บท 12: 12. Aftermath
( SHIROGANA POV )
*FLASHBACK*
On my way back home with my family, after we had a nice dinner outside for a change, I was thinking, 'Maybe I should call Tensei after I reach home. I didn't go to teach Rei due to all the matches. I probably should tell him I'll come tomorrow for a session.' nodding I continued to drive home.
Upon reaching, I parked the car and the children rushed inside. I got out of the car and stood with my wife. I whipped out my phone to call Tensei but instead I was receiving a call from him.
I answered, " AH! Tensei I was thinking about calling you about Rei's training."
But to my surprise, the voice on the other side wasn't Tensei. It was a female's and there was a deep amount of worry and guilt in it, "Hello Mr.Shirogana we are calling from ******** hospital to inform you of an accident involving Mr.Tensei along with his son and is brought to the hospital. Your contact was mentioned in his emergency list so we called you to inform you."
The information given was not able to be processed in my mind. So, I asked again to confirm, ``Excuse me, Are you talking about Tensei Toujou." I immediately got a reply from the other side, "Yes, it is the same person."
Conforming it was Tensei, my legs lost their strength. I immediately stumbled and took the support of the car beside me to stand. My wife, Narumi, came near, noticing me stumbling and helped to stand straight.
I replied, "Yes, I'll be there." and cut the call.
My mind went blank after cutting the call. I couldn't help but wonder if this is all a dream. It all felt so surreal to me. I hoped Tensei was fine.
My thoughts were snapped as I heard Narumi's worried voice, "Shiro what happened? What was that call about?"
I took a deep breath and replied, "I would have to go to the hospital Narumi. I might not come for the night." and got inside the car again.
She then asked with worry, "Why the hospital Shiro? Should I also come?"
I then replied as I took my car out, "No, there is no need to worry. Stay home with the kids."
I drove off not waiting for a reply. As I drove towards the hospital my thought ran wild. I couldn't believe what happened to him. We both talked yesterday over the phone as he wanted to leave the team to take care of Rei.
I parked my car as I reached the hospital and entered. I asked the receptionist for directions towards his room. As I reached, I saw a couple of doctors and police talking.
I went near them and asked one of the doctors, "Excuse me, I received a call from the hospital informing about an accident involving Toujou Tensei and Toujou Rei."
The doctors shared a look at each other and finally sent a look towards the police. The doctors then made their way out and the police stood in front of me. The head of the police then asked, " May I inquire who you are, sir?"
I then replied quickly, "My name is Kamizato Shirogana and I'm a friend of Toujou Tensei. I received a call stating he was involved in an accident."
He then took a deep breath nodding and replied, "Ok! air, please do not panic but, Mr.Tensei and his son were involved in an accident. The child was safe but Mr.Tensei..." He then took a deep breath and continued, "Mr.Tensei died on spot trying to save his son. Our deep condolences."
My face lost all it's color hearing him. My legs finally lost their strength as my body fell. Thinking about it my eyes watered. The police immediately lifted me and said, "Mr.Shirogana please stay calm."
I nodded and asked them to please leave me alone for some time and they all left. I sat on a chair available trying to digest all of it. All the memories of Tensei flashed through my mind, how we both spent our childhood and how we played baseball together.
I called Narumi to inform her about the situation. Hearing Narumi wanted to immediately rush to the hospital, but I rejected and convinced her to stay home with the kids.
* END OF FLASHBACK*
I went near Rei's room and observed his face as he slept, through the window. This child now needed support and there is no one left for him. Tensei was all Rei had since his childhood, now that he is gone the child needs support.
I immediately called Narumi and explained what happened and how Rei reacted to Tensei's death. I then proceeded to tell her about my plan to adopt Rei into the family and give him support until he grows up and can sustain himself.
She immediately agreed to the suggestion as she was also very close to Tensei. If Rei goes to an orphanage, I and Narumi would constantly worry about his well being and won't be able to rest well. Rei never had a mother after birth, it was more like he never knew her as she vanished after an incident.
I then cut the call after talking with her. I felt happy as she also supported my decision to adopt Rei. I hope Rei can get all the mental support he needs to recover and turn back into the cheerful kid he was.
