บท 5: Chapter 2 part 1 - Iconic

The Guildmaster of the Adventurer's guild in the Dungeon City Messia, Migo, is a man, of average build, of the Were Fox race who is around 42 years old with stark white fur.

Migo was orphaned at a young age and wandered the streets of Messia as a part of a small time criminal gang mostly pickpocketing for a living. Until a famous adventurer named Vlak took him in after he raided the gang's hideout, and from there Migo worked at the guild eventually becoming the Guildmaster.

Migo was in his office, reading over a recent report, the contents of which made him frown deeply; after one of his [4*] adventurers had failed to return from a regular subjugation for one of the evolved monsters that would occasionally show up inside the Beginner Woods.

He had put out an urgent request for an investigation into the circumstances behind that man's disappearance. Usually Ludger Folles liked to work alone which was unusual for an adventurer of his rank but Migo had approved of it due to Ludger's outstanding results, he had a history of completing subjugations of monsters that usually required parties of 4-5 adventurers to deal with and on top of that he had extensive knowledge of the Beginner Woods.

However on this occasion Ludger had been gone for almost a week on a subjugation that should have taken someone with as much knowledge and experience with the woods as him around 2-3 days. When Migo had made the decision to put out the investigation request, more than 20 parties of adventurers had taken up the request in order to find Luger; he had expected a lot of young adventurers to sign up since Ludger was highly revered by them and most of the up and comers of the next generation of adventurers often say that their success is due to the Ludger's teachings, but even with the large amount of adventurers they didn't have very much success with finding him.

What one of the groups did found though was a hero of the goddess Miluna who went by the name of Loffet, apparently upon meeting with the hero, Loffet had requested a meeting with the Guildmaster of Messia's Adventurer guild and this report had arrived just now. Migo, whose health had been deteriorating the last few days due to stress was trying to hold back the urge to just abandon all his duties. He could only try to imagine the reason why a hero would be wandering around in the Beginner Woods, whatever the reason though he knew it had to be related with the disappearance of Ludger and Migo knew that it meant more trouble for him so he let out a long sigh as he held his head in his hands.

When he had built up enough resolve, he called out to his assistant who was reading over various reports on the couch across from his desk.

"Shuna, have Jachi's party come up here with the hero Loffet as soon as they can."

Shuna is a tall woman of the Were Rabbit race, who has black fur and is about 37 years old. She is a former slave that Migo had bought when he started working at the guild and also Migo's wife, she had an incredible innate talent which is her [Inspection] skill that allows her to gain detailed information about non-living things such as magic items, artifacts and weapons. [Inspection] is a rare sought after skill but it has various drawbacks which makes capable users a very minute group, namely the high [Mp] cost when active and the mental burden that it places on the user's mind when [Inspection] is activated. Shuna was one of the rare people who could handle the skill, however, and would use it when adventurers would bring in strange things that they wanted identified, for a fee of course.

When her husband called out to her, Shuna didn't even bother looking up from the report she was reading since she had already anticipated Migo would say that after he finished reading that report.

"They are down stairs now, I will tell Mina to bring them up and to make some tea."

Migo let out another sigh when Shuna had answered as such because he knew that she had already read through the report and knew what he would do before he made the decision, even after 20 years he had never gotten used to how she could read him like an open book but in his head he thanked the gods for blessing him with such an amazing partner.

"I see in that case, we should clean up in here before that."

Inside Migo's office wasn't dirty per se but there were quite a few stacks of reports building up from the various groups who had gone into the woods to investigate.

"I will leave that to you dear."

Shuna replies in a monotone voice as she continues reading through another small pile of parchment. Migo chuckles dryly as he begins to shuffle one stack of reports together.

A little while later…

"So you are the Hero Loffet?"

Migo was facing a young human man with light brown hair and bright golden eyes, as Migo was looking him over trying to gauge the person's abilities the first thing he noticed is that Loffet was hardly old enough to be called a man and would probably be in his 20th year or younger, and by his expression it was obvious he found this whole thing to be a waste of time. Aside from that Loffet had a fairly well developed physique which assured that he had enough strength to swing the thick bladed, white, sword at his waist and his armor looked rather normal not flashy or expensive. Overall the impression he gave off wasn't that of a Goddess' hero.

"Yeah, like I told the other guys I am a hero of the goddess Miluna, I can provide the [Proof of the Divine Concord] again if I have too but the sooner I can be on my way the better."

Loffet raised one arm behind his back to stretch and let out a soft yawn as he replied. Migo had seen and even met with a few heroes before and usually they were arrogant or extremely pious but this one was a little off from what he was expecting, which made him question what kind of goddess Miluna was.

"No that won't be necessary, Jachi and his group already confirmed it but I would like to hear the reason you asked for this meeting."

Migo had quickly banished his stray thoughts and managed to respond without any changes to his expression, years of experience have given him a solid poker face.

"I'm glad that you can see things my way, as for the meeting… well you can say that I was ordered to by Miluna to explain some things to you"

"What?!"

Migo had spat out his tea straight towards Loffet and shouted in surprise, since the meaning behind Loffet's words was that a goddess had spoken, though indirectly, to someone who wasn't one of their chosen. Shuna, however, who was by his side stifled her laughter with a fake cough.

"Yeah Miluna told me to come talk things over with you before I leave so that's why I asked those guys to bring me here."

Loffet silently cursed, since even though he had managed to dodge a majority of the hot tea that shot towards him, the place he was supposed to sit was now soaked.

"O-oh okay I will hear what you have to say then."

Thus Loffet began to relate to Migo and Shuna about the arch demon Vendril and what had happened to Ludger, however the matter of him being reincarnated was coincidently left out.

"…So Ludger is really dead then…"

Migo held his head in his hands as he let out a sigh, Ludger and him were never very close but he felt an odd sense of camaraderie as one whose mind worked in a similar way to his and a deep respect to the one who had nurtured many of the young adventurers to the point of earning the nickname, the Rookie Shepard, and on some occasions they had gone out for drinks together, also Migo had even considered him as the top candidate for his replacement after he retired.

Shuna began rubbing Migo's back in an attempt to comfort him since she knew the contents of his heart and what the effect of this news would have on not only Migo but the whole city of Messia. After Migo had regained his composure he looked back to Loffet who was sitting quietly sipping tea while avoiding the Guildmaster's gaze.

"Well I don't blame you for his death since it was the arch demon that killed him, I mean with an opponent like that anyone would be hard pressed to keep them from retreating by themselves and as for it coming over here, it was just an unfortunate coincidence."

Loffet nodded slightly but didn't say anything since he knew that if the Guildmaster found out that the arch demon had gotten away because he had missed with his [Demon Slayer] arte due to negligence and only took out the upper left half of the demon's body instead of his head, well it would have been a lot tougher for Loffet in this city, apparently the guy that died ended up being a pretty popular guy too. Although it wasn't like Loffet didn't feel a bit guilty about everything it's just that he already killed Vendril earlier and he had taken out most of his negative emotions out on his corpse besides he knew that if the truth got out then he would only be blamed for it since now that he had killed the demon, the people had no outlet for their grief except for him.

"Well now that all my duties are complete I will be leaving this city"

Migo wasn't shocked at the severity of the hero's bluntness anymore since he had spent the last few hours with him but could only nod as the hero named Loffet stood up and left the room. Shuna looked over and locked eyes with her husband.

"You're going to tell them today right?"

Migo only nodded as he looked out the window at the bustling street down below, Shuna was referring to the young adventurers who had went out to search for Ludger in the Beginner Woods. Migo had to send out an emergency return order for the investigation base camp to notify all the parties still searching and due to how close the woods were to Messia, he wouldn't have much time to prepare a decent obituary speech but he couldn't hold onto the news of Ludger's death until tomorrow. Shuna sighed and held her husband's hand and said…

"I will handle bringing everyone back you just work on your speech, Jachi will definitely go on a rampage in the dungeon today so try and think of a way to keep him safe."

Migo nodded, Jachi and his group were some of the first adventurers that Ludger guided in the woods and were currently a [3*] party one of the more promising up and comers of the new generation, however Jachi looked up to Ludger the most to the point that some would call it fanaticism but his skills weren't a joke they were on the level that he could be called a genius. Jachi had one huge flaw though, he had an awful temper, up till now Ludger had kept him in check fairly easily but Migo knew that with him dead Jachi would be ready to explode at any provocation.

Migo sighed again as he thought of ways to handle the aftermath of today's events and prayed that no one would provoke Jachi for the next few days.
