"I was the one who played soccer but why do you look more worn out than I am?" Nick, who was chugging down his huge water bottle said as he saw Joy who was panting heavily. Mari brought her at the rooftop, their favorite spot every lunch break. The four of them- Joy, Mari, Nick, and Light sat down at the bench and they prepared their snacks.
"I-I have stamina problems." Joy replied, aghast at her own hopelessness. She still remembered how Fallon rejected her, and she knew that she wanted to watch Light play but because it was Joy who invited her, she said no without even thinking about it.
"I heard Fallon a while ago." Mari said while stuffing herself with her tuna sandwich. "She rejected you real quick."
"Rejected?" Nick asked, who seemed to be in good mood.
"Yeah, I asked her if she wanted to watch your practice match. Then she replied me with a cold 'no'. It shocked everyone in our journalism team." Joy replied.
"So you missed our match? What a shame. Our fellow right here, my bro, Light," Nick said and placed his arm around Light's shoulder, "played as goal keeper and no ball penetrated. He was like a wall."
'So that's why Nick was in a good mood' Joy thought to herself and looked at Light who was eating silently.
"Say, Light, do you want to be a part of our team?" Nick asked with a full mouth, making Mari smile.
"I'll think about it." Light said without looking at him. He laid down the ground and looked at the sky that seemed to have reminded him of something. He held his necklace and looked at the time inside it, and he followed it with a worried expression towards Mari, who was laughing at Nick's hilarious joke. Nick, who noticed something strange in Mari stopped laughing and gave her a warm pat on the shoulders.
Mari didn't know that tears had bedimmed her eyes as she laughed- but her laugh was not the same as the laugh they had remembered of her. Instead, it was too forced. Realizing that they were all looking at her, Mari smiled wide and wiped her eyes from the tears that blurred her vision.
"What's wrong?" Nick asked, worried about Mari who was wiping her eyes, but the more she did that, more tears fell and before she knew it, she was already sobbing.
"T-this is nothing" Mari said, hoping to assure everyone because all of them looked damn worried- even Light who was cold as ice had a sincere worry painted in his face. "What's wrong with all of you?"
"You can always tell us your problem. I am always here, okay?" Joy, who was worried said and hugged Mari, who was shaking.
"There's nothing wrong with me!" she told them and went back to eating her sandwich. Nick looked at her with sad eyes while Joy eyed her necklace which showed Fallon. Light showed his necklace to her which wrote Mari.
"I'm sorry for making all of you worry." Mari said, who was now trying to make a fake smile. "But I am fine. You needn't be worried. Okay?" she said and looked at everyone's faces. Light stood up and pulled Nick out of the rooftop who was cursing at him for doing such a thing. Light slammed the door and threw Nick aside, who was now wanting to punch him
" What are you doing? She needs me!" Nick shouted while Light tried his hard to calm him down.
"Let... Hope..." Light replied as he looked at Nick, who seemed to have calmed down. "They're bestfriends... Remember?"
"Mari..." Joy said, trying to ease the tensjon that surrounded the both of them. "You know you can always tell me everything."
"I have nothing to tell you, to be honest." Mari replied with a sharp tone and stood up, ready to leave. "Just leave me alone, okay? I don't need anyone's sentiments and love."
"Do you not trust me? Mari?" Joy, who was in the midst of trying not to cry stood up too, looking at the back of Mari.
"This is not about you Joy.." Mari said with a tone as dead as a carcass. "This isn't your business."
"If it's you, then it is my business- no matter what it is, even if it's the slightest thing you would cry for, it is my business because you are my family." Joy replied.
"Stop. Please." Mari said while Joy can hear her sobbing.
"Mari...I'll listen to you... You can tell me anything." Joy said as she ran towards her and hugged her. It was that hug that made Mari fall into her knees and cry even deeper. Light and especially Nick, who was peeping through the door clenched his fist because he wanted to help as they heard Mari's resentful cry.
"I-I know that Mari's going through something for a long time now." Nick told Light, who was thinking hard. "That's why I kept treating her like a princess because I dreaded this to happen. The thing I fear the most is losing her- Light... There's a deep sadness she cannot describe and that's feeding off of her. I don't know what I'd do if she'd- no... I cannot think about that. Mari wouldn't do that? Right? Light?"
Light, without looking at him said, "She wouldn't. Trust Hope." with the most sincere tone he could ever produce, and that eased Nick a bit.
"I- I know she wouldn't, but... I can't stop worrying about her because of the what if's running inside my head. Do you know how that feels like? Everytime I look at her, I always wonder what would happen to me if one day she decides to leave. She had cuts on her wrists Light! She had those because crying was no longer enough for her to release her pain.. She hurts herself everyday and I am so afraid that one day, I'll just find myself without her anymore. It shatters my heart into pieces." Nick cried as he continuously punched the wall. Light approached him and caught Nick's punch with his hand just in time when it was about to land on the blood-shot peach wall.
" You've done what you could to keep her alive, and I assure you that she appreciates that. I understand what you kept saying about your fear." Light said and Nick pulled his hand away from Light's when he noticed the cuts on his wrists.
"Why, Light?" Nick asked, shocked to see the cuts on his hand.
"Oh, that? Can't explain it to you"
