Yu Chen watched Si Xia silently, her head tilted a little to the left, as he pulled out the shining coin and stared at it.
Xia's eyes sparkled as he looked at the coin and his face lit up with a huge grin.
"Congratulations dear. Finding the coin symbolises good luck and health. I hope you'll be successful in every endeavour you take this year." Mrs. Yu spoke with a motherly smile.
"See Chen. I told you it wasn't a probability game. Anyway, congrats boy." Mr. Yu spoke a little awkwardly, finishing his dumpling.
Si Xia thanked Mr. and Mrs. Yu before he turned to face Yu Chen. Chen had really wanted to get the coin and Xia suddenly felt guilty for getting it.
But as his eyes fell on Chen's face, Si Xia was quite surprised. Yu Chen had an adorable grin on her face and she launched herself on Si Xia as soon as he turned towards her.
"Oh congratulations Xia!! I knew you are the luckiest guy in the world!" Chen exclaimed as Mr. Yu chuckled, "Why does this sound like you're complimenting yourself instead of congratulating him."
Yu Chen stuck out her tongue as she let go of Xia and reached for another dumpling. "I'm really not. Plus, Xia's going to need all the luck he can get if he's going to competing against me in the software industry." Chen spoke with a wink and a grin in Xia's direction.
Si Xia sighed with a smile looking at Chen. Seeing her behaviour, sometimes he forgot that Yu Chen was actually an adult.
After dinner, Mr. Yu and Chen headed out of the house to set up the fireworks as Si Xia helped Mrs. Yu clean up after dinner.
Mrs. Yu smiled as Si Xia washed the dishes, wearing an apron over his expensive suit.
"Hey dear, I never got to ask you, how did the two of you meet?" Mrs. Yu asked, pushing back Xia's hair which were falling on his forehead.
Si Xia's heart warmed up by this gesture as he said, "We met in school. High school. I was awed by her genius and beauty. And she refused to accept me."
Mrs. Yu laughed, "Sounds like our Chen. Trying to avoid you if you came from some well off family."
Si Xia's face fell as he spoke, "I don't come from a well off family."
Mrs. Yu hurriedly cut in, "I'm sorry. I just guessed based on your clothes and manners. I'm really sorry if I've crossed some line."
Si Xia was surprised. He spoke, "Hasn't Chen told you?"
Mrs. Yu tilted her head, "Told us what?"
Si Xia spoke as he hung his head, "I'm an orphan. I was raised in an orphanage until I left it when I was fifteen. I've been on my own ever since."
Mrs. Yu was silent. Si Xia sighed as he went back to washing the dishes. He could guess what was going on in Mrs. Yu's mind right now. What parent would approve of her child dating an orphan?
And he could clearly see that where he came from would matter more to Chen's parents than what he did now. Or so he thought.
