While their lovey-dovey scene played in his head, he became anxious to know whether the girl was in a relationship with another man.

He wanted to ask - is he your lover?-, But he changed his mind since he knew the girl wouldn't disclose something so personal to a stranger like him. 

So instead, he asked, "Is he important to you?" 

He phrased his question to sound like a casual conversation so that he could get an honest answer without raising the girl's suspicion.

But the girl felt odd, for the question seemed irrelevant at where they are right now. 

Still, she did not put too much thought into it and answered honestly, "Uhm, yes. I guess you can say he is important to me." 

"oh... I see," he replied with downcast eyes, then stood silently with disappointment.
