บท 9: Chapter 9
Mitsuki pulled his hands away from the tank when he saw the girl did. She had taken off her mask and he was able to get a better look of her face. She had blue eyes and hair so dark, it was almost black. Her face was very pale and she had thin lips and a cute button nose.
"Did I just think her nose was cute?" Mitsuki thought. Shaking his head of such thoughts, he focused on the conversation between his parents and this mysterious assassin.
"What's your name?" Raze asked first. Hana didn't respond for a long time. "My name is X08BT4."
Raze, Josuke, and Mitsuki all looked at one another. That wasn't a name but a string of letters and numbers that made no sense.
"My name is Mitsuki." Mitsuki decided that maybe they had to go another way of getting answers from her. If she was an agent in their military, she was probably heavily trained to not answer questions. Of course, this was based on novels he had read before. "This is my mom and my dad. I'm sorry we had to put you to sleep and in this tank, but we really need your help. Why were you trying to kill my mom?"
"It was my mission."
"Who sent you?"
"..." Hana said nothing. Her eyes had no light, her face expressionless. Raze decided that she had to try a different way.
"You know who I am, you know what I do. I am the Major General of Abella and have a lot of pull in the military. I've already told a story to the higher-ups that an assassin tried to kill me, failed, and escaped. They do not know you're with us. I don't want to hurt you, but I will if it will get me answers."
"Mom!" Mitsuki shook his head. Based on novels, torturing assassins never worked and they always killed themselves first. If they wanted answers, they couldn't let her die.
"What will you choose, young lady?"
"..." Hana looked blankly at this family of three. She then put her breathing mask back on and closed her eyes.
Raze ran forward to bang on the glass. "I am the Major General! I need answers and you are going to give them to me!"
Josuke grabbed Raze's hand and dragged her back. Whispering in her ear he said, "Raze, calm down. She's not a regular soldier that works for you. She's a highly capable assassin who was probably trained her whole life for this. You screaming at her isn't going to work."
While Josuke was trying to convince Raze to try another method, Mitsuki tapped on the glass gently.
"I'm sorry for my mom. She's just really scared for our family. Do you have a family?" Hana didn't respond or take off the breathing mask, but she did open her eyes. Taking that as a sign of interest, Mitsuki continued talking to her.
"I don't have any siblings but I did have a lot of friends. They're people my age and we used to go to arcades and cafes after school everyday. Then we would train and study because we want to get stronger and be even better people than our parents. How old are you?" Mitsuki was trying to get her to open up to him and figured the best way was to start with harmless questions first. Hana stared at Mitsuki for awhile and then she shrugged.
Behind them, the two adults watched this short interaction and her response. Raze stood with her mouth open wide, wondering how her 20 year old son was getting this highly-trained super soldier to respond to him. Josuke leaned over to his wife and whispered, "Let Mitsuki try. It seems like she's responding to him. We can't force a horse to drink water, we can only lead it to the trough."
Mitsuki kept asking Hana benign questions, and sometimes she would respond, though it was always silent. She kept the breathing mask on but her eyes never left his. Mitsuki learned that although she didn't know what age she was, she was raised in Abella's military in Sabel. She had always known about her unique abilities and wasn't able to create guns and swords like everyone else in Abella. She also didn't know what color her aura was, leading Mitsuki to believe she didn't have one. It seemed to be going well, but anytime Mitsuki tried to ask a question about the attempted assassination or who had sent her, Hana immediately shook her head or stopped responding entirely. But Mitsuki didn't get frustrated because he knew it wasn't going to be easy to get these answers but he couldn't give up because he had to protect his family.
