Mech aimed his machine gun at Ashley, who hid behind a large boulder. When the boulder was destroyed, she quickly hid behind a tree, but that was shattered to pieces as well. Ashley was confused as to how a simple machine gun was capable of doing that. Well, she was in a world different from her own, after all.
Mech held Ashley upside down. Before the robot could injure her, however, a sword appeared in her hands. She used the weapon to slice Mech's machine gun right off. The sparrow, the ferret, and Ashley were sent falling to the ground.
"What happened?" the sparrow wondered, rubbing his head. "The last thing I remember was someone strapping a strange device to my head."
"You can speak!" Ashley exclaimed. "What are your names?"
"My name is Pence." He pointed at the ferret. "My friend over there is Winston."
"Look what you've done!" Mech screamed. "You will pay for this, child."
A pistol appeared out of his remaining leg and fired bullets toward Ashley and the two animals, who proceeded to run away from the robot. They came to a stop near a pond, where Curtis and Barry were seen resting.
"Curtis?" Ashley panted. "Is that really you?"
"Who else would it be, girl?" Curtis snapped.
"Barry, you're alive!" Pence said excitedly. "Where have you been?"
"Me and Curtis here were running away from two boys," Barry replied. "What about you?"
"We were running away from a giant robot. Hopefully we lost it."
A lightning bolt suddenly struck the ground where Ashley stood, but she miraculously dodged it. She looked up to see Charles and another boy, she immediately introduced himself to be Trent.
"You!" Ashley yelled. "What do you think you're doing here?"
"Me and Trent here are installing pycnometers around the island," Charles explained. "When we are finished, The Dark Fate will go according to plan."
"We are also searching for a particular spirit that will aid us in destroying all worlds," Trent added.
"And since you are the chosen one..."
"Chosen one?" Ashley gasped.
"...we will have to stop your efforts with these."
Charles whistler and black creatures emerged from the shadows. They had tentacles for limbs; tentacles were also protruding from their backs. They appeared to have no facial features.
"What are...th-those?" Ashley stammered.
"These creatures are known as Nightwalkers, part of a species called Nightmare," Charles replied. "Valestrom and Chantex both produced them in their respective laboratories. Me, Trent, and our fellow classmates summon them in times of need. Now...attack!"
The Nightwalkers attacked the trio of animals first. When Ashley took notice of this, she quickly dispatched the creatures with her sword.
"Where did you get that?" Curtis asked, looking at the sword.
"Some things just cannot he explained," Ashley said in response.
Both Charles and Trent summoned more Nightmares, which consisted of golden griffins and ducks that wore armour. Tod somehow appeared at the scene.
"How did you get here?" Curtis asked.
"It was another one of Nathaniel's ridiculous inventions," Tod grunted. "He accidentally used it on me, and it would seem that I have appeared here."
"Charge!" Trent commanded.
The ducks charged toward Ashley. Once she fended them off, the griffins attacked next. Tod took action and used his magic sceptre to dispatch the creatures with numerous lightning bolts.
All of a sudden, there was a bright flash of light. A brunette jumped out of the bushes, holding a camera in her hands. She wore a pink scarf, a black tailored dress with short, pink flounce sleeves, a pink sash belt, and tall, black leather boots. Around her neck was a green amulet with a design that resembled a dragon.
"Charles, you idiot!" she yelled. "You moves before I could take the picture!"
"Why are you here?" Charles asked in disgust.
"I just wanted to take a few pictures, is all. Also, Chantex asked me to give these to you."
The brunette gave Charles and Trent amulets with similar dragon designs. Charles' received a turquoise amulet, whereas Trent was given a yellow one.
"Who exactly are you?" Tod asked the girl.
"My name is Azalea, and I am one of Charles and Trent's classmates," the girl replied. "And who might the lot of you be?"
"That is Ashley and her pathetic friends," Charles interrupted. "Now would you—"
"Ashley? As in the chosen one? I must take pictures of her right away!"
"You're supposed to kill the girl, not take pictures of her!"
Vines protruded from Azalea's back and picked Charles up by the throat. "Would you please keep your mouth shut?"
Charles appeared to be losing breath. "Whatever...y-you say!"
Azalea drooled Charles back on the ground, with Trent tending to his injured neck. Azalea returned to her usual jovial self and turned around to face Ashley.
"So you're the one Valestrom has been talking about," she said in awe. Mech suddenly crawled out of the bushes. "Mech? What happened to you?"
"My oxygen tanks ran dry while chasing that good-for-nothing child," Mech seethed. He took notice of Ashley. "Looks like I've finally found her."
"Do you need a boost?"
"That would be much appreciated."
Azalea placed her hands on Mech's metal body until he began to glow a bright shade of green. The robot stood up proudly.
Mech fired a laser beam at Tod, who blocked it with his sceptre. The more the robot attacked, the weaker he seemed to become. Ashley saw this as an advantage.
"Keep distracting him," she whispered to Tod. "I think I know just how to vanquish him."
Ashley used her sword to cut off Mech's arms and legs, releasing Cindy, Andrew, and Ubaid. Nathaniel suddenly appeared in front of everyone.
"It worked!" he cheered. "The Summoner does work on whoever uses it! I knew making replicas would come in handy."
"You made replicas of one of my inventions?" Curtis asked, crossing his arms.
"Yes. Is that a problem?"
"That's enough!" Andrew interrupted. "Nathaniel, do something useful for once and destroy that robot!"
Nathaniel attached a bomb to Mech, causing the robot to instantly explode. "You can thank me later."
"No..." Azalea cried. "Mech is...gone. Charles? Trent? Where are you?"
"They must be after that spirit!" Ashley exclaimed.
"Just what in God's name are you talking about?" Tod asked.
"I'm not entirely sure myself. Just follow me."
Barry, Pence, and Winston were about to follow the group. A vine wrapped itself around their ankles and held them in the air.
"You aren't going anywhere," Azalea snarled.
Carrying the three animals, she ran through the hinterlands. She soon found Charles and Trent, who were glaring directly at Ashley and the others.
"Hello again," Azalea cheerfully said.
"Azalea, destroy those fools!" Charles ordered.
"Leave them alone!" a voice called.
A ghostly man with a dark complexion and native clothing joined Ashley's side. "Could it be?" Charles wondered aloud as he examined the man. "It indeed is! The Spirit of Determination!"
"Give is that spirit, girl, or else," Trent growled.
"As if," said Ashley, summoning her sword.
She charged toward Charles, screaming with sword in hand. Charles tripped her and pierced a long needle into her stomach and through her back, but she was somehow unharmed.
When Ashley stood back up, a pair of demonic wings grew out of Charles' back. "How is that possible?" Ashley asked.
"The element of myth possesses much skill," Charles said.
"The element of myth?" Curtis questioned.
He began to laugh hysterically. Furious, Charles fired an arrow at him. It pierced through Curtis' neck, causing him to collapse.
"You are going to pay for that!" Tod shouted.
He used his sceptre to electrocute Charles with a lightning bolt. His wings turned into nothing but ash as he fell to the ground with a loud thud.
"Give up?" Tod sneered.
"For now," Charles said as he stood back up.
"Charles?" an unfamiliar voice called. "Trent? Azalea?" What appeared to be a blue elf wearing a shinobi shozoku emerged from the shrubbery.
"Hello there, Xavier," said Azalea. "What brings you here?"
"Chantex sent me here to find you. Did you retrieve the spirit as promised?"
Charles noticed that the spirit was hiding behind Andrew. "I'm afraid not," he nervously replied.
"That's a shame. Chantex will know exactly what to do with you."
Azalea dropped Barry, Pence, and Winston and left with her classmates. Tod approached the ailing Curtis.
"How is he?" he asked in concern.
"He is not doing well, I'm afraid," Ubaid replied. "He appears to be bleeding excessively."
"Then we must take him to Auron at once," the spirit said. "I shall take you all there."
The spirit gestured for everyone, save for the animals, to join his side. They were then transported to a different location.
