บท 2: Start of a Journey: The Second Step

After arriving at the Pokemon Center I handed Seedot off to Nurse Joy so that she can check to make sure i isn't sick in any way, and I paid a bit extra to learn whether Seedot knows any egg moves or not.

About half an hour later Nurse Joy signaled for me to come speak to her, she gave me back Seedot and said, "Your Seedot is in exceptionally good health, and quite a bit stronger than average for being only a month old. He also has 3 egg moves, Bullet Seed, Grassy Terrain, and Foul Play. However because of how young it is, I would recommend not trying to teach it Foul Play until it evolves and unlocks the ability to use Dark-type energy naturally. As for Bullet Seed and Grassy Terrain it should be fine for you to train them as long as you don't overwork him. It is still a baby, and while grass types tend to grow rather fast because of how much larger and stronger he is than normal I would give it another month before trying to battle with it unless it is an emergency."

"Ah, Seedot is only a month old? I thought the minimum age for starter pokemon from the gacha was 3 months?"

Nurse Joy nodded at my question before saying, "It is. My guess would be that someone mistook your Seedot's exceptional size for it being older than it actually is and entered it into the system by accident."

"Ah, okay Nurse Joy. Thanks for the help! I'll be sure to take it easy for the next month or so and spend most of the time bonding with Seedot. I was actually planning to speak to the daycare on Route 117 about working with them for about a month anyway so that I could learn how to properly take care of all different types of pokemon."

Nurse Joy smiled at my response and said, "Good, if you have any questions feel free to ask me while you're here. Anyways, I need to be getting back to work. Good luck!"

Smiling at that I walked over to the lounge area and sat down to wait for my mom to return. As I sat there I thought about all the information I had on Seedot and his evolutionary line. As I thought it over I realized I would have to buy a leaf stone at some point to evolve him, but there is plenty of time before that becomes a necessity. I'll wait until I reach Lilycove City and see if I can buy one from the department store there. It wasn't much longer before my mom came back and tapped me on my should which startled me out of my thoughts.

I smiled weakly at her and said, "Hey mom, get everything you need?"

With a smirk on her face she said, "Nope! However, I was able to reconnect with an old friend. One of her pokemon will be laying an egg in a few weeks, and she said she'd speak to her about giving the egg to you."

Shocked I looked at my mom and said, "Oh, cool! What did you go to get anyway?"

At this my mom shook her head in disappointment. She then said, "I went to go speak to your father. He had said he wanted to give you a pokemon for your journey, but apparently the pokemon he wanted to give you ran away. He said he'd send you a rare item he came across, but couldn't figure out what it was for. It's like an orange vest, but it's not man-made." She then excitedly asked, "So, what is your starter pokemon?"

I smiled at my mom's exuberance and said, "It's a Seedot. He's apparently so large for his age that he was put in the gacha 2 months early by mistake. Nurse Joy said I should take it easy on the training, and try not to battle with him for at least a month. He does however know 3 egg moves, although Nurse Joy said I should wait until he evolves to try and get him to learn the third move."

At this my mom hugged me as she exclaimed, "Let me meet him! I'm sure he is adorable."

I laughed at this, but shook my head and said, "Sorry mom, but I haven't even met him yet. I wanted to wait until I was in a private place with no distractions. I'll be sure to introduce you to him as I pass by the house on the way to Fortree to get the Feather Badge."

"Aww, so do you have a plan for your travels?"

"Yes mom. I am going to stay here at this pokemon center for about a month since Seedot is too young to battle. In the mean time I will use that time to bond and train Seedot. I am also hoping to get a job at the daycare on Route 117 so I can learn how to take care of all different types of pokemon. Then I plan to head to Verdanturf before continuing on to Rustboro for my first gym badge. Roxanne's Rock type pokemon should be a good starting place for Seedot and I. After that I was thinking about heading to Dewford, the Mauville, Lavaridge, Fallarbor so I can visit Meteor Falls, then Petalburg. After Petalburg I was thinking about stopping at home for a bit of time to introduce you to my pokemon, and take a rest from the constant traveling and battling. Then I would continue on to Fortree, Mossdeep, and Sootopolis. If all goes well I'll have all 8 badges and the qualifications to compete in the next League."

"Sounds like you've really thought it out. Don't forget to be safe, and please call me if you have any issues. By the time you reach home for your break I should have the egg from my friend, so try and keep an extra spot on your team if you can. Oh, and check with the Pokemon Center to see if your dad has sent you the item he is sending you."

"Ah! I forgot to claim my Trainer's Starting Kit from the league! I'll do that when I register for a room I guess."

"Hahaha, make sure you do Isaac. It's time for me to be heading home." My mom then hugged me fiercely for a few minutes before saying, "Bye Isaac!"

"Bye mom! Bye Hypno!"

My mom grabbed Hypno's arm and then disappeared. I then checked the time and realized it was getting late, so I went to the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat. I then went to the supplies shop inside the Pokemon Center to buy the recommended food for Seedot, spoke to Nurse Joy about registering for a room, and about picking up the Trainer's Starting Kit. Nurse Joy registered me for a room for a month, which I paid for upfront having been given a decent amount of pokedollars from the league and my mom. Nurse Joy then walked into the back to get the Trainer's Starting Kit, but when she walked back holding only a backpack I asked in confusion, "The Trainer's Starting Kit didn't include a backpack. Where is the rest?"

Nurse Joy just chuckled at my confusion before she answered me, "The league heard about you being rejected by Professor Birch. They felt he made a poor decision to do that so they added this backpack to your Trainer's Starting Kit. It's a prototype backpack that uses technology similar to a pokeball to store items in what they are calling a hammer space. Basically, each pouch of the backpack can hold up to 100 different items, and it can hold up to 99 of each item. There are 6 different pouches, although one pouch is made specifically for berries so they don't expire while inside. The league said to give this backpack to you as an apology, and to ask if you would be willing to give them feedback on the backpack once a month so they can work on fixing any issues you encounter. Any items lost due to malfunctions of the backpack will of course be compensated."

I stared at her in shock before I said, "That, that sounds great and all, but what about the weight of each item?"

At my question Nurse Joy covered her mouth with her hand as she chuckled again before she said, "Each slot of the hammer space is built with the same weightless technology of a pokeball. Otherwise how do trainer's carry around a snorlax?"

My eyes widened in enlightenment as I exclaimed, "Ah! That makes so much sense. I've never really thought about that before!" I then reached over to take the backpack and said, "Thanks for the help Nurse Joy! Could you please let the league know that I will let them know about my experience with the backpack when I get a chance?"

Nurse Joy nodded at my question and so as I turned to head up to the room I rented I said, "Thanks again for all the help Nurse Joy! Goodnight!"

It was only a few minutes later I found myself standing alone in my room with Seedot's pokeball in my hand waiting for me to let him out. I pressed the button on the pokeball and threw it up in the air a couple feet away from me where it released Seedot from inside, before it came back to me where I caught it smoothly (Mom let me practice with her rather docile Swirlix). Seedot took a couple of seconds to form and when I saw him, I can honestly say I was shocked beyond belief. He was huge! Seedot's are supposed to look like an acorn in the wild, it's a defense mechanism to protect them from anything that might want to eat or harm them. This Seedot was so large there was no way it could ever be taken for an acorn. He was practically the size of a watermelon!

After I got over my shock on how large Seedot was I kneeled to get down to it's level and looked it in the eye. Then I said, "Hello Seedot. My name is Isaac, and I was chosen to be your trainer! However, I don't want to force you to work with me, so if you would prefer I could help you get to Route 102 before releasing you into the wild."

Seedot stared at me for what felt like hours before he nodded his head and walked up to my leg before rubbing his head up against it.

"Alright! Glad to have you on board Seedot. Would you like a nickname?"

Seedot thought for a bit before he nodded and said, "Seedot!"

I laughed at his enthusiasm before asking him, "Alright, how about Viridios?"

Seedot almost immediately shook his head no at my suggestion, so I followed up by asking him, "Not Viridios, so how about Sucellus?"

At that Seedot nodded his head emphatically. So, I exclaimed, "Great! Sucellus it is then. Now, you're my first pokemon, however you're too young to battle at the moment, so for the next month we're going to take it somewhat easy. We'll work on your physical attributes, more notably your defenses, and your ranged attacks. Other than that I'm hoping we can get to know each other real well during this month. I am also planning on getting a job where you'll be able to interact and perhaps learn from other pokemon too. Does that sound good to you Sucellus?"

Sucellus nodded, and with that began the close friendship between myself and my starter.
