"... It's still amazing, considering that you guys pull off the replicas from a person's memory." Zhang Mei Xing could only say this.
She concealed the shock in her heart and quietened down as she felt that this was the part where the other party would explain to her what just happened, why she was in this state, and what would become of her future.
In fact, the guide did just that.
"Actually, this is not the land of the dead or the ultimate destination of deceased spirits."
Then where was she? She wondered.
As if the guide could read her thoughts, he continued, "This place is simply where souls go to be tested."
"And you said I was a nominee..." She nodded, then continued. "Then it is like the world which I just went to was the examination venue and I… was put into a test."
Zhang Mei Xing was not the brightest person around, but her head was functioning well to at least connect the dots.
"May I know the result of the examination?" She nervously went to the point which the guide found so refreshing.
"Usually, you won't pass." He said. The words of course set a ripple in her heart.
"If you are familiar with the concept of reincarnation, you should know those that could go through it are people with strong resentment and unwillingness from their past lives. The majority tasted despair from betrayals or any other heart-wrenching events. Some are simply longing too much for some excitement. At least, that's what's usually portrayed in novels and other fiction works."
"Aren't those things made up like that… to hook readers or viewers? I mean, people rarely read if there's no catchy plot."
She seemed to have seen the guide nodding. Or like before, she perceived it through the movements of the clothes that were floating before her.
"I reviewed your life and know that in your college days, you've been a fan of these kinds of works. Don't you ever think it was weird that they died and suddenly they found themselves waking up in a younger body or in a stranger's body?"
"Sir, I have long accepted that in fiction works, things just happen," she awkwardly answered.
It evoked laughter from the other. A joyous one. To which the guide then replied, "Actually that happens too in real life."
"Ah!"
"Reincarnations do exist. We normally choose people who have strong emotions upon dying. This is where the trial you went through comes into play."
"Because it's you guys administering them?"
"Exactly." The hearty yet soft laughter rang again. An explanation followed, said slowly, and in a seemingly light mood. "Every test is different since every life is also different. If the examinee passes, that means they successfully showed us what we want to see. As a reward, we would let them get back to the past, with their memories of previous life intact, but without whatsoever recollection of what they experienced in the test world."
Zhang Mei Xing felt her heart jumped in what she just heard. Her brain too felt like it short-circuited for a while, turning blank, and then rebooting again, only to work a lot slower than before.
At the end of it, she couldn't help but go silent. Since if the system worked like that, it made sense then.
Zhang Mei Xing felt very nervous upon recalling the unanswered question thrown at the guide.
So did she pass the test?
She only fooled around with her family and friends and did nothing interesting outside of that. Would that qualify?
"What would happen if one did not pass?" The girl could not yet summon the courage to inquire about her results again.
"They simply get sent to the real consul of the underworld, awaiting their judgment."
"I see…" She let out an exclamation.
As if he had read what was on her mind, he asked. "You wanted to know your results, right?"
"…"
