chair. Her cold blue eyes stared down at Ares and Aisha, measuring them from afar. In her hands was a small doll, one that appeared much like herself, only much, much younger.

It had the same straight black hair, the same body shape, only the clothes were different, as Sabrina wore a red uniform-like dress, while the doll wore a pretty white dress, covered in frills like most young girls wore at that age. A white summer hat hid the eyes of the doll, though they could feel its eyes staring at them.

In the hands of the doll was a single pokeball.

"Who is going to battle me first? I am looking forward to being friends with you."

A young voice came from the doll, which spoke instead of Sabrina.

Sabrina only looked at them intently.

"I-I... Ahem.. I am."

Aina responded, her mumbling fading away as she regained her bearings. Who would have expected the doll to speak instead of Sabrina. A strange and odd sight to be sure.

"Alright. But if I win, you will have to play with me. Same rules for the boy in the back."

The doll pointed at Ares, who was honestly getting creeped out by this gym leader. Maybe he should have come at some other time.

"I agree."

Aina yelled, showing for the first time a confident attitude.

"..."

"I agree as well."

Ares responded after a short moment. He was sure he was already regretting stopping at this gym. Maybe it would have been better to first visit Cinnabar island before getting here.

Sighing in remorse, Ares moved towards the stands, Lucario taking a seat at his side. Both of them waited for Aina to begin.

"How many badges do you have?"

The doll asked, tilting its head a slight tad to the right. Almost as if it was trying to guess.

"Two."

Aina responded, showing her badge case.

"Alright. Then it will be a one-on-one battle."

This time the real Sabrina spoke, levitating from her throne and taking her spot on the battlefield. The doll took out her pokeball, releasing a Drowzee on the field.

Taking out a pink pokedex, a smaller and older model than Ares had, but a pokedex nonetheless, Aina pointed at the Drowzee.

[Drowzee, the Hypnotic Pokémon. It is said to feed on the dreams of its opponents. It is also known for its powerful Psychic attack.]

Aina glanced at Wartortle who quickly took his spot on the battlefield. Both sides were ready to begin their battle.

"Wartortle, use Water gun!"

The battle unfolded, as Wartortle took the first move, firing a water gun at his opponent. The Drowzee just smiled, waving his hands in the air as the water gun halted in its tracks, falling down on the ground as it lost its fire power.

What followed was a one sided beat down, as the Drowzee put Wartortle to sleep with Hypnosis, followed by Dream eater. No matter how hard Aina yelled, Wartortle didn't wake up. Only at the end, when Wartortle was visibly weakened, only then did it awaken.

It gnashed its teeth, glaring at the Drowzee.

As a last ditch effort, Aina ordered Wartortle to use Hydro Pump. It was a move they had been working hard to master, succeeding just a week before.

The Hydro Pump blasted towards the Drowzee, being even stronger than normal, as Wartortle had the ability Torent, which boosted its water-type moves when it was in low health.

Drowzee tried to control the Hydro Pump, but failed as it was too strong.

The Hydro Pump barged forward, drowning everything in its path.

"We did it, Wartortle!"

Aina yelled, only to be surprised when her Wartortle collapsed to the ground, fainted.

Behind it was the Drowzee she had expected to be blasted away by the Hydro Pump.

"You lost the match. Now you have to play with me."

The doll spoke after Aina had returned Wartortle to his pokeball.

Before Aina could even respond, she was teleported.

Ares had witnessed the battle closely, amazed by the skill of the Drowzee. It had used Subsitute in the last second, moving towards Wartortle when they had assumed their victory. It had subsequently incapacitated Wartortle with a Psybeam, ending the battle right then and there.

And that without Sabrina uttering a single word.

She was surely using telepathy to get her orders across.

"Are you going to play with me next?"

The doll asked, giggling slightly.

"We'll see about that. I have faith in my partners."

"How many badges?"

Sabrina asked, waiting for him to respond.

"Five."

Showing the badges, Ares waited for her verdict.

"Then a double battle it shall be. A four-on-four pokemon battle. Only the challenger may subsitute pokemon."

Sabrina stated, surprising Ares.

He had predicted it might be a battle that consisted of more than a two-on-two, but a four-on-four pokemon battle, a double battle at that, was a major surprise. Double battles were a rare thing in the Kanto region after all.

"Let's begin."

Sabrina threw two pokeballs outwards, revealing her pokemon to be a Slowbro and a Kadabra.

"Choose your pokemon."

Sabrina waited patiently, her eyes never leaving Ares.

"Come on out."

Releasing his own pokemon, Umbreon and Pikachu took to the field.

It wasn't surprising for Umbreon to appear, as Ares would take any advantage he could get in this fight. A dark-type would definitely be a major advantage to be sure.

Umbreon and Pikachu took a glance towards each other, understanding that the battle was different than they had thought, taking their positions on the field. Pikachu moved a bit to the side, keeping her distance from the opponents. Umbreon however taunted the Slowbro and Kadabra, trying to get a rise out of them.

Not that it helped, as both Pokemon remained stoic and waited for the battle to commence.

Without a word, the battle began, as Ares took the first move.

"Umbreon, use Agillity and Pikachu use Thunderwave."

Setting up his first moveset, Ares waited to see what Sabrina's counter would be.

While Umbreon was boosting her speed at a fast pace, Pikachu's fur ruffled up a bit as a wave of electricity was shot outwards, weak enough to do no damage, but strong enough to leave the target paralysed if hit.

Without a single word let Kadabra avoid the attack, arriving near Umbreon in an instant. While Kadabra had avoided it, Slowbro put up a Reflect and Lightscreen, yet was hit all the same, as weak currents of electricity danced around its body.

"Kadabra, Disable."

Sabrina uttered but a single command, but the act itself made Ares frown. It was a good tactic, as it prevented Umbreon from boosting his speed even further, but he didn't change his tactic. Umbreon should be fast enough to counter Teleport at this point. Now he would be able to use attack moves without Kadabra being able to disable it for a short while.

"Dark Pulse."

While Kadabra Disabled Umbreon's Agillity, Umbreon fired a Dark Pulse at point blank range.

With Agility now disabled, Kadabra teleported away now that it had stopped the opponent from reinforcing its speed even further, yet it still suffered damage. It seems like it wasn't fast enough, as Kadabra was still hit by the Dark Pulse, even if it wasn't a critical hit.

Meanwhile Pikachu and Slowbro hadn't remained idle either, as Pikachu had been attacking with Thunderbolts, spamming them all around Slowbro with the aid of Double Team, making it hard for Slowbro to really dodge everything. Even with the Lightscreen and Reflect in effect, the moves still came in hard, making the battle difficult for Slowbro to handle. It wasn't fast enough either to even dodge the attacks.

Slowbro instead opted to redirected a lot of them with Psychic, sending them to the walls, towards other thunderbolts and even to Pikachu herself.

Yet Pikachu did nothing to dodge the attack, as the thunderbolt only made the double team dispel and made the next thunderbolt stronger if it hit the real body. The Lightning Rod ability Pikachu had worked perfectly in a situation such as this.

With every thunerbolt that did hit Slowbro, it damaged it even more, making it harder to move about as easy as before.

At this point, Sabrina looked at Slowbro.

Ares didn't miss the silent communication, waiting to see what she was planning.

Understanding what Sabrina wanted, Slowbro pinned Pikachu down with psychic. Pikachu grunted under the force of the psychic energy, as her body became difficult to impossible to move. It didn't stop her from attacking though, as she unleashed attack after attack to bring down Slowbro.

Seeing Slowbro locking down on Pikachu, Ares decided to come in between.

"Umbreon, Shadow ball on Slwobro."

Having succesfully made the Kadabra back off, Umbreon shot multiple Shadow balls towards Slowbro, who seemed intent of finishing Pikachu off, sparks of the paralysis still bouncing about its body.

Kadabra once more intervened, appearing in between Slowbro and the Shadow ball, shooting a Psybeam to lock the Shadow Ball in place, blocking the attack completely.

Or that was what was supposed to happen.

As Umbreon shot multiple Shadow Balls, the first Shadow ball gained in force and energy as it merged with the others as it became denser and bigger, pushing through the psybeam and sending both Kadabra and Slowbro backwards as the Shadow ball engulfed both of them.

Pikachu was released from the Psychic, as she and Umbreon focussed on the results of Umbreons attack.

There on the ground lay both Slowbro and Kadabra, both unconscious.

Sabrina retrieved her pokemon, staring shortly at their pokeballs as she let out her remaining two pokemon, a Hypno and a Jynx.

Both pokemon moved in hypnotising ways, Jynx swaying back and forth, her hands moving as if to 'invite' others towards her. Hypno however only laughed creepily, as his pendulum made others drowsy by just looking at it.

"Your pokemon are strong, but so are mine."

Sabrina said, as her eyes glowed a pale blue, seemingly synchoronising with her pokemon.

Both pokemon glanced at Pikachu, deeming her the weakest link in the current battle which, from a certain point of view, was correct. Pikachu couldn't take a lot of damage, but she could deal a lot of damage instead.

Now that the two psychic pokemon were ganging up on her, Pikachu began to feel cornered, looking nervously at Umbreon.

"Umbreon, break them up."

Umbreon rushed towards Pikachu, Double Team multiplying his single presence to more than few dozen.

"Use Snarl."

Surrounding the two pokemon, Umbreon snarled at them, as dark energy blasted outwards with every foul word that was uttered from his mouth.

Jynx moved her hand forward, a pale protective barrier forming in front of her.

As the Snarl hit, its power had become weaker but it managed to break through the protect, hitting Jynx and Hypno but leaving only a little damage. In that time, Pikachu was once more grasped by a psychic hold, as Hypno moved its pendulum in front of her, quickly putting her to sleep. If the fight dragged on any longer, Pikachu would surely be defeated.

A red beam of light interrupted the inevitable, as Ares returned Pikachu to her pokeball.

Umbreon sighed in relief, waiting for Ares to call out someone else.

Seeing the way this battle was going, Ares glanced at his pokeball, shaking his head as he decided against it. It was too soon.

Pidgeot quickly took the spot of Pikachu, flying from above to provide support from a distance.

Seeing the situation, Umbreon became more confident. Pidgeot was harder to take down than Pikachu.

Now Umbreon could go all out.

"Umbreon, Dark Pulse."

Rushing at the other party, Umbreon used Dark Pulse again, though this time he pointed it upwards. It had trained so often with Pidgeot, both knew what to do. It was a combination attack Ares had come up with for them. He didn't even need to give the order for them to know what to do.

With a strong Dark Pulse being sent skywards, Pidgeot used Air Slash to cut the Dark Pulse up and sent it downwards, this time in separate but equally powerful attacks, forming and area of effect attack.

With no real place to dodge, Hypno and Jynx tried to contain the damage they received, as they both used Protect. Yet with Jynx's protect already used before, it failed to properly form, letting the attacks pass right through.

Seeing this happen, Hypno moved in front of Jynx, blocking the attacks for the both of them, yet it still proved to be too much to handle.

The end result was two beaten up psychic pokemon that were up against their natural enemy, a dark-type pokemon.

Umbreon smirked, enjoying their helpless state.

He stalked around them, snapping at their ankles.

As they didn't really react as much as Umbreon hoped, he just ended it with a Shadow ball, ending the fight instantly.
