Andrew couldn"t help but listen with fascination. After a brief time, Wakefield"s door opened and Barrett strode out. Surprised to see Andrew at his desk, Barrett paused, offering a polite smile.
"Good afternoon Mr. Stewart, I hope you and the missus are well?"
"Yes, thank you for asking Mr. Barrett," replied Andrew with equal politeness.
"As long as you both are happy and healthy, that"s the important thing, isn"t it?" said Dickie, smiling as he left the room.
Andrew was growing to dislike Dickie Barrett. While Barrett had offered no particular reason, there was a shallowness and insincerity to the man that irked him.
The colonel didn"t want to be disturbed and spent the rest of the afternoon in his office preparing for the inevitable showdown with Lieutenant Governor Hobson.
