บท 20: Chapter 19 – Interrogation

Raiko's POV

A few hours later

I saw a man walking toward my warehouse where I had moved the assassin after I had captured him. The man had completely white hair and was in a black suit, he looked very professional.

I checked the time, it was 11 p.m. sharp, before opening him the door and guiding him inside. He followed me until we were inside a small soundproof room where the assassin was detained.

I closed the door, before I handed an envelope filled with money and I spoke:

"You can start, I don't care in what condition he is when you are finished, as long as he speaks truthfully. You have 25 minutes maximum, I will stay and watch if you don't mind. The room is soundproofed, nobody will find us."

"I hope that you don't have a weak stomach, it won't be pretty. And mister here will probably be a bit messed up in the head when I'll be finished, but I assume you already know that, don't you, Knockout."

The man who was talking to me was Nightmare, one of the most famed interrogators of the underworld. He was famous for being quick, very quick in his interrogations, it was said that he could get anyone to talk in under an hour. By curiosity, although I already had an idea what it was, I used Quirk Vision on him.

Nightmare (6237): User can enter the mind of someone and control his five senses, as well as know his fears, hopes, loves, likes, etc. Almost anything. Requires 10 fingers contact. Quirk may take up to a minute before it takes effect. A strong-willed person can resist for an extant.

Wow…

I have nothing else to say. It's one of the most powerful quirk I ever saw. Imagine the damage it could do in the wrong hands. I now understand why he is so good at interrogations, I had expected something like a quirk that shows someone his worst fear, but this is…

Still, it's pretty bad in combat as it has two glaring weaknesses.

First, the 10-finger contact, which means you are practically defenceless while the quirk is active.

The second is that the quirk may take a minute before it starts working, and in that minute, you are defenceless but your opponent is not, he can still hurt you.

Still, if the victim of his quirk is incapable of defending themselves, I wouldn't want to be in their position.

As I was thinking about all the possible uses of his quirk, the assassin saw us glared angrily at us, it was clear that if he ever got out of the current situation, he would pay me back a hundred fold, or die trying.

Nightmare approached him and put his ten fingers against his head and, for a few seconds nothing happened, before the assassin started to scream, a despairing and pained scream.

The torture continued for a few minutes, and honestly, I didn't even want to know what Nightmare was doing to the unfortunate assassin. Just staying in the same room was starting to make me sick, but I had to watch. After all, it was me who had engaged Nightmare to torture the assassin, it was my fault...

Maybe I was not a good person, no one good would do this, even to a villain, but I was going to be a hero and save people, and I was ready to sacrifice my humanity if it could save lives.

I wasn't going to be like All Might, a symbol of peace and justice. No.

I was going to be a symbol of fear for the villains and criminals.

The tortured continued again for a bit, Nightmare occasionally speaking and assessing the mental state of his victim, how close he was to breaking, but most if the time, he was simply torturing the assassin.

Finally, after 22 long minutes, Nightmare shot a grin at me and said:

"It's done, he's broken. He'll speak the truth to whatever you ask him, but he will never recover from this. He's done, as good as dead. He was a tough nut, managing to resist more than 20 minutes when I go all out isn't a small feat. But no one can resist in the end."

"Good job, I have already paid you, you can verify it's the right amount of money. Also, leave through the backdoor."

I looked at the assassin and honestly, he was pitiable now. He had foam? Drool? Coming out of his mouth and you could tell that he was using the least amount of efforts possible to stay seated and not fall to the ground. But the worst was his eyes, they were blank, dead, lifeless.

I felt a small tinge of guilt at this sight, before I focused myself, now wasn't the time to feel bad for an assassin who had most likely killed dozens of people.

To be sure that Nightmare had done a good job, I asked the lifeless looking assassin:

"Name? Age? Quirk? Affiliation?"

"Guro the Innocent, 36 years old, Blades, The Invisible Rose", he replied in a completely emotionless tone.

That was good, the man didn't seem to be able to lie, he was like a robot now. The only thing I could do was to wait for Detective Tsukauchi to arrive so that I can be assured that the assassin isn't lying.

Detective Tsukauchi was also very punctual, and was here at midnight, not a minute later. During the time between Nightmare's and Detective Tsukauchi's visit, I had removed all traces of torture and of Nightmare's visit. I had also prepared the interrogation room.

What was interesting about Detective Tsukauchi's quirk is that by touching someone, he can now if they are telling a lie, but he doesn't have to hear the question nor the answer, as long as he touches the person he'll be able to tell if they are lying.

A/N: It was never precisely explained how Tsukauchi's quirk worked in cannon, so I went with my own version of it.

It was with that in mind that I had prepared the interrogation room, as the only part of the assassin that the detective was going to see was his hand, and he won't hear the questions either.

The interrogation room was basically split in two by a wall with a hole only big enough a hand and both sides were soundproofed, so the detective wouldn't be able to hear the questions nor the answers, but he will still be able to use his quirk.

I knew that Tsukauchi wouldn't do that for free, so I had prepared a little gift for him in exchange for his services.

When I saw the detective coming toward the warehouse, I gestured him to come and started talking:

"Detective, I need you, or rather your quirk, for an interrogation. It will be simple, you won't hear the questions nor the answers, but I know that your quirk lets you detect if someone is lying even if you don't hear them, you only need skin contact. I also know that you gain absolutely nothing by doing this, so I will give you information on anything, except my identity or quirks, in exchange for this interrogation."

"I agree, though I must warn you, if someone is convinced that they are telling the truth, the quirk will register as one, he replied with a frown."

He wasn't fond of helping a Vigilante, but what he received in exchange was priceless, information on anything was simply too attracting.

I guided Tsukauchi toward the interrogation room and showed him where he would sit and the assassin's arm that was sticking out of the wall. He really couldn't see or hear anything about who I was interrogating, it was perfect. The only thing Tsukauchi had to do was to text me "truth" or "lie" when I was going to interrogate the villain.

I started questioning the assassin.

"Name?"

"Guro, he answered."

"Truth", Tsukauchi texted me.

"Affiliation?"

"The Invisible Rose"

"Truth"

The interrogation continued like this, with me asking questions and Detective Tsukauchi confirming if he was telling the truth or not. Surprisingly, the assassin was apparently not entirely broken, when I asked him the location and names of his headquarters and accomplices, he managed to lie, but a quick reminder of what would happen if he continued to lie quickly fixed that.

I had learned a lot of information that explained even more. First, I learned where the bases were and the number of members of The Invisible Rose alongside everything he knew about them, which wasn't a lot. The assassin I captured was Guro the Innocent, represented by a white rose and was in the middle rank of the group. In total, he knew of 10 members.

First, there was The Boss, whose quirk made someone invisible for 24 hours. He was the backbone of the group and made all of the decisions.

Then there was the warp gate user. He was basically the right-hand man and the only member of the group who wasn't expendable. The only thing Guro knew about him is that he had a quirk which could open a warp gate leading to somewhere he had the coordinates.

There were also five assassins, all professionals and experiences and extremely skilled. He didn't know of their quirks, but he knew that it didn't matter for them.

The final three members were the information gatherers and the ones the "cleaned" the crime scene it there was the need to. Among them was the guy with the tracking quirk that kidnapped me, but there was no mention of the one with the shadow quirk, but he didn't know more than that about them. I guess I will have to learn the rest of the story myself.

I wasn't happy with the way I had gotten the information, but it was the quickest way and the person I tortured wasn't exactly an angel, it would have to do, though I preferred other ways of getting information.

But it didn't matter now, it was time to hunt.
